After watching a couple of bands down at me local last night, I started thinking about which genre we are best at. I think it's LO-FI. Beautiful melodies tucked in behind snarling guitars, swirling drums and simple bass. The freedom of songs truely crafted in the bedroom, without care of airwaves or $5000 grants. Music that requires close attention or miss its diamonds. A fender strat through a hotcake into an old valve amp. To me this music is king, I am in love.

There is definitely an amazing lo-fi scene out there, as you said fish, with incredible floating melodies and screaming guitars. But I think what NZ is best at, rather than just a particular genre is the way our songwriters feel, think and delicately piece together their music. You can tell with some bands exactly what part of the country they write from, whether it be a wild and cold west coast beach, a buzzing city, a mates garage with a box of lion red or a wee villa in Te Awamutu.
There is a drive and passion that you can hear in nz music, regardless of how loud the amp is turned up. There is a relaxed atmos portrayed - even in the heaviest bands. We are diverse, we convey, we entertain, we provide a path for expression. We rage, we float, we smile and we dance.
I will always be an advocate and avid raging fan of New-Zealand music, regardless of what genre.
Sorry for blabbing there.

i agree with pissmefish - i think lo-fi we do particularly well. there's a huge underground of lo-fi artists out there, you can basically turn up to any of the main centres and bowl along to a shabby wee pub and someone will be breaking waves and being totally innovative and compelling with their lo-fi-ness.
but also your comment, "drive and passion" - yeah, totally agree. there's a distinct strain/drive in kiwi music ... as someone said below - can almost see the landscape. i think that's the key.
someone annoyed me talking about nz on air and nesian mystick and how they "aren't from here" so why should they get funding, but since i can't be bothered finding it again and replying, here's a good place.
they live here and their music reflects what it means for them to live here. i don't care where they are from. their music reflects the experience of living in nz. i'm not particularly hooked into that genre, but shit i'm certainly prepared to have my taxes spent on what they do. it's worthy music and it tells me more about nz.

Nz is great at having loads of talented and beautiful bands that can play to 50 people at their local and give a better performance than what a "big name" band will ever give! also we are good at avoiding the commercialism that plagues bands in other countries... we just play music because we love it rather than playing it just because it will make us loads of money!u

New Zealand is good at providing the world with munters who care about nothing but rugby, rugby, beer, etc. We also have a lot of musicians who mainly just want to get paid. Man I miss those big barbies from when I was a kid. The food, the laughs, the games of go home stay home, spotlight and knock door run (we were kids after all), making out with the cute friends that always tagged along with my cousins or the daughters of some of my parent friends, sun, then rain, then sun... none of that mattered after sunset, eh *grin*.

Hmmmmm,
I think you are leaving the door wide open there for arguments sake, rather than deciding 'what genre we are best at'. Is it really a question of Does NZ have a genre we are best at ie in your case low fi, or will you happen to go and see another live band/act next week, next month that is completely different to what you have recently seen.
For what it's worth I think a lot of early NZ music fits the lo-fi genre, but we are see recent cross-overs with new and old bands still generating this quality. This could be for many reasons ie budget, sound, etc.... my 2 cents.
That was kind of the idea, that people ...
That was kind of the idea, that people would voice their opinion on what genre nz is best at. I met some pacific island guys in the weekend that are doing great things with r n b is that what nz is best at? Blindspot esk nu-metal is that what nz is best at? Scribe esk rap is that what nz is best at? Elemnop pop-punk is that what nz is best at? Carley Binding pop is that what nz is best at? These musicians are all excelling in their genre but are they what nz is best at?
In regards to going to a gig next week and finding something else I will like, that will most definitely happen, I think my opinion is valid because of the number and variety of gigs I see. In my opinion LO-FI is what we do best.
//In my opinion LO-FI is what we do ...
//In my opinion LO-FI is what we do best.
so why is it that they struggle to get people to their gigs??
is it the music? are lo-fi lovers the minority?
i think there are some bloody brilliant bands out there - don't get me wrong - i see them most weeks and love it...
my question is - if that is what we are best at, why do bands like that struggle to make a fiver at the door??
