The best band that no-one else has heard of?

...OK maybe just bands that arent on the radio, or have had the tiniest of tiny amounts of airplay...a band that doesn't get enough credit. And no voting your own bands, unless you have proof that you rule.

My 2 cents:

killswitch engage. bloody awesome metal, heavy and melodic without all the "i'm so angry" or "i like violence" b.s.

zebrahead. "playmate of the year" was a let-down after the awesomeness of "waste of mind"

something for kate. weirdish kinda pop. i actually don't think that they're great, i just thought they'd be huger than they are.

me first and the gimmie gimmies. are these guys on the radio? i confess that i don't know, but they oughta be!!

Forums: The Bar,

everyone should have known about bad brains, but noone remembers.

"Gorilla biscuits" now there is a band noone remembers, "Hold your ground" is a classic.
Btw how could anyone forget the mighty bad brains, they had such an impact on most of my favorite bands from the late 80's to early 90's.

I remember Gorilla Biscuits.

And oh how I remember Bad Brains. Those were the days.

I heard of the Bad Brains, I've actually of Earl (the drummer) playing a Timbale with the Foo Fighters which Yaylor & Dave are on seperate drum kits, pretty awesome.

//I've actually of Earl
meant to be - I've actually got a video of Earl

i remeber telling nice guy eddie he needed some bad brains in his life

One of the Bad Brains dudes (I think it's the guitarist) is now in a band with Mos Def (rapper, possibly best known to the general populace as the token black guy in the remake of The Italian Job), William Calhoun (ex-Living Colour drummer) and ... the ever awesome Bernie Worrell!! (ex-Parliament/Funkadelic keyboardist, but maybe most widely recognizable playing keys for Talking Heads in the film of 'Stop Making Sense')

The band's called The Black Jack Johnson Project. It was started as a reaction against the hip-hop/rock bands like Limp Bizkit, trying to come up with what such a fusion should really sound like. :)

Jellyfish two albums bellybutton and spiltmilk, several ep's which were unusual they came in a set of two except you had to send away for the second one. I kept the card insert that they initially had in its place. If you have a passion for melody/harmony/beatles/queen/beach boys/fender jaguar's/pop/rock/folk, you will like them. Someone stole my bellybutton album and I have ordered a replacement from real groovy. Spiltmilk was there shot at the big time and totally flopped over produced and just lacking in the kind of naive perfection that was bellybutton. Lead singer was the drummer which also made things a little tricky. A very very good cover of Jet recorded live at The Hard Rock Cafe in LA on the re-release of belly button. One of my all time favourite bands. R.I.P

I was looking thru some old videos i'd taped off TV, and came across the video for Ghost at Number 1, what a fucking great song, wicked harmonies nice structure and good strong lyrical content.

I'd always wondered what happened to them, I know that their guitarist left and ended up singing in Slash (G'n'R) band Snakepit.

don't they do "all I want is everything"? I think this chick I used to see had that album think it was thier first one, liked what I heard.

Hey puzzle any chance of getting a copy of that vid. I have every song of theirs if you want to *whisper*

Yeh disco that's off bellybutton. Your ex had taste, er..........maybe.

So much for a band that no one has heard of eh.

Hahaha she broke up with me so she must have, eh man. Jesus that was a ways back when did that shit come out '90/91?

Bellybutton was 91 I discovered it in 92 while in Nelson after bashing possums up the matai, staying with strangers, on tour with gherkin, picked up a cassette and it was jellyfish. spent 2 months trying to find a copy, finally found it in dunedin while I was staying out in mosgiel, again with strangers up on a hill. Other band members were forced to listen to it every day a minimum of two times. The night I found it I played it on repeat fell asleep to it and woke up to it, somehow it's subliminal hooks, hooked me. Sorry to hear about your break up but I'm sure shes a lot happier now.

DUDE! that fucking creepy because the girl Im talking about I met while I was in Motueka in '90-92 I shit you not.

did her first name start with a K? Was she short and very cute and spoke fluent Russian and kissed like an angel?

Yeah mister fish I can make a copy for you, it's pretty low res it was taped off TV.
I'll have to dig out the tape that it was on which may take a while, email me monkeypuzzle@paradise.net.nz and remind me, also send me your snail mail addy so I can post you the tape when it's finished.

sweet you are a legend. I'll send you a copy of my bands new ep which no one has heard and probably no one ever will, along with some jellyfish tracks that I reckon you will love.

Nope her name was Nicki (nix) but she was cute and she did kiss rather well.

KidneyThieves.

Those guys were on the bride of chucky sound track, don't ask why I know that just know that its true.

