nz idol

Yay!

It's finally coming to NZ, and i'm not ashamed to say, i'll be in-with-a-grin and hopin to get through.

Is there anyone else here who will go for it?

The positive side for all you negative people out there who are putting it down, if you are a musician, you could use it as a stepping stone. Think about it in this sense - if you actually want to get out and noticed, the more things you go to, the more likely you are to get recognised in future. It's all about publicity. Plus if you get through to the top 10/12, it would be an awesome experience. I dunno about you lot, but i loved being in my kapa haka group at high school - even if i was the only white one in the group often... but i loved the closeness of the group. Sorry to sound soppy, but my thoughts are that if you truely love music and the feelings you get from it, being in a group situation is an awesome feeling, feeding off the others and all of you love music. It's great.

Anyone else got any POSITIVE comments on the subject? Oh, and for some odd reason, i went to an old posting from the last nz idol topic, and to sam-flux i think it was - no, i don't make a habit of crying on camera. If i got through to the top 10 and had to watch my team-mates being eliminated, it might change cos it's like loosing a family member, and when you're under that much emotional stress, i dont' blame anyone for being upset. But i do have a bit of dignity, and for all auditions i've been to i've never cried - where's the point? It's the strong ones that will get through! :o)

Forums: NZ Music,

its funny you're the only person to say something 'POSITIVE' about it, that I know of

So true everywhere you go its like 'idol' programmes suck . . . you wanna know why? coz they do!!

go-go happy - no offence, but have you seen the stats on this programme? The amount of viewers - how many nzers tuned in for the final of american idol?

There's always going to be critics, but go to some of the positive idol sites, and you'll find it's highly popular. Give NZers a chance, hey, it's not your thing, but it is mine. And many others as well - just not to many on this site... but i think there's a lot of closet watchers.... :o)

yes but how many tuned in for australian idol?

3... but they changed channels shortly afterwards

the show is more about the ratings and the number of viwers that it brings to the tv than it is about the music, yes i dont like the style but thats not my arguement.

The show . . . should be about the music not the people! Think back to popstars. . . apart from being a complete disgrace. . . true bliss didnt last long once the show had finished, i think they lasted a couple of singles and one cd before they broke up and now the only one that i have heard about is erica and only coz shes on rtr, and that shows her divotion to music, obviously the others were only in the gig for the fame and not the joy of singing and making music which like i keep saying it should be.

To me its just another form of reality tv to keep the consumers happy and even tho thats what it is doing quite well they have their priorities all mixed up

My opinion anyway!

~~still young and innocent~~ ]

carly binding?? was she in true bliss?? If so, it was prob a kick start for her right?? hmmmm...

Carly binding was in it, and i think it's truth to what i've said for so long (though not sure if i've said it on here or not) that it's what you make of it. There are people that go to auditions for fun - good on them - but don't mistake that for real passion to make it. My passion is to sing. No one's ever going to stop me! :o) But Erica followed the TV path (nothing wrong with that, music, acting, arts - it's all quite similar) and Carly followed her music path. THe others had the same opportunities, but didn't get as far. Joe Cotton hosted M2 i think it was, and havn't heard from the other two. THe chick with braids i saw auditioned for Erica's partner on rtr, but didn't get through. And the blonde one - she could be in africa for all i know.

It's just how you use the opportunities that are given to you - and if you want it, you'll use anything you can. (aside from sleeping my way to the top - that's one thing i refuse down right to do).

//So true everywhere you go its like 'idol' programmes suck . . . you wanna know why? coz they do!!

just thought id emphasise the truth in that

yup Carly was in True Bliss but her album, even with all the hype, kinda bombed. I work in a record shop part time in a big mall and we didn't sell a copy

I confess I've grown addicted to australian idol in the last couple of weeks, and I'll be interested to see what calibre of performers NZ idol gets.

Yea, not that it's a surprise, but i'm quite glued to it too. More so actually than the american one. I think millsy's quite cute, but Levi is SO hot! :o) mmmmmm.......

But on the music side, i think they picked the final 12 quite well. I hope NZ standards are up there as well.

//But on the music side, i think they picked the final 12 quite well.

That's what I like about it - the performers are really good, and quite a diverse and interesting bunch of people. I'm not too upset about missing most of the heats (I saw the last two - God bless Courtney Act and her gorgeous sequinned ACDC number), but the finals are really absorbing and it's been really cool to get to see some of the personalities - how they're dealing with everything, the songs they choose, just watching them develop and stuff. It'll be great to see the kiwi characters though because it'll be a much more familiar dynamic.

Oh god heather it's people like you who are driving this never ending reality tv fad. Just look at what was on last night, from 7:30 to 10:00 nothing but reality shit. They make it casue it's cheap, and in NZ with only 4 channels cauch potatoes have no choice but to tolerate this crap.

