Whirlwind Heat On Tour

Forums: NZ Music,

Yum, blue vinyl!
Did anyone go to the show in ChCh - what were the W Heat fellows like? I'm planning on zappin along to the Ak show this weekend...

:( I don't want to see r'n'rm again
or at least, hopefully they turn their shit down so I'm not fuckin deaf before the bands I want to see play.

i went to the wirlwind heat gig at the dux and i have to say.....
IF THIS IS WHAT IT HAS COME TO THEN I HOPE GARGE DIES A QUICK DEATH!

the were the shittist most self absorbed shite i've heard for a long time! the mint chicks were awesome but me (and a few others at the dux) only lasted four "songs"
jack white discovered himself a DOG of a band

I have to say my impression was the complete opposite in Dunedin last night. The Mint Chicks had a heap of cool riff - unfortunately they moved from one to another for no apparent reason - seven or more in one song has got to be completely over the top doesn't it? Really wonderfully technically accomplished, lots of great potential, but too much emphasis on those things and not enough on instinct. Drummer seemed to be able to play only two beats ala Green Day crossed with Shellac - the punk double beat and some sort of cool swishy dance beat (that appeared only in one song). It was like those terrorists who only learnt to take off and never to land.

However, I expect good things from them if they manage to stay together and develop. The singer was particularly talented - great range, beautiful clear tones. They just need someone to tell them not to be clever and to trust their songs to be instinctive.

Whirlwind Heat were somewhere between the total jammy instinct of supporting locals Onanon and mathematical arbitrariness of Mint Chicks. I didn't like a lot of their album, but live they lost a lot of the extraneous bells and whistles, stripped it back to something that had catchiness and swagger. Some wonderful bass sounds - who needs guitars anymore! Great great great melodic hooks (like Onanon but with more precision). I'm not sure about the lyrics - some clever word play, but some phrases that sound a little put-on in the way that Beck at his worse can sound.

Not at all self-absorbed as you say they appeared in Christchurch. Very absorbed in the flow of the music. Mint Chicks on the other hand ... may get better. Onanon I adore, but they need to practise more, though that may mean they lose their beautiful 3Ds rough diamond feel.

Great gig. Pity there were not many people - and the people who were there seemed to be on the door list. Gorgeous door guy too :X

well they did say they liked to polarize their audience. looks like mission accomplished.

the whole "no guitar" thing has potentail....if they lose their singer and get a new one.....and break THE FUCKIN' MOOG!

Who the fuck are you to judge? Fuck at least they have a cool point of difference!

Fuck you must be someone pretty fucking important to be such a patronising BITCH!!

Lexi Vexi go fuck yourself!!

Both the Mint Chicks and Whirlwind Heat went off in Welly!

Jesus! A wee bit fascist are we?

Hey Matt - what the hell is your problem? Does what I say come across to you as fact or something? It's just my opinion - I thought that was pretty obvious. Some would say an allusion to Shellac is a pretty good thing.

This is a forum Matt.
People discuss things.
Who the hell are you to tell others to go eff themselves?

And, durrrrrrrrr, matt, Lexi went to a different gig than you. Their experience may have been (wait, think about it) completely different (not the same that is) than yours.

fuck matt you were too busy drooling over Meg White.

Glad to hear the Mint Chicks were good - they are wicked and are touring with the White Stripes in Oz.....!!

The Auckland gig was amazing! Both the Mint Chicks and Whirlwind Heat (didn't see much of r n rm) were so into it (i was impressed at the rate which Whirlwind Heat drummer managed to mangle his sticks.) Did anyone else see Meg White there? she walked straight past me and I think I just about fell over.

heh, I *would've* fallen over.
and odds on I would've been drunk, so I woulda got up and then tried to hit on her :P
heh

Review and photos of teh Auckland show are up on Issue 25 of Geekboy

i had a great time the other nite at kings arms and was glad to see The Mint Chicks for the frist time!!!
and i loved Whirlwind heat!!! i wish i had money so i'd go and see them and The white stripes 2moro nite!
but i did get a Whirlwind heat T-shirt and a free badge from the nice drummer Brad!! thanx. i also got some photo's of them playing live and one great photo of The mint chicks!( but can't really see the drummer. sorry ).

It was a good night at bodega last friday, and the vinyl sure is pretty and blue!

Meg White was there and she gave me a ciggy and lit it for me too. Awwwww. now please no one go back through my posts to see how much I slag off the white stripes :)

oh my god, I missed that gig cuz I had a band practice.... and in a bizarre turn of events, we did a cover of Be My Baby (Phil Spector/the Ronettes) substituting every instance of 'baby' for 'Meg White'....
can this day get any worse?!

"be my, be my, be my meg white?" that doesn't make any sence! :)

exactly! hell, we're too poor to afford a drum kit, so our drummers keyboard's drum instrument. Lo-fi forever.

should have some more mp3s of our nonsense up soon. at present there's some 2 year old recordings on the site below

I was at the Dunedin gig and it kicked arse. All three bands playing were great, i hadn't heard anything by Onanon before, but i'd definately like to hear more from them.
I loved the Mint Chicks, they had so much energy on stage, hell i hope they come back down this way soon
Whirlwind Heat were crazy! they also had heaps of energy, jumping round like rabbits on speed and looking like they were having lots of fun

oops, i didn't quite finish that. I was just getting up to saying that i thought whirlwind heat were great, and the crowd seemed to be getting really into it too. Both the Mint Chicks and Whirlwind Heat are totally addictive, the sort of music that gets your adreneline going like you're running along on top of a train. or something. Crazy.
the 7" is great too, i think i'll have to buy whirlwind heat's album now, and i definately want to get the mint chick's ep when it comes out.
Hope Whirlwind heat come back to NZ soon. Hope the Mint Chicks come back to the south island soon. hope i get to see Onanon again soon.
Rock on! /m/

Dunedin show did kick butt, Whirlwind Heat were wonderful. Best use of the big muff distortion pedal since Mudhoney stalked the world's stages. It turns the bass into a fearsome crackling wall of gut wrenching distortion - no need for wimpy skinny string guitars no more! Break the moog? No way! MORE MOOG! MOORE! That was some truly wild synth playing. Even when they weren't playing the moog and it was only vocals drums and bass it was a huge sound. I gotta admit I wasn't crazy about the "Do rabbits Wonder" album, it had some great stand out tracks, but a lot of it I found irritating, live however it was a different story, the songs still being dementedly twisted but much more vibrant and catchy. These guys were really nice fellahs too, hope the rest of the tour went off and they got to have some fun along the way. Anyone out there see them with The White Stripes? How did that go?

it was good

Mint Chicks were the raddist live band i've seen in ages!

WHIRLWIND HEAT! I LOVE THEM! i went to their website after winning White Stripes tickets to see who their support band were and saw them @ the dux and fell in love with them and got photos and stuff. Their live show is mind-blowing and they are SO lovely!

...I saw them again with The White Stripes in Welly... who was supporting who? Stripes could just as easily have opened for WH :) They played just as amazingly at a larger venue (Wellington Town Hall). I got to meet them again briefly after an hour-long wait and Meg White also made an appearance hehe. "Do Rabbits Wonder?" is an amazing experience, i listen to it all day long... :D :D :D please come back to NZ SOON!