Bride of Chunky...really?. That movie had creepy doll-sex, what the hell was up wit that?!

KT are also on The Queen of the Damned Soundtrack. You can't buy their album's here :o( You have 2 go 2 the trouble of importing them from the states...Definately worth the wait tho.

// creepy doll-sex
hahahaha I haven't got a clue as to what it was all about but that would make a great name for Courney loves bio.

or Courtney loves rather.

i like the kidneythieves

Kidney Thieves are indeed good. Bass Dawwen is a fanatic.

I luuuuv them. I think they got me hook'd on work'in with a Band with a female vox - Which lead me 2 Tadpole - Which unfortunatly didn't work out - I even managed 2 leave my f**k'in KidneyThieves CD in Renèe's stereo :o( Scheisse!. . .'But Isn't it ironic, Don'tcha think?'

...I brought another copy tho :o)

// something for kate. weirdish kinda pop. i actually don't think that they're great, i just thought they'd
// be huger than they are.

They're pretty big here in Australia (their home). But maybe your summary of them explains a lot... lots of people go "yeah, they're good" rather than "I MUST HEAR THAT SONG AGAIN OR MY LIFE WILL BE MEANINGLESS!!!"

There aren't to many songs out there that are prone to making one utter such a thing. Although whenever I have thought something similar its usually some unknown/unsigned act that I happened to catch live that will be lucky to make it another 6 mths let alone out of the club scene, its all very sad.

Yeah, I thought that as I was posting: which songs make me shout like that?? I think it's a given there won't be many, I was just taking things to extremes...

One that comes to mind is the (and this is the important bit) acoustic live version of Ben Lee's "Burn to shine", I've heard it once, bought the album breathing tornado's or whatever and its a different version (that sux by comparison).
Also the first time I ever heard the Verlaines "all joed out" that song is brilliant.

Awesome Australian band Eskimo Joe, they are quite big over there but not many people here have heard them.

And my ever favourite Dramarama, so good live!

Anything anything is one of my favorite tracks ever (buck cherry's cover is schweet but it doesn't even touch the original).

Yeah we've been playing that song since the beginning of Monkey Puzzle and I've dragged it from band to band for the last 14 years, it's funny because heaps of people think it is a Monkey Puzzle song and when Buckcherry did their version people were asking us how much money we made from selling the rights.

I was lucky enough to see Dramarama play in LA about 10 years ago, they fucking rock!

we just played in Sydney with a couple of really good up and coming ozrock bands that are worth a mention, Universal-(kinda Green Day meets Incubus and Sublime). And Fingerprint Resistant (Buzz from The Melvins and Johnette from Concrete Blond have 3 bastard children and bring them up listening to nothg but Husker Du, Metallica(kill em all) and Iron Maiden)

Hahaha right on, people thought you guys were getting royalties and shit, thats funny.
Soon as Im able I fully intend to get along and see one of your shows. As for Husker du, Kill em all and Maiden thats just sound parenting right there *grin*.

roy brown- had such a cool drummer
randy alvey- was... er... strange
the db's- so obsessed with the beatles & big star- yet they still managed to be good

I want to hear about some more!

good- you've taken the 1st step- you're opening up

No I mean GOOD bands lena - not flacid alterno wannabies or awful sugar pop - that stuff will kill your brain cells. I don't have any academic ragard for music, and need nore-education from someone whose obviously worn out bored 'purist' sick of anything good, and addicted to the glucose high of the likes of p.diddy Ashanti or Avril.

shit man- write me again in 10 yrs- your blinkerizationism won't allow you to recognize GOOD bands just yet- you show all the signs of being a misguided 20-something music snob

1- you dismiss whole categories/genres on abstracts (ie sellout)- without bothering to listen for the concrete in each artist individually (ie the cardigans)

2- you assume that if a person likes 1 artist (ie avril) in a genre you dismiss- then they will like ALL artists (ie ashanti & p diddy) in that genre- cos they're all the same- ¿just like chogies all look the same?- ¿fucker?

3- you've hit 2 maybe 3 major crossroads in the path of your musical taste- you're now so zealously trodding that 1 path (¿for?) which you've (¿been?) chosen- that you q everyone elses divergence from it- you q everyone elses path- but never your own- ¿the verlaines?- ¿was there ever in the history of nz a more overrated band?

