New Zealand's answer to Nick Cave, Steve played support for Ben King at the King's Arms last night. His band includes Geoff from Goldenhorse, Milan and Mike from Pluto, and usually Kirstin from Goldenhorse on BVs. His song 'Lonely I Be' - a duet with Kirstin - is pure and utter musical beauty.
Steve can usually be seen supporting Goldenhorse or Ben King ... has anyone else caught him recently?

Yeh I've seen him quite a bit this year. I love how he sings so low and then throws his head back for bloody crazy high screamy bits. That duet he does with kirsten gives me goose bumps. I've seen him play with another girl who sings a bit like kirsten she's great as well. I think that whole group of musicians are incredible, brilliant clever songs played by, well brilliant clever people. As for Ben King and his melody lines holy hubba bubba.

Steve is amazing , and Ben King is one of the best singers I've ever heard , fuck the " new rock revolution " , these guys are where it's at . Anyone notice how generic and predictable all these new garage rock bands are ? It's great to see people exited about live music again , but I want to see music that blends a range of influences from the past to make something new . It bores me to see a band who clone themselves on iggy pop and the Stooges , New York Dolls or the Velvet Underground . These bands were all marginalised by the mainstream in their time , as are the best bands of this era .
Beware of fashion at all times .

King had a better gig at the Dogs, Saturday left me thinking he should invest in a guitar tech. Mr Abel is consistently superb mind.

I was so keen for the gig on Saturday, but my friends weren't. Bummed I missed it.
The song with Kirsten is indeed awesome, but then I'm a sucker for sad songs every time.

I remember one gig at the Dogs Bollix, Steve was supporting Goldenhorse, the place was completely packed. The crowd were blabbering at full volume through Steve's set - (that old "talk through the support act cause they don't matter" thing). BUT, he started playing 'Lonely I Be' and the crowd got quieter and quieter until Steve and his superband had their full attention. Bloody powerful song - only question is, when are the general punters going to get to hear it (and the rest of Steve's material)?

P.S. By "general punters", I mean radio listeners, etc. Not just the few people who already appreciate him or those who just accidentally see him because he's supporting somneone else.
