Just wondering how things are going on the other side of the world. In the over-saturated, commercial pop-rock world of America, with nationalistic-patriotism and 24 hour brainwashing Bushisms, I'm dying to hear what the rest of the world is up to. God knows our country will never tell us, unless there's money to be made in the process.
I'm the rythum guitarist of the Detroit based band RIB, and I hope Y'all don't mind if I jump in on the NZmusic.com, in order to catch up on what's going down over there. And perhaps properly represent the "true american" perspective, not the regurgitated Hollywood glam crap, and the "We're #1" attituded our Gov't likes to promote.
With all respect; - Douglas -

Wow, what an intro, hi, welcome...I listened to a couple of your tracks on your site and I reckon RIB's right up my alley.
//I'm dying to hear what the rest of the world is up to
Ummm, well, basically we all sit around complaining about america....erk!
Nah, joke (laughs feebly). If you're interested you can listen to some of the cool music that's being made in NZ thanks to THIS SITE - we've got lots of loud jangly guitar rock, lots of raw folksy quirky pop and lots of funky/mellow hip-hop and dub. AND some pretty laid-back electronica, AND some heavy shouty metal, AND there seems to be quite a bit of stuff that noone really knows how to describe.
So...what's your choice of aural poison?

Ah the beautifully grimey and always rockin Motor City, I have some very vague memories of passing through about 10 years ago.
Nice to see a seppo without the attitude, but Michigan has always been a good honest no bullshit state.
Tried checking out your stuff but the site was taking too long to open so i'll try again later then get back to ya! Any chance you could push old dubya into a sheet metal press if he comes down to Rock City?
the world would be a much safer place without idiots like good ole George.
Looking forward to hearing your take on world affairs soon, and see how you think NZ music really does stack up from a U.S point of veiw.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Heather! I'm sorry you had to look upon our janky, low-budget webpage (we're updating as we speak). Thanks for your compliments on the music. We just finished our debut 12 song album "...For Your Pleasure", which we're still waiting for the duplication process to finish. But anyday now! I look forward to checking out the sites posted througout this one!
As for my preference of poison; I'm into a lot of different things, but mainly progressive, well-written material that moves the soul. Music that you can tell someone put their heart and soul into making. Whether it's funk, metal, jazz, folk. But in the last few years (after having spent a year in Europe) I've really fallen for electronic type stuff. Trance, trip-hop. I love it! And living here in Detroit doesn't hurt either. Despite all the Eminem crammed down one's throught, Detroit is very supportive of Electronic music & DJ's. But to name a few artists to illustrate: Tool, Pink Floyd, St Germain, Paul Oakenfold, James Brown, Radiohead, Ozric Tenticles, Nightmares on Wax...... just to name a few.
However! Country music? Be grateful you're not subjected to that twangy, country-bumpkin, ear piercing garbage.

Seriously, it is like any other genre - if you only listen to what is spoon fed you, it'll be bollocks. There is a whole bunch of wicked country music coming out all over the place.

Hey, Monkey! We're still trying to find a way to rid ourselves of this war-mongering, election stealing, oil tycoon! If only we could voice our opinions without being hunted down and labeled as non-patriotic terrorists. It's sadly pathetic.
And, Floppy! Yes, there is a huge market for young bands. We've got a local punk band, the Dollfaces, who range from ages of 15-17, and they're playing at the top Detroit venues, and in a few weeks are headlining an after party for the commercially successful White Stripes.

I agree with you on that, Eddie! I'm a stickler for old school County. Not this, as they call it here, New Country. I prefer those tear-jerking harmonies, and finger-pickin' banjo solos! But again, here in the States, if it's not young, hot, and dancable; no radio play!
Didn't mean to be so hard on Country music.

Thanks for all the links! I'm checking through 'em as fast as I can get to it! Just finished dissecting Mother Guru's site (had to check them first, due to a 15min epic song we wrote called "The Guru"). I loved the bios! I think Darryl is my long lost twin brother. I couldn't find any links to sample any music (did I miss something?), but judging by their history of music, intuitions of the future, and the live photos (holy s#!t you can draw a crowd!), I've got a feeling your music will be right up my alley!

In my opinion, Tool is the greatest ...
In my opinion, Tool is the greatest band! Not just because of their music, but also through the way they promote themselves. Every CD package is something fresh & original. They're not plastered all over magazines, and MTV. They keep themselves mysterious, and you don't grow tired of 'em. They're completely independant, and seem to always be a step ahead of everyone. And when it comes to their music, Holy Cow!!! Their musicianship is second to none, vocals & lyricism never before attempted, with a message far more intellegent than any Rap / Rock / Diva / Kiddie-pop artist can even come close to. The scary thing is, They're almost too good. It's not right! A lyric from their Aenima album, "I sold my soul to make a record, and dips#!t, you bought one..." always freaks me the hell out. But out of all the music I listen to, If I had to choose one CD to be stranded on a desert ilsand with, I'd always choose Tool.