Actually rdor, there's a bunch of chanels - it's called SKY TV.

But for us who can't afford sky, you're right, there is only 4 channels. My advise though is to go find a hobby, or if you're into music so much, go watch juice, or tv 4 if youdon't like what's on. Turn it off, find a video - i like watching these programmes. I'm not a fan of treasure island, but i think it's good that nz is producing stuff that's it's own - and as far as i know, nz doesn't have a huge budget for tv stuff, so reality is cheap, and we're watching ourselves.

If you don't like it, there'e normally a big button on the tv - it's called the "off button". Designed for those times when you just don't feel like wtaching what's on.

ah huh, ah huh, yes yes.

You like, aloong with a whole bunch of other teeny boppers, so the rest of us are left to either grin and bear it, or turn off. Yeah that's fair.

//Oh god heather it's people like you who are driving this never ending reality tv fad

I'm not going to try and defend my tastes. Don't mind pop idol, will watch the occasional DIY program, quite enjoy the occupation fly-on-the-wall ones. The rest I'd happily see burn; fear factor, scare tactics, funniest home videos (does that count?) anything involving cops pulling up hippies in banged-up holdens and searching them for drugs...

Maybe I am helping fuel the reality tv buzz, but if I had my way the absolute shockers would die horrible torturous ratings death, and we'd end up with just two or three reality-style shows a week. I'm sure even the intellectual elite of NZ could tolerate that. But I digress.

//That's what I like about it - the performers are really good
letting the team down mate.

//cauch potatoes have no choice but to tolerate this crap. - rdor
heh. Just spotted that - "damnit! lazy people blobbing out in front of the tv are FORCED to put up with this rubbish"

well that's right, if you want ot watch tv, often the only choice is between some cheaply made borefest or Coronation Street. Sure knowone has to watch tv, but tvnz at least has a public repsonsiblity to provide viewers with some choice. Where that damn charter when you need it?

one post only

IM FUCKEN SICK DO DEATH OF ALL THESE MADE-FOR-TV PROFIT DRIVEN TRASH. ARNT THE PEOPLE WHO "MAKE" THESE TYPES OF REALITY SHOWS AWARE THEY ARE NOTHING BUT FAKES, AND DONT GET ME STARTED ABOUT THESE STUPID ATTENTION STARVED MEDIAWHORES WHO FEATURE IN THESE TYPES OF SHOWS.

my 2 bucks.

http://www.lucifer-sam.com ]

2 cents
you idiot

not even.

all shows are made for profit?

reality tv is a way to increase profit margins.. but I'm guessing these music idol shows cost heaps to run becasue of the logistics involved.

//reality tv is a way to increase profit margins

i always knew. i mean there are otehr ways to increase profit margins without playing this corporate trash 24/7, think of Decent TV Shows ie. Malcolm in the Middle, The Simpsons even MASH Re-Runs are better than these reality TV Trash, and for the record - WHAT THE FUCK ARE UP WITH PEOPLE MY AGE with this reality TV Hype???

and heather - MY 2 BUCKS is a figure of speech, do i make myself clear???

http://www.lucifer-sam.com ]

oops sorry heather - i was saying what i said to you to Rdor.

I think you're right CK. They'er saving a little in marketing, but not by much. They still have to buy the format (probably an arm and a leg, perhaps even a small town), pay the hosts, rent the venue's, ship over or create the sets, pay film crew, make-up people, fasion people, a house (for the final 10/12 contestants), and the list goes on. Then on top of that, the person who wins (and i've heard a few others through the programme) end up with a contract. Then there's touring of the whole country, etc, etc. I'm sure they'd make a few bucks in it, otherwise they wouldn't do it, but i also think it's an expensive programme.

must agree with heather though - it would be better to have just a few reality programmes - do we really need 3 or 4 versions of doing up houses? All at the same time? If it was one after the other (series wise) cool, but all at the same time?

Cant' talk though - there's people that really liek them too.

I think you will find that most of the costs are covered by sponsorship - people jumping on the "band" wagon so to speak. People watch it, they get addicted to the characters - they buy the - geeze, i can't call them albums...er...they buy the shit.

er...blah.

It IS cheap to make. It's a good score for the company who got the rights. They will make shitloads from it and they know it. Otherwise they wouldn't bother. They are sharp business people. To suggest that they won't make much profit from this show is to suggest that they're doing it for the fun of it. Which they are not.

I agree, i'm sure they do it for commercial reasons. But i'm doing it for fun, and cos i love it... may as well use the system to my advantage... it's there....

But in saying that, do pubs have people there for the fun of it? No, probably not - cos they have to pay them, but they bring in drinkers. Same theory works all round, just in the case of NZ idol, it's really public.

