Jeff Buckley - Live at Sin-E (Legacy Edition): an expanded version of the old 4-song EP from 1993. Now with over two hours of music spread over two discs, and with a bonus DVD included. It's just Jeff and a guitar through two sets comprised mostly of covers, with some orginals thrown in. His interpretative skill is staggering - here he does Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Edith Piaf, Leonard Cohen and Van Morrison (his versions of The Way Young Lovers Do and Sweet Thing have to be heard to be believed) among others. And who can resist that voice? His guitar skills are also on full display here (he's not half bad), as well as his sense of humour (evident in the between-song monologues). So, a great purchase. Buy it now if you haven't done so already!

And some books:

Gunter Grass - My Century (100 short stories for each year of the 20th Century - from a German's perspective)
J.M. Coetzee - Waiting For The Barbarians (most recent Nobel Laureatte. I've read three of his novels already - including his newie Elizabeth Costello, and I'm hooked)

//Gunter Grass - My Century

I got a proof copy of this in the original German at my local used book store.

I think you mentioned something about reading My Century some time ago, vel. Did you read the English? What's it like?

Here's what a geekwad I am: I read it simultaneously in English and German... Read one story in the original, then in English to check comprehension (my German's a bit rusty, it's been nearly ten years since I lived there). It was very good, very detailed.

Well, my German is as good as my Hindi (read: no very good), so I'll stick with the English.

As far as I know, My Century wasn't translated by Grass's usual English translator, Ralph Manheim, because he's, uh, dead. Manheim did some great things with Grass's early work - his translations were never clunky, and read quite amazingly well in a German-flavoured English. Krishna Winston has translated Too Far Afield and Crabwalk, and she seems quite adept. Michael Henry Heim did My Century - we'll just wait and see.

The only thing I know how to say in Hindi is "I have a lusty monkey."

...which could come in handy, provided you actually have a lusty monkey.

An addendum to my main post:

I also ordered the DVD boxset of Kieslowski's fantastic series, Dekalog, from Amazon. It should arrive soon-ish.

//Kieslowski's fantastic series, Dekalog

Ooh! I have this! Except I didn't buy it, I made my dad tape it off the sundance channel for me. It's fantastic.

Yeah. Ozu's masterpiece Tokyo Story has just been released by Criterion in the USA - with a bucketload of extras. I'm ordering it next month, along with Tarkovsky's epic Andrei Rublev.

What do you think of the 'Charlie's Angels' films, SoldierBoy? :)

Just noting from the different incarnations of this thread that you seem to be very into the slow and contemplative end of film, curious if you're into other stuff too...?

PS. I love 'Tokyo Story', just think it's so beautiful. I watched it with a bunch of flatmates and my partner and half of them fell asleep or left the room because they were so bored and those of us who were into it were realllllly into it.

I tend to like movies that make you think, to put it simply.

The most action-packed film on my list of favourites is probably Blade Runner - and that's not action-packed at all. Then again, Ghost Busters has been a personal fave for ages. :)

I just got somebody's 386 from happy valley dump shop for 3 clams ! it's even got epic pinball and dangerous dave on here. wicked cool.

Boo-ya.

Yeh I just bought absolution as well. What do you think? I love it.
Also: Beach Boys, BeeGees greatest hits. I was in one of those moods a little old with the new.

Absolution is pretty good huh? I've really liked all their albums so far ... they have a cool sound ...

I really like chromatic writing, or that kind of style where the focus is following melody with chords rather than melody over a riff. I mean I like both it's just at the moment I prefer the former. Initially his breathing technique really irritated me, big gasps in between lines but it's obviously just his trademark and I got over it. Big sound for a three piece, what do they do live?

Yeah, I was gonna say that they've got a big sound for the three of them ... they use the piano well too, which is pretty rare these days.

I've got their live DVD, which I can recommend ... I've only heard it on crappy tv speakers, but I hear the 5.1 mix is awesome, too. But that dude has no problems reproducing his studio voice live ...

I know people draw parallels with radiohead and jeff buckley but I could also hear:

Supergrass
Foo Fighters
Queen
Beatles
Beach Boys
QOTSA (Truly)
Jellyfish
Pilot-Although that's probably a fluke I'd be surprised if he had heard any of their material.

Even if the genre was not your cup of tea, it would still be difficult not to appreciate the talent.

Is Absolution an album by someone or a band?

A band called muse. Have you ever heard the jellyfish cover of your name? Jet.

Oh right, got it. Nah, haven't heard that cover... the Wings track? Scary.