I checked out a few more NZ bands' websites... Marystaple / Blindspott / The Datsuns / (and tried Shihad, but was directed to something else).
I gotta give NZ some credit on your ability to design kick-ass webpages! You make us "seppos" look like a bunch of cheap bastards (which we are). Unfortunately I couldn't get the Marystaple MP3's to download (I'm not working with the highest in technology computerware), but I was successful with The Datsuns! I was surprised to see the Conan O'Brien clip. I remember watching that episode when it aired here in the States. We had just finished our rehersal when it came on the tele. At first (I hate to admit), we panned the hell out 'em, especially the singer's blk/white striped shirt. But by the end of the song, we were all like, "Hmmmm....... that was pretty good!"
And as for Blindspott; that's a....... um,....... that's a %&#@-in' sweet webpage! I think I sat for a half-hour just moving the mouse around the screen. Creepy sound effects, perfect for Halloween! But again, no music to download.

Ah yes, Shihad would have redirected to Pacifier, they changed their name because their US label said that Shihad was to close to Jihad and everyone was a bit nervous 'coz of 9/11 and thought the CIA would interfere with them rectally and that the US buying public would shy away from the name...isn't it great how all your industry execs in the good ole USA seem to think that the average american is a moron with no ability to destinguish between an Arab Holy war and the name of a band!
That's because, the execs keep the ...
That's because, the execs keep the average american moronic, uneducated, medicated, and terrified of Islamic Fundamentalists. Our programing here consists of Reality TV, 24 hour gov't filtered news channels, and Hollywood Celebrety Lifestyles. The longer they keep us from learning about the rest of the world, the less likely we'll be to question their actions/motives. Not to mention (AND PLEASE, THIS IS NOT A RACIAL REMARK, JUST A TRUISM), the entertainment industry here in America is 90% owned/funded by Jewish Execs/Producers. Especially now, after 9/11, any sympathy towards Arab anything is immediately silenced/changed/or left for low-budget Public Access Television (which nobody watches). It's not surprising to hear they made Shihad change their name. In fact my first thought was, "Wow, I wonder if they're Arabic!"

Dude, funny you should mention it, I'm Jewish, but don't worry there is a very large number of us who also support the US govt getting the fuck out of everybodies business, those fucks that run the US entertainment networks shouldn't be allowed to even associate themselves with being Jewish anymore, besides I think the US govt had more to do with 9/11 than any terrorist groups anyway, Look at the history of any of the major fundamentalist groups over the years the only successful ones have had US backing to some extent and even then the still couldn't organise a descent fart at a Curry eating contest, no man, it was the CIA all the way on that one, they did it to their own people just so fuckhead george bush could have his way with the world oil supplies.
That's no joke, Monkey! After all, it ...
That's no joke, Monkey! After all, it was Pres Reagen & Papa Bush who armed and trained Saddam's army to fight Iran. And I was shocked to learn that the CIA trained Osama Bin Laden & the Taliban in order to fight off the Russians. Woops! And isn't it ironic, that on Sept 10th, on Bush's desk was the complete outline/battle plan for invading Afganistan & Iraq. As if they knew they were gonna have to go there soon........ hmmmmm!?

reading your posts give me hope for the American people, it looks as though some of you are finally waking up to what the world already knows, the US political system is profoundly corrupt, the old addage applies perfectly to the US government..Power Corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Why do you think NZ banned US warships from entering our harbours in the first place, so they invaded us with low grade TV shows and McDonalds instead-mass consumerism to conquer the world, all hail the mighty golden arches THE NEW WORLD ORDER.
Free market intergration=cultural demise!
sorry if my posts seem overly political, I finally got into your site, your band rocks too!

Wow - political alright. It's refreshing though. You wouldn't happen to have exams on at the moment and be practicing your arguements for your essay on American Studies? I think the sad thing is that young people are listening to crap music about shagging, Bitches etc. instead of New Zealand's awesome music that has so much more to offer. That relates more to reality rather than fantasy or buying into the latest clothes (or lack of them) and car model in the backround. Some music is like reading a Cosmopolitan - where you just feel fat and ordinary afterward.

It's a long time since I last sat an exam..about 13 years I think...I just like to put my point of view out and get people thinking a bit.
You're so right, NZ music has so much more to offer than the mass produced tripe that we have forced on us by weak minded money driven program directors in this country.
Commercial radio can suck my arse dry till it's gums start bleeding, it's all good having a quota of NZ music on radio but what good does it do if all they'll play are the established and outdated imatation music that they seem to think is relevant..NZ indie bands need more exposure too, like Greenmans "Soundcheck" it was supposed to be for unsigned and unknown bands, ok so he put us on it and I guess we fit that catagory, but what the fuck are Dave Dobbyn and Augustino being played on it for?
They already have exposure and don't need to be eased into the public view in such a way.
anyway enough rant, i'm boring!