And how does the winner receiving a contract cost the tv company money? It's verty naive to think that the person who wins this will be set for life. Most of the musicians I know (and I AM talking about bands/artists who have sold plenty of albums) end up owing the record company money rather than the other way round, it's the way the business works. Everything the record company pays for for the artist (flights, publicity, touring costs, etc) is taken out of the artist's cut of record sales. And the artist's cut ain't much. Take the stars out of your eyes, nzmuso.

I never said i'd be set for life - i've never claimed that. What i said was that it was a great opportunity. It's there, why not take it? If i have 15 minutes of fame, and i go for it with my all and still never get anywhere - at least i've tried. I don't care if i end up oweing them money. I have other skills, and i'm not in it for the money. It's a great experience. Look at it for what it is, the positives. Meet new people, get to sing, adn perhaps you'll get a demo out of it.

I dont' have stars in my eyes, i have a goal to sing as much as possible, and take opportunites that are presented.

no you munter - THE TERM IS '2 CENTS' not 2 bucks

i think he was trying to be different 9in a sarcastic way

NZ idol should be good.

Thanks. Are you going in it?

Nice to hear someone that likes similar stuff to me. :o)

nah, I can't sing.

I'm also too grim for the competition.

Let me ask, how many people like the BDO? how many people have followed the Rock Quest with enthusiasm? American / Australian / NZ Idol is just another forum for a different genre of music. How would you guys like it if i turned around and dissed the bands / genre's you like? There's many bands that get contracts or head on their way after Rock Quest. Anika Moa, Zed, those are just he first that come to mind.

Does anyone have a good technical rebuttle to that taht isn't personal or lame?

yep. HA HA HA!!!

Well that was the lamest answer i've come across yet. At least some of the other nzm-ers - even though they don't agree with me all the time, and i don't agree with them, at least they put up a decent arguement.

lame man, lame.....

oh shit mate sorry. thought you were trying to be humorous.
no seriously. HA HA.

er, because they don't write any of their own material. They imitate stars Whitney Houston, Maria Kerry, Craig David etc but without half the siging ability or charm (if you like that sort of thing). Who needs that? They are wannabies who with no artistsc talent of their own, and they appeal to sycophants who are fixatied on appeareces....

Well I thought it was funny ...

But the reason that there's so much hate for the various Idol shows is because unlike Rockquest etc, which is a type of music most people here like and generally takes skill to do, this stuff is for stupid pre-packaged pop - contestants sing covers most of the time, get marked on how they look, and all dumb stuff like that.

They are basically looking for another Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake and most people on this board want to kill these two people!

Oh damn rdor we made basically exactly the same post but you did it 5 minutes earlier. Oops.

I want to enter it, and i write my own stuff. I also love other music. People write beautiful songs, and i must admit, i love to sing them. I'd love to work with real song writers, it's not my forte, but i'd definitely be in helping write my own stuff, and working on stuff i already have. Sometimes it's just good for people to be able to bounce stuff off others. It's just another forum. So you sing other people's songs to get there. So you get there, then you do your own stuff (i admit thogh, i like pop, rock, r'n'b, soul, funk..... the list goes on). If nothing else, it gets you in people's minds when you start to do more stuff of your own if you don't make it through. people remember you... it's all about networking. Talent takes you a long way, but sometimes personality and the talent to network can just be the icing on the cake to get you there. Think of it this way, as opposed to people making fools of themselves, it's a chance for some of us who really want it, and have half talent, to actually have a public forum to do it in. Some of us just arn't sure where to go with our goals and how to achieve them. This is just another stepping stone

your dreaming

fuck off rdor you jealous prick.

I usually only watch the first round to these silly idol programs, since it's the funniest....

Rdor, what do you have if not dreams? I have a reality too, but i don't like it a huge amount. I much prefer to look to the future, and in my future, i'm on stage. Joining a band is cool and all, but i much prefer to do it myself. And someone has to win, so why not me? Even if i got to teh final 50 or whatever, i'm going to make contacts. All i've ever asked is that people give me a chance - just cos it's not the exact same way you guys do it, doesn't make me any less a musician.

You really can't put BDO up next to Rockquest and the "Idol" competitions because for one BDO is a totally different medium and not a competition. Even Rockquest and "Idol" differ alot. For one Idol is NOT a pure talent competition, it's a popularity contest its based on votes and what the public wants to see. It doesn't matter how good you are it seems it's more luck and being in the right place at the right time of what is the current trend in the mainstream. It's an entertaining TV admittingly but that's all it is and in reality it's only a concept about fame, popularity and making money exploiting people who hypothetically i'd say have talent of some sort to accomplish it. At least in rockquest its more of an introduction to the music industry. It's not the perfect gateway to a musical contract though it's a steping stone.
