There is definitely an amazing lo-fi scene out there, as you said fish, with incredible floating melodies and screaming guitars. But I think what NZ is best at, rather than just a particular genre is the way our songwriters feel, think and delicately piece together their music. You can tell with some bands exactly what part of the country they write from, whether it be a wild and cold west coast beach, a buzzing city, a mates garage with a box of lion red or a wee villa in Te Awamutu.
There is a drive and passion that you can hear in nz music, regardless of how loud the amp is turned up. There is a relaxed atmos portrayed - even in the heaviest bands. We are diverse, we convey, we entertain, we provide a path for expression. We rage, we float, we smile and we dance.
I will always be an advocate and avid raging fan of New-Zealand music, regardless of what genre.

Nz is great at having loads of talented and beautiful bands that can play to 50 people at their local and give a better performance than what a "big name" band will ever give! also we are good at avoiding the commercialism that plagues bands in other countries... we just play music because we love it rather than playing it just because it will make us loads of money!u

Watching our own little country and Aussie squabble over the Pavlova is incredibly funny.

and on a critical note Over-Indulguing in PC garbage ( LTSA, KiwiBank) that is suffocating essential govt funding (defence, law and order, Education, Health)
