School Bullying/Violence

A Thread about School Violence and Bullying??

Should School Bullys be prosecuted for assault theft just like an assault or theft is dealt with in public?? Should the police get involved?? Should Schools have the right to court martial bullys like assault is dealt with in the army??? Suggestions plz.

Forums: The Bar,

i reckon that school bullys need to be court martialled, explelled and refereed to the police for charges and a juvenile court appearance, If schools can deal with students caught in possession of drugs/alcohol so harshly then why are they taking such a lenient stabnce on violent offences (ie. maximum offence for assault/theft 30 minutes at lunchtime in the detention room).

I Reckon anybody caught or denounced upon for assault, theft or as such shalt be given a school "court martial" expelled and referred to the police and justice system for punishment, it seems schools are too lenient on assault and theft of other students property but hard-out on drug-offences and assaulting a teacher etc etc....Come on i mean if assaulting somebody in the general public is illegal why isnt assaulting somebody in a school???

pardon the typos - im pissed as a kite.

//im pissed as a kite.

That's the coolest mixed metaphor I've ever heard.

Did/do you get beat up a lot, or whats your deal?

im gunna have to be honest here - Yes i did, the schools did shit, no police involvement whatsoever.

but if you can get what im saying the police are called in if a student is caught with a small amount of weed but they aint when some one is beaten over even to the exent where they have to visit the first aid room, and if assault is illegal in the street why aint it in schools??

Hmmm. I see your point, I just don't agree with it. I got in one fight once I got into highschool this big cat punched me so I hit him with a chair, he bled, I won, and Im thankful they didn't call the cops, even though the teacher saw the whole thing. Who needs that kind of strife when they're 13?

Prior to that ( standard 3-form 2) I got a few good hidings but I was a smart ass and every now and then someone needed to put me in my place, eh (I don't consider this assault).

The one thing I never liked (and this I would consider assault) was those fucking kids who would bully others using strength in numbers man, that shit pissed me off to no end (they were always older kids too, what the fuck is that about?),
I never really got bullied that often but it happened a couple of times usually by a bunch of kids from another school, and I remember thinking "what a bunch of weak ass punks, wait till I get you fuckers one on one".

I guess (for me at least) it was all a part of growing up, you know and Im not saying its right (violence rarely is) but I always felt that its a kind of trial by fire, the whole "what doesn't kill me..." thing and to involve the police just wouldn't be right.

Yeah, I sorta agree discgolfer ... but since we've never experianced it, it's probably hard for us to say.

Actually, the only time I got beaten up ever was in form 2 at intermediate when I asked another guy out !!!FOR A DARE!!! I might add. I mean, I remember someone else ate some grass, so I had to do it, my honour was on the line.

But anyway, in repeat circumstances Police involvment might not be a bad idea.

i dont want to sound like im going bhack to the old-style lucifer sam but any teacher who ignores Bullying esp if they are right in front of it and do shit abhout it - deserve to be taken from the classroom, marched to the city square and Shot.

I agree with the whole "growing up" thing, getting bullied is all a part of growing up, and you probably do turn out a stronger person for it (sometimes) but I definately think police need to be involved in most cases, especially cases that involve older students ie 5th-7th form. There is some seriously fucked up shit that goes down sometimes, shit that noone should have to go through during school hrs when theyre trying to learn. It can really disrupt your learning if your constantly watching your back in fear.

I would be more than interested to know if the respondants to this topic came from co-ed or uni-sexed schools......................

Co - ed all the way through.

Come to think about it most of the kids I wound up scraping with "outside" of school all went to Westlake boys, something to think about.

heres an example.

I go to a co-ed school, have never been in a fight or felt threatened in any way whatsoever.
My brother went to a boys school and ended up getting in heaps of fights/scraps whatever you want to call them. I guess for males not having anything female to focus youre attention on you need a way to vent that sexual frustration or something? :S and i also guess that turns to violence.

as i say schools should run there disipline system like the army - anybody caught or denounced for assault, theft etc, should be court martialled then referred to the police, But it comes down to the age of the students - i make no distinction between youth and adult justice, we really ned to remove this PC Bullshit about having youth justice - if you do the crime you oughta do the time, no excuses.

i dont know about the police, but i think schools should definitely get their act together about school bullying. it really disrupts kids from their learning when they're constantly in fear of being picked on/beaten up.
i remember before i started high school, my parents were going to send me to a private school until my stepdad asked what the school's policy on bullying was, and the principal replied 'bullying? we don't have bullying at THIS SCHOOL' that was the end of that. Some principals seem to remain oblivious to the whole thing, when the issue needs to be confronted. (ie it happens at all schools and they need to recognise that)

as ive mentioned School usu (and almost always do) call the police if a student is found to have a small amount of cannabis or alcohol on them but seldomly do they call the cops if someone is smashed over to the point where they require medical attention; also police are called in when a teacher is assaultd and/or has there stuff nicked but rarely when this occurs student on student, And once more if this sort of behavior occurs in a higher learning institute or in publi cthe police are called, why not in schools, so i guess that assault and theft are legal in schools huh??

