Why Are the Ignorant Lucky?

Ok Ok, now heres the time to get ur opinions out there ok :)
Im stuck in a debate at the mo', (school of course, only the biggest one between our school and the boys school) i haven't debated since 3rd form and for some reason I was picked for this HUGE debate..tomorrow night. We are the affirmative team and the moot is that 'the ignorant are lucky'. Now 'the ignorant' means people who are UNINFORMED and DO NOT KNOW about something. It is NOT A CHOICE. lucky = happiness, being better off etc. I have a few points but its difficult writing my speech. Things about morals would be helpful and commercialism etc. But remember it doesnt mean that the ignorant are aware of something that they have chosen to ignore, but simply do not know about. ie, the kid who's pet dies and his mum tells him it went on holiday, or if u were unware ofo all the bad things in the world, then ud therefore be happier right? help me ppl, just agree with the moot for now, argue later :> THAnks!

Forums: The Bar,

They're not and your going to have one hell of a time forming an argument to the contrary (best of luck!)

That said Ive spent the last hour and a half bouncing idea's for a defence around and all I came up with that might even be considered of use (to what degree I don't know) is the whole "lost tribesmen of the Amazon" type angle. You know simple folk, leading simple lives without all the pressures of modern society/life etc etc.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Yeah, but whenever they come across an undiscovered tribe, aren't they usually being ravaged by disease?

Yea I sorta touched upon that in my speech, about the absence of eating disorders in isolated tribes, due to them being unaffected by the industrialzed worlds ideals of body image etc. oh and the diseases thing, they are ravaged by diseases brought in by westerners.

Think of how much easier Keanu's life would have been if he'd just taken the blue pill.

Does 'the ignorant are lucky' mean they are lucky because they are ignorant, ie. ignorance is bliss, or as ignorant people they experience luck in various areas of their life?

Enlightenment is both something that people desire for and can have forced apon them by the real world.
So it follows that ignorance is both the absence of that desire, and the 'luck' of avoiding/being avoided by the real world. So the ignorant can be lucky.

...I should've used the words 'concurrently' and 'vissavi' in their somewhere...

The great thing about alzhiemers, is you get to meet new people every day.

With little to consider, your choices become simple.
With simplicity, there is comfort, within comfort there is bliss.

They know not what they miss & miss it they do not.

All you have to win is argue that everyone is ignorant - a person who thinks they know everything is clearly a fool. This proved all you have to do is prove that everyone has luck...how? World of opposites approach - how could individuals realise they were unlucky without contrast? They couldn't it's impossible. Therefor everyone who has experienced bad luck must have, at some stage in their lives, experienced good luck. These facts + finness = case closed.

"If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all"

Well yes. All people are ignorant and lucky. Just as all people are enlightened and unlucky.

Everyone is ignorant and nobody knows everything this is true but I would argue this "I don't need to know everything I just need to know more than you".
I would site every country that was settled by Europeans and how the indigenous people faired upon thier arrival as proof of this statement.

How did the church gain such a grip on the world during the middle ages? Could it have been through fear and superstition breed from ignorance?

People have and in some parts of the world still are killing and being killed due to ignorance.

Also Im not sure about you but I don't conider all the people who contracted various forms of cancer and other diseases from DDT/asbestos/cigarettes/radiation/lead and all manner of other things, before they were found to be harmful, lucky.

"Ignorance is bliss" Bollocks to that, what you don't know can hurt you and most likely will.

Knowledge is power!

But then again what do I know...

All the people in the world already know everything they can be bothered learning about. All other knowledge is either beyond their comprehension or irrelevant to their life. Although some of us are hungry to learn more and more, some people are quite happy with a relatively small amount of knowledge, as it is enough for them to live a happy fulfilling life. This person may also claim to know everything, and quite rightly, because they are trully the masters of their simple lives. They know what they like, and they like what they know.

One could argue that the notion of luck means more to the ignorant than the enlightened. Luck takes the place of logic or reason, removes causality, removes accountability.

hmmm. Have you ever noticed that the more you learn the less you know.

Because the enlightened know more about their world than the ignorant, does it follow that they must experience less luck? Or is luck proportionally relative to how much you know about your world?

You know way less when you learn more. I think you get way better at asking the right questions.

luck in general? I thought it was "lucky" in reference to "ignorance is bliss".

That would be a different moot though.

hmm. the wonderful world of semantics.

...the wonderful english language...

because they cant fully understand anything around then, and not realising whats crap about youre surroundings makes you clearly lucky.

Well...debates over...was incredibly funny, and really close, but we lost by a very slim margin. bugger. It was only because they had ONE really good speaker on their team, we bet them in all other speakers and areas. Owell. Just a note tho, ignorance is not stupidity or being thick, just being uninformed of a certain subject. I talked about alzheimers too about an institution that resembles the 1950's, because thats the year its patients believe it is. Therefore instead of continuosly reinforming them that no, its is actually the year 2003 which then causes distress, they go along with their patients keeping them ignorant, but feeling happy. anyway...it's over now, probably the last debate I'll ever do. Thaks 4 ur ideas but was a little late heh, thanks anyways :> if knowledge is power, and power corrupts and destroys and causes despair, then the ignorant are definately lucky.

luck = random chance
lucky = random chancey

I don't see how being ignorant improves random chance occurances.

Whether you know a lot or not much at all does not affect your burden. Your conscience does. It is what you choose to do with the information you have that gives it weight.

the ignorant are not actually lucky at all. the only "luck" they may experience is not knowing that they have no luck or are not lucky. but then they wouldn't know that not knowing was lucky as they don't know what luck is, which brings us back to the original question really.

How does one "experience luck" without being lucky?

ignorance doesn't recognise luck - or bad luck.

as for me...i do.

NAh, ignorance is way better, Less pressure on the brain cells. Ain't i right ralph?

err....?? for you, yes??

How happy is the moron?
He doesn't give a damn.

I wish I were a moron.
My god! Perhaps I am.

Free speech, free speech, for the dumb, for the dumb, free fucking speech!