10 years from now you'll find that you don't have to stick to just 1 or 2 paths- you'll go out &- buy things you think are crap/be embarassed to admit that you ever liked som of the stuff you think is so great- now

wow i agree.

i've heard that you're a mature & refined individual- with excellent taste

yes I 've read your hypothesis on the 'musical stages' of development of youth. It's bs. Ive been into similiar sort of things for about 7 years now, and aren't embarrissed or 'over' any of it, maybe just hdu which are - like mogwai - a bit of a load of wank, but then I knew that when I listened to them first , just convinced myself that they must be good 'cause they're on Flying Nun, which was stupid. The Verlaines wrote excellent songs, have you ever had any of their albums? No, I think you just enjoy tearing down the supposed pretensions of people who would like a band like the Verlaines. Straitjacket Fits are nzs best band ever, perhaps on of the the most original and righteous guitar ever to exist,...

//you assume that if a person likes 1 artist (ie avril) in a genre you dismiss- then they will like ALL artists (ie ashanti & p diddy) in that genre- cos they're all the same-//

Yeah fair point, but how does the same boring sample blearing on and on with some homy/chick wanking on about themselves interest you? It isn't just 'not my thing', I regard it as musicaly droll, all image , no effort, no emotion, a sell and not a very good one at that. Where's the real soul of james brown, the funk of marvin gaye, or even the pop genius of early maddona or god forbid abba? Craig David is the only artist in the super synthetic pop world that I can bear and thats stretching it.

Ive been into similiar sort of things for about 7 years now- ¿makes you about mid-20's?- totally fits in with my 'theory'

The Verlaines wrote excellent songs, have you ever had any of their albums?- yes- all of them on tape- plus some of my students have given me the vinyl- & sure i won't sellem- a- cos they're presents- b- cos i dont sell vinyl anymore- but i never listen to them- ¿why?- cos they're crap- apart from the stuff on dunedin double- which is passable

¿Straitjacket Fits are nzs best band ever?- no- they totalled about 1 or 2 passable songs per release after 1st ep- still listen to 1st ep once in a while tho- good 4 songs

¿I regard it as musicaly droll, all image , no effort, no emotion, a sell and not a very good one at that?- this applies just as much to ANY category of music- including your beloved flying nun- which when viewed objectively had 2 or 3 brilliant releases- a bunch of near misses- & hundreds of mannerd wanky follow the leader would be bohes

¿real soul of james brown?- once again- shows your stage- jb is as overrated as aretha

¿Craig David?- omigod- you didnt just fall on your own sword- you fell flat on your on ass- like a fat girl who sat down too fast- straight onto an h-bomb

Ok lets make another reply in the lena o fashion.

-make a load of mass judgements without explanations, this is crap, that was ok until.. this is crap, why? because it is.
-presume to know what other people are thinking - ie you only like this 'cause your an arty alterno tosser etc, you'll grow out of it etc. - news lena - not everyone is or was like yourself.

Yous see at least I put in some effor to make myself understood here, I don't like the artists you prefer becasue of the reasons stated above... I just don't feel it pro, forget about the comm. alterno divide, the music isn't intuitive.
Blow was patchy but Melt and Hail where nigh on perfect, in that they were intuitively likeable they had emotional punch, the same for a lot of fn music - you don't have to be a 20 something high street tosser to believe that.

oooh i farken love 'Blow'. 'Melt' used to be my favourite for a while, but geeez 'Burn it up', 'Turn', 'Way', 'Train' (for god's sake, those last two are ... gasp! well i like them anyway) and of course, 'Spacing'. what an album.

//your critique is based on abstract concepts - like 'sellout' & 'commercialism'//

not entirely true, but yes context may effect my attitiude - and I think it is sometimes fair to make genralisations. Heres one - ultra mainstream music post mid-late 90's depends on songs being written that do their best not to alienate the largest proportion of the target listeners - thats always been the case to some degree but it's gotten so extreme that no exploration is taking place, theres no freedom for an artist to have an individual sound. A similiar story for rock. The singles from artist you mention, without judging them I still find them boring, is that my fault? still blikered because I don't hear what you hear in them?

Yeah the second half of Blow was pretty awesome, 'spacing's got to be one the best things they wrote...

mainstream music post mid-late 90's depends on songs being written that do their best not to alienate the largest proportion of the target listeners- that applies to all genres- all eras- but their are some auteurs always- in each genre- each era- despite that you gotta recognize that following a formula doesn't mean the formulas gonna work- sometimes- as in ronans other singles- it doesnt- yes you dont hear things the way i do- yet- but you're a music lover- & the golden rule becomes more a part of your filter system with each listening experience

Also, I enjoy any particular song more when I know that the band has also written a whole heap of other great songs. It's hard for me to pick out something I like form an artist I might otherwise hate. illogocal but I make no excuses.
