An Open Letter To Mary Lambie, in fact the entire broacasting community:
Dear Mary,
One time me and Nat were driving up to Auckland at 5:00am. to perform on your show. I named the song “Driving To Mary” because the moment was sublime. I guess television must be a very powerful medium because, in that car, at that moment, I was truly happy. In reality I was spending $20 on petrol to be filler between “advertorials”, but in my mind I was finally a part of that shiny, happy world called “New Zealand” that had been beamed into my home since I was a child. It dawned on me later that it was just a bunch of advertisements, interrupted by over inflated egos projecting an image for consumer culture to live up to, or perhaps aspire to be. It also dawned on me that half the reason our kids want to kill themselves in such drastic numbers is that they feel isolated from a society that doesn’t even exist, apart from in your producers head! Part of the reason I was initially angry at the Yellow Ribbon Trust was that it was fronted by people like you, reflecting the crappy Baby Boomer ideals that are killing our kids in the first place.
But I got over it.
It seems to me that if I am not part of the solution then I am part of the problem and that being negative only draws from the primary issue: The Kids.
So, I guess we work together. I am prepared to offer my music, after all, it’s all I have.
On Tuesday Oct. 21st at 7 pm. I am recording vocals for a song called (Ta Daaa!) “Driving To Mary” at York St. Studios, York St. Parnell, Auckland. I invite anyone interested to go to: www.mp3.com.au/StLucy , download and learn the song and then come along at 7 to help sing it. Quality of performance is not an issue, a sense of community is. All proceeds from the sale of the song can go to The Yellow Ribbon Trust. I won the recording and CD production in a competition so (*shrug*), easy come easy go. The cause is worth it.
Are you prepared to help? If so, please spread the word. I look forward to hearing about it on the tele and seeing you on the 21st. If not then I guess you can just ignore this and carry on with your life.
Either way, the irony is brilliant.
Xxx St. Lucy
