well, I wasn't. I just use winamps default skin. but I find it functions perfectly, and the addition of the media library to 2.9xx is great. I have a rather large mp3 collection, and the media library makes it managable.
I haven't tried out the PC version of I-tunes, but if it's anything like the OS(u)X version, then I don't see the point. I don't want to use my mp3 player to rip or burn my music, or buy music online. I just want it to play music and allow easy access to what's on my comp.
it's a fucking scam really
average CD has say 15 songs
@99c each = roughly $15 (is that US dollars as well???)
price of CD less (distribution and production costs and sleeves and CD and record store mark up) = $FUCK ALL
therefore real cost of mp3 + (website expenses) should = $ just greater than fuck all
which is close enough to free anyway
Browsing through the Apple Store it seems that you can buy some albums for less than it would cost to buy the songs individually. Others cost more, and some aren't available.
apparently the aim was to look forward to a music market that will be purely driven by singles and not albums. this means an artist will release a bunch of songs (a suite) and the consumer can pick and choose which ones they want. i think Apple are anticipating that in the future the album will be an obsolete unit - it won't be relevant to the digital/on-line world of the future.
sounds ok to me, but i've always been heavily into singles and b-sides. there's a nice encapsulated "piece" feel to an album, but that will be achieved by 'suites', no matter what the length/makeup of them will be.
thats one hell of an interesting philosophy, i'm really a purist when it comes to albums, the only time i buy singles is for my alter ego as a DJ ... . , i think there's definitely a place for online music retailing in the i-tunes sense, but just not for me, because
a) i can still download the same tunes illegally for free (and have no scruples about it just yet)
b) i like to actually hold an album in the palm of my hand, and read the liner notes and put it on my shelf with all the other ones
it will be sad if the market for online music grows to the point that it forces the closure of real world record stores.....no matter how well designed a site is, buying online is really a shadow of buying from a real store, with real people and all that ... .
it will also be sad to see the demise of the album. . ..
i'll just have to release a whole series of 70 minute long songs ;)
yeah, i will miss those things too. there is something very wonderfully indulgent and tangible about browsing a record store, but then again places like Records Records will always be about i reckon.
perhaps the new world Apple invisages will cut out a lot of middle men and mean more contact between artist and consumer ... not that that necessarily means more $ ...
i'm only using it as a library for all my albums and to rip my albums into AAC. i don't imagine i'll ever buy a song off the net. apple are doing fine by me.
now they need to release iPhoto, but i guess they probably won't. microsoft are so far behind the times.
I understand that the record labels receive 75 cents of every 99 c sale from iTunes. 24c per sale does not indicate shafting to me.
By the way - I'm now living in new york. the number of ipods seen on the street is incredible - 1 in every 4 people who are 'headphoned up' against the cacophony has those telltale white headphones. Who knows how many more - like me - have an ipod in their pocket but don't use the ipod headphones. it's going off.
i managed to pick up a 1st generation 30 gig one real cheap (from a nz based mac shop too) - just after the new ones came out. the new ones sound mighty expandable, but i really really dig mine. i've got around 4 or 5 days of music on it ... soooo sweet!
iPod too expensive? PC problems got you down?
Might want to try Dell's new foray into expanding markets. The Dell DJ, made by Creative and supposedly cheaper than an iPod with twice the battery life. Potentially nice.
I think the album price is usually capped at about $9.99, no matter how many songs are on it. Seems to be cheaper to me. (Around $18 NZ), although it will be a while to it gets here.
does anyone know how to get around the EMI copy-protection? the latest EMI discs come with their own player on the cd and don't allow access to the .cda files.
Try holding down the shift key when you insert the CD, haven't tried it yet but apparently works on some discs thru BMG (see link below), may be the same technology used in local EMI copy control.
I think you need to do it the first time you pop it in, as it adds a few little creature features of its own to you system. Don't know if you can easily uninstall it....
i've never had any joy with them using iTunes on PC.
they often won't work in car CD players either.
as a gesture, copy-controlling CDs is as effective on downloading as pissing in the ocean.
I've found, Jas, that with burning copy controlled CDs, it depends on the CD player you use. I only know because I burned a couple of copies of Sound Inside for friends for them to have an initial listen when I first got mine, and 1 or 2 of the burned copies wouldn't play on their sound systems. So it is a drop in the ocean, you're right, but it's a start, eh?
maybe.
the things that really shits me about CD copy-controlling though mate is that it's very very expensive to do, so it's effectively become a tool that only the majors can afford.
and honestly, neither of our disc manufacturers have exactly recommended it either.
it's a shitty situation all 'round though, agreed :-)
I suppose the majors have to protect all the money they've invested in the artists they have on their books, entirely a business decision. The more money you make, the more the bastards have to protect against the great unwashed, I guess. It's not one that I agree with, I have to say. If you could afford to do it, would you? It's not something I've thought a great deal about, really. I've only started to have all these sort of discussions since Hamish came home, and they were carting the album around the record companies looking for a deal. I had no idea you could even do the copy control thing.
Put aside the whole ugly fast-food corporate domination thing for a second. Really, just for a minute or two. Okay - now read the linked article. Seems to me that this is the oh-my-god tipping point - when ronald mcdonald and the 'new generation' believe they can sell more junk food/drink thru free songs on iTunes - it's all about to go massively mass culture. And only 3-4 years since the glory year of napster.
I'm not saying its good or bad, it just seems like it - well - like it 'is'.