Dude your dealing with minors to though, don't forget that.

//Dude your dealing with minors to though, don't forget that.

i dont care if they are minors or not - these guys should be responsible for there own actions

If minors are allowed to get away with shit like bullying without being taught a lesson, they probably wont stop.

i was bullied at school, wish i did a "colombian" back then, pity u can't easily obtain gun in NZ. Beside im such a gentle and friendly person i probably don't have the heart to pull the trigger.

i thought it was columbine

Yeah i'd agree especially for serious repeat offenders.
Personally I suffered form a bit of bullying at school mostly verbal more than physical but it still definitely had a serious effect, theres only so long that you can go for being taunted and pushed around before you either snap and lash out, or start to wonder if maybe you really are lower than ant shit and that you must deserve to get picked on.
I started wagging school to stay away from my tormentors and at one point in 3rd form it got so serious that I was away from school for more than half a term, i'd also had quite a serious knee injury which required surgery and one idiot that thought I needed to be picked on decided to push me off my crutches down a flight of stairs to see if I was faking the injury.
I just lived with it but it did really make it hard for me to feel good about myself for a long time, I think it can be especially difficult during teenage years when things are a bit weird and over emotional anyway, it would be interesting to see how big a proportion of teenage suicides in NZ are aggravated as a result of bullying, maybe serial bullys that have even a minor degree of involvement in a suicide should be charged with manslaughter.

Any teacher that stands by and watches a violent act between pupils and does nothing should be fired on the spot.

I solved my bullying problem by making friends and hanging out with the biggest drug dealer in school, no one fucks with them, but ultimately it didn't help out that much, I didn't get bullied anymore but I still got fuck all school work done.
Sorry about the mindless ramble, this subject fires me up a bit.

it peaked for me in 4th form then in 5th form it died away in the first 3 months

but 4th form was the worst.....i was told by my principal that the cops could do shit (not literally, he did say "the police cannot do anything about it") If i had the strength and courage that i do today, id have My old Principal Shot for this.....If the police can bust up a kid with pot why cant they go after kids who assault (even seriously) other students??

thats ridiculous, you need a scary family - problem solved.

Sam
the thing is
students have as much right to push through an assult charge as any other member of society
there is nothing stopping a student going to the cops and laying assult charges on bullies
and people have been trying to work out ways of addressing bullying for a while, it is a difficult topic

they do??

then how come the cops dont do anything??

because cops are cunts. they don't care about people or the community, just about their own power trips.

too true.

like monkey puzzle suggested, bullying is a big reason behind NZ's phenomenal rate of teen, especiallly male, suicides.

Hey, wasnt there a forum subject recently about what NZ's best at? ...well we're Number One as far as teen suicide rates per head are concerned - last time i checked.

Yeah bullies are ussually half retarded cunts that end up working at a petrol staion for the rest of their lives.

Hey my brother works at a petrol station!

oops

Ooh freaky today I find out he's been given the flick ... new owners. It was only part time anyway though ...

bullys, suicidists, they're all retarded pussys man

U can take on a whole lot of Trauma from skool because of bully assholes. I had a pretty crap time at skool because of a few arseholes, but u want to know how I survived? by doing NOTHING, I just went to skool everyday, then I ended up at Uni, then that environment was gone! I drink with nerds and people who would have been assholes to me at skool all the time, hell... A guy who gave me hell a couple of times at skool I was having drinks with at my cousin's 21st, sitting round laughing our asses off and enjoying WWIII.

Anyways, moral is that once skool is over that hellish existence hopefully ends. Anybody remember Columbine? life can get worse, but if they had waited 2 weeks untill the end of skool, the environment full of bullies they loathed so much would have been gone.

Hell, I was at a goth rave sorta thing on Halloween in Well. three guys who look like ex-bully arseholes roll up to the door, take one look in, then run away....

Im at a all girls school, i have friends who have been at my school and gone to coed schools, apparently its alot worse at a single sex school. Thats just what I heard. On friday I was talking to a girl who is one of those people who is just not ment to fit it with the norm, she looks and acts different to pretty much everyone at the school which im at. Ive known her for a while and known that she got bullied, however when she was in detention on friday and went over and talked to her. She was in detention for punching a girl in he collarbone. I asked her why she did it and she replyed that the girl had been caling her a freak, tripping her up, spreading rumours about her for the past two years and pretty much madeher life hell. Aside from the tripping up thing, there was no physical violence, so it went un noticed. I asked her why she didnt tell on her, apparently she did, the girl got told to stop it - then she did it worse, and the rest of the form joined in. Wow what a great system. It took being punched for the school to notice and give them after school detention. They also wrote each other notes saying sorry, the girl showed me hers it said 'im sorry i was mean to you for the past two years, it was mean of me to call you a freak, to puch youover, to get everyone to be mean to you, and to spread lies about you. Your friend, (culprits name here). Isnt that lovely? and thats all she got. I went up to the bully and asked her how long her collar bone would be sore for, it didnt hurt anymore. Funny how when i was talking to the one who had been bullied she was withdrawn, un confident, and unwilling to trust or belive me thats its cool to be different and that oneday everythings going to be fine.

