I usually have a cup of warm water before hand to warm up the area, and wear a scarf wrapped around my neck to keep it warm.
I've heard of:
A shot of olive oil before singing
To not eat red meat for a few days before
Scales (that's the obvious one)
To eat an apple prior to performance cos the acid is gentle, but takes away the mucus from the throat
Anyone else? I'd be really interested.
Or even anything that would help it long term, not just specifically before a performance?

I was taught physical exercises they are a bit hard to explain but i'll try.
Stand about a metre away from a wall facing it
Lean forward and put your hands parallel with your shoulders against the wall
Imagine a piece of string tied to your belly button pulling you towards the wall and push towards the wall
Keep the area around your throat relaxed
Hold for about 10 seconds then relax
Do it 10 times and then move your hands further down the wall and repeat
Its based around the fact that your vocal (chords) are a muscle and need to be warmed up just like any other muscle. There's other ones but they are harder to explain, believe it or not.

They sound really interesting. I learned a lot of mouth exercises - how to relax your jaw and such. But never physical exercises. I do a bit of yoga, and i always feel better after that. Though i must say i think that keeping your body physically well must also impact on your voice too, so the whole body works together. Not sure....

Interesting theory, but i have a high register as it is, i find it hard to get stuff that's low. My range used to be f below middle c, to c 2 above octave. Now i just need to get it back there. So i really need work on my lower range.
Besides, what it does for your voice possibly, it fucks your lungs... :o)

There are lollies/lozenges that get rid of mucus and increase circulation for singers. There are some specific ones you can get from music shops and chemists, but basically Fisherman's Friend are very similar to what you can buy. I'm told they make your throat feel as if it has been singing/warming up.

Having dairy products on the day of ...
Having dairy products on the day of your performance isn't a good idea as it creates flem (mm tasty) in your throat. But having a cup of coffee or tea is ok. Vocalzones are good lozenges to give your throat lubrication before you sing, or negroids are even better, you can get these from most chemists. Humming is always the best way to begin your warm up and also breathing excercises get your diaphragm ready. Don't cough either, just swallow. I don't think smoking makes your voice higher, it would just dry up your throat and if anything make it deeper. After you've done your vocal excerises to warm up your whole range, don't talk, it gets you back into your speaking register which is different from what your singing register is. Just keep humming up and down your range going as high and as low as you can, and do a good focus before your performance :)
