Windys' Winners

Forums: NZ Music,

as a wellington musician I feel like these awards were completely irelevant to the vibrant scene thriving in wellington...no mention of trinity roots, black seeds, fat freddys drop, stinkmagnetic tapes(champions of the welly under ground soon to release the mighty Cortina, and perhaps Disaster Radio?), or ghostplane, agent alvin, tommy etcetcetc

no booze backstage
no boozed wellingotn musicians in the audience
no fun

next year..if this event survives...i would suggest formally inviting the wellington musos who doing the good shit...giving them heaps of piss...haing a party...public voting....not giving awards to the MC of the show (thats just wierd) have it at a bar or somewhere musch more casual...the whole thing felt like it was trying to be much bigger than it was...an embaresment

With everything taken in to account, at the end of the day, all in all..... Melbourne was the winner on the night

I know what you mean, no disrespect to the bands, but it's the same kind of thing which lets down NZ music so much in general, the industry stalwarts vs nobody. Like the same successful candidates for NZ on air funding every time, a refusal to acknowledge the diversity for fear of losing one's imagined little niche in an industry which can easily starve itself out. I really miss Wellington and the awesome range of talent and originality, I don't miss the tall poppy syndrome. Yay originality and diversity. Good will win out.

Here here.
There there.
They're there.
Here here.
They're here.

that'd make a great haiku.

It'd make a great HAKA!!

C'mon bro I want juicy bitchy responses lets get dirty

OK then.. (deep breath..)
the FARGIN ARSEHOLES IN CHARGE!!! THEYRE IGNORING ME AND MY TALENT!!!BASTARDS!!! IF IT WASN'T FOR THEM I WOULD RULE THE KINGDOM OF WELLINGTON MUSIC, AND I"D CRUSH THEM IN MY HANDS LIKE THE ANAEMIC LITTLE WEEDS THEY ARE THEN BATHE THEM IN THE ACID BATH OF MY ROCK..ness..thing. AND I WOULD'VE GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT IT IF HADN'T BEEN FOR YOU MEDDLING KIDS!!!

I'm not too sure why we need a wellington music awards. The winners pacifier, fur patrol, rhombus and the NZSO are all recognised on a national scale. seems odd.

hey, but the awards part aside, it was an interesting array of performers playing, many whom i would never have the opportunity to see in my closed off little world. Much respect to midi for their hard work, hopefully with lessons learnt from this year, next year can be a big improvment. its good to see motherfuckers working hard for music.

However since talented wellington motherfuckers will be cleaning up at the b-nets and the tuis next year..it will probably be redundant.

wow blink and here i was thinking that you thought the awards sucked hard bolied eggs out of a labradors bum...i guess they were noy so bad after all

nice one ian! 50 cents each way as usual?

i thought there were good and bad points. The capital times review summed it up pretty well, no need for me to repeat what everyone else is saying.

unless you want me to repeat it?

basically.
Bad points
- The event was not really representative of what is happening in wellington music.
- The Winners failed to reflect artists currently working hard from wellington (in shihads responses, you could tell Tom was a bit embarrassed winning so much)
- The Big venue was cold and clinical.
- the ticket price was too much. Hardly any wellington muscians could actually afford to go.
- It was trying to be the "tui's" as opposed to perhaps following the better "awards model" of the b-nets.
- It seemed it was targeted at quite an old age group. Which is fine but odd. The Hosts Liz and Frankie did a fine job...but lacked the excitement and humour of younger hosts like Hugh Sundae (b-nets)
- the main image used in the marketing campaign looked like a photo of Kody from the Mint Chicks (an auckland based band)

good points
- nice idea, by some well meaning people.
- wide range of acts playing..saw some unusual stuff
-a building year, so obviously shit that was crap will hopefully be improved upon
- really slick and professional show where everything ran quite smoothly

had it been at indigo or bodega with maybe 4 bands playing 3-4 songs each and a fun night of getting drunk and cheering with friends celebrating the un-heralded motherfucking fine talent in this city...i would of been stoked.

I don't know how Fur Patrol could possibly have had more airplay in the last year than Pacifier ...

I think the idea could work ... but a little more imagination in the categories wouldn't hurt things ... how about Live band of the year, rock/dub/pop/solo etc. band of the year, gig of the year (maybe awarded to the venue) ... and public voting wouldn't go astray either ... set up a website and Bob is your uncle.

//Next year's awards will introduce new categories and a full and public voting system.

Well I didn't see that.

I didn't go to this event, but I was under the impression, from the acts performing, that the awards were aimed more at bands of that level, rather than "international" acts who originated here.

That is pretty shitty really. I mean, Gee, a band on a major label sold the most albums *gasp* Heavens No!