Just thought id share that. I know there are worse stories out there and as a child phone counsiller I hear shit like that. The typical "solution" is to go tell on them, but like thats gonna work....

I was at an all girls school for one year in 3rd form before moving to a co-ed school and to be honest it was the worst year of my life, school-wise. It seemed that most of the girls had nothing better to do than criticise each other and turn petty little things like 'blah blah called blah blahs cousins aunties friends daughter a whore' into hugely exaggerated mass bitch fights. I wasn't so much bitched at as an individual but i saw alot of this stuff happen and it just didn't seem like a normal, natural environment to me. After moving back to a co-ed school i was amazed at how different it was, especially with the way that people delt with particular things in normal ways rather than threatening to 'smash' someone, which i found was the most common way of sorting things out at this particular girls school. I'm sure not every all girls school is like this, but this is just what i found from being at one.

i totally agree... obviously i cant speak for guys only schools but being at an all girls school is really bad sometimes... and iv been at one for the last 5 yrs...god knows how we deal with it sometimes...i mean its bad enuff getn ppl u dun really no going on about u but then the very ppl who are sposed to be your friends are backstabbing and bitching..
my skool sposedly has a "gd system" with dealing with it but i think alot of the time even if something is sed or if the bulying is reported, the msg isnt getn thru to the rite ppl, and by the time it does- if it does at all- its often too late neways...
on the sub of police- i can only remember 1 time in my whole time at high school where the police got involved- i think it was in 3rd or 4th form and some chik pulled a knife on some other...obviously she got expelled..this is just my opinion but somehow i feel that even in extreme cases the school might not want police involvement because of the bad press related to it- therefore meaning that the school is portrayed in a bad light and mayb its reputation put at risk and all that crap..i know that at a school like mine the rep is very important...like wen ncea was being introduced some chiks wrote in to the paper and used the skools name- they were required to write fromal apologies to the BOT cos wat they sed went against the skools opinion...i dont agree with this at all. i agree with wat the other ppl sed- if its bad then it should be dealt with properly.
but im getn off the topic... another thing tho- theft. skools are bloody useless at dealing with it. the process is too slow... if a theft is reported on a certain day then it should be dealt with on that day. the next day aint good enuff cos by that stage the person responsible has had a chance to get rid of what they stole...just a cupl of weeks ago my friend had her wallet stolen from her bag during class (cos our skool is stupid enuff to make students leave bags out in corridors in sum classes)... a teacha saw something sus but didnt do nething. wen reported it wasnt even slightly dealt with til the next day and by that time its obviously too late!
i could go on an on but hv gone on enuf- sorry!
best 2 evryone...

I think it just depends on what sort of person u are and the ppl you hang out with, not whether or not ur school is co-ed or single sex. I'm at an all girl's school and sure there has been cattiness within certain 'groups' but my group hasn't been victim to any of that kinda stuff. Not saying we're perfect and we've never had fights, but the fact that we're all girls hasn't affected a thing.

i guess it all depends on the situation and how savere the bulling is. but definatly some bullies should be taught a lesson

I agree

I got to an all girls school and here we dont get that much bullying, i dont know weither its become at all boys, or co d school ther are, but we seem to get on fine together. To be honest i'm in a stable group with little bitchings, i dont really see the other side to the school, but i supose they keep that "side" outta here. Its all about other people thinking this about other people or other people "sterotyping" other people

One of the worst advice an adult can gave a kid who is being bullied is by telling them to "harden up" or "why don't u give them a hiding?".

hey good advice!

another bad one is to "ignore it and it will go away"

my grandfather (major hard Scottish dude) said to my father... 'you beat him up, or I'll beat you up' Apparently my dad was more fearful of his father....seemed to work..

now that there is some nurturing parenting! ??

//"ignore it and it will go away"

that reason alone is probably why so many victims of bullys committ suicide, you cant ignore physical pain, even more so psychological.

if youre to scared to stand up for youreself youre not doing anything to stop a bully are you?

yeah if u tell on bullies, it's only getting worse. You should stand up to the bully and fight them! Not back down or be a snitch! This way they'll learn their lesson of not messing with you. It works!
