Pissed off with CD Copy Protection..?

Apparently it's THIS easy to get past it....

"A flaw has been unravelled in the CD-Copy protection technology developed by SunnComm Technologies Inc. which is so simplistic, it requires the stroke of a single key to exploit.

The flaw, discovered by John Halderman (a Princeton graduate student), in SunComm's MediaMax CD3 software invokes a work around solution to disable the "autorun" encrytion software on a protected disk. Quite simply, by holding down the shift key when accessing a CD in Windows, the encryption software designed by SunComm to encrypt the contents of that compact disk simply fails to ever execute.

In stopping this auto execution, the software which is designed to install a proprietary driver to access the contents of the CD is cancelled.

BMG claimed to be aware of the exploit, stating that the technology was designed to be a "speed bump" for users who wish to copy the CD rather then a full fledged lock down of that CD due to their desires to not cripple the CD's playability and flexibility."

Dunno if this works on the CD's that are Copy Protected over here (apparently there's all sorts of different technologies used as Copy Protection), but if it does I can finally play those pesky Copy Protected CD's in my computer!
Seems to work on my Radiohead - Hail to the Thief just dandy!

Forums: The Bar,

heh, gotta love that shift key.

thats just about as bad as the first copy protected cds - draw around the outter edge of the cd with a black pen, and wa-la!

Doesn't work on my only copy protected cd ... One Said To The Other single by Living End. Stupid man ... it won't play on my computer, won't play on my discman ... and when I've got access to a stereo (which isn't often) it only plays about a quarter of the time on that! Dunno why I bought it ... should've just stuck to the mp3 I already had of it! At least it wasn't an album I spose ... but then I would be returning it if it was ...

Ever since I loaded "itunes", I have never had a problem with copying Copy controlled disks.

well the program i use isn't affected at all by that copy protection thing, i tested it out with the new apc album i bought. copied fine.

Yeah my mac seems to totally ignore copy protection. Itunes rocks! The only thing that doesn't play them is my bloody stereo! Some genius who came up with that.
