Does anyone know anything about training dogs? My puppy keeps eating the edge of our rugs, and he is ruining them.
Also he seems to have a fascination with the heater, and he keeps walking up to it and licking the metal bars. He seems to have no sense when it comes to heat.
Any suggestions?

I dunno about house training, but take him to puppy school for general obedience. So fun, & the other dogs are so cute & then he can advance & do Tux Wonder Dog stuff.

Ok, I'm almost at my wits end. Since I posted, I pulled the rugs up so he couldn't eat them, so he crawled under the computer desk, and started chewing on the cords. Then he started eating this sort of concrete statue that my stoner uncle gave to me. I out it up high so he couldn't reach it. Now he's fucking eating the wall. I can't exactly move the wall.
I would take him to puppy school, but I'm poor. Lol. Maybe i should just beat him ....
Jokes.

squirt him with a water gun, you know super soaker styles lol. but avoid doing that when hes chewing on the cords...we dont want to hurt the poor thing :o)

i know it sounds cruel, but if hes doin bad shit - ya smack him on the nose and say/yell "NO!" at him, or pick him/her up, muzzle them with ur hand and look them straight in the eyes and yell "NO!" - if he does good shit - give him a treat. it works REALLY well - done it a couple of times with some mates with new puppies. and my friends who live on a farm in hawkes bay quite often have puppies, and thats what they do - and shit it works a treat. good times. enjoy.

Awwwwwww...lil pup!
Disagree with the hose, and smacking ideas. Had the same prob with my pup. Went to the pet store and spent $10 on chewy toys and a rope toy (which also flosses their teeth). You have to put some time aside to play with your pup, using the toys...then if he chews on your rug you can say "NO!", put the toys in front of him - play for a minute with him and soon he will know what is appropriate for him to chew and what isn't.
Never kick a dog because he's just a pup, or you better run for cover when the pup grows, up.
Try it. Good luck.

I agree with Ralphie hitting puppies is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I have a staffie and she ate everything from sunglasses to shoes to walls etc, drove me crazy.
This is the method I was taught and I promise you it works.
You will need to go to Mitre 10 and buy a small length of chain about 20cm long.
When your puppy is naughty follow this process.
Step 1/ growl in as deep a voice as you can at pup at half volume
if pup continues;
Step 2/ growl in as deep a voice as you can at pup at full volume
if pup continues;
3/ throw the chain on the ground near the pup (don't hit the pup with the chain no matter how angry!)
pup will definitely not continue
As soon as pup stops, praise pup.
My dog was taught by a romanian dog whisperer he did all her training with a ball. If your pup loves the ball you will have no problems training them to do anything.
Good luck, what sort of dog?

By the way my dog is three now and if she pisses me off all I do is point at a length of chain on the wall. She sticks her tail between her legs and gets as low to the ground as possible I can't remember the last time I actually had to throw the chain.

By the way, I wasn't serious -at all- about the beating thing. I'd never hit him.
The most important thing with training ...
The most important thing with training dogs is to be consistant, dogs learn faster if treated fairly and with love, never resort to a violent means of training or your dog will lose respect for you and you'll find it really hard work for the rest of it's life.
Reward training is a great way to teach a dog fast, give it a small treat every time it shows behaviour that you want it to continue, when it comes to chewing things one of the biggest mistakes is to give a dog any toy that has similar texture or material to other things around the house that you may not want chewed.
My dogs are allowed empty plastic drink bottles and we always have raw hide chew bones around the place, puppies need to be able to chew things for their teeth and jaws to develop properly.
It may also seem a bit stupid but all breeds are different and have different motivation for their actions, find out what breed(s) your dog is and then research a bit about them and their breed function, e.g a lot of people have Border Collies that are barkers and will act aggresivly toward strangers, the biggest cause of this is boredom, Border Collies are herding dogs and as such are also working dogs and have been bred to do just that...work, so they need to be occupied constantly or they get bored.
And if you can't afford to go to classes, go to the local library and pick up a copy of a book called The Dog Whisperer, it's a great training aid.
I own 2 dogs, one of which is a show dog, and over the years i've had several dogs and helped friends train theirs as well, the book I mentioned above is brilliant and easy to follow.

He's a Bichon Freise, and according to the book I have about them, they should be pretty easy to train. He is only about 4 months old, but I've already taught him to sit, stay, lay down, roll over, walk on his hind legs, and shake hands. He just seems to be REALLY hyperactive.
He has a rawhide bone, one of those thread type bones, he chews on plastic coke bottles with the tops off, a few tennis balls etc. I give him treats if he is good, and I've tryed the stern "No" thing, but he doesn't seem to care. It's almost like he is laughing at me haha.
I might try the chain thing next.

OK, Bichons are actually quite strong ...
OK, Bichons are actually quite strong willed dogs, and can sometimes have a Whats in it for me? attitude, when you catch him chewing something that you don't want chewed tell him off straight away but also offer an alternative, so if he's chewing the carpet (ha ha Rug Muncher) pick him up quick enough to startle him and tell him NO! then put him down away from the place he was chewing and give him one of his chew toys, he'll learn pretty quickly what is acceptable and whats not...Bichons are a Toy dog and as such they do try hard to please and want to please, but because of their ancestory they can be a bit aloof and stubborn.
Don't give up, he may seem to be ignoring you, but it is sinking in, and one day it'll jst click.
Also sometimes with male dogs of all breeds disobeying can be a subtle form of dominant behaviour, make sure your relationship to him is Owner/Dog and not the other way around, sometimes it can be too easy with a small dog to let them get away with too much and for them to think they are the boss.
I have some stuff on behavioural training I can send you if you want.

Also I forgot to say, if he's pure bred, his breeders will be able and probably only too happy to give you advice, I grew up with breeders and am starting my own kennel at the moment, a good breeder takes responsibility for a dog its whole life, remember that every dog they sell reflects their kennel and their breed, most of us don't breed dogs to make money, we do it because we love the breed of dog we have and we want to further that breed and encourage others to love them too.

awww puppies!!
Well i had a puppy but now its a dog!
When it was little it was very naughty! and cute!! awww it would chew up everything it could get its little cute paws on! First we banned it from coming in the house, then if it wouldnt listen to us we would have to say in a very serious tone NO! or BAD PUPPY! it looked at us with its eyes and it had known that it done something wrong Also we used to squirt it with a water gun because it hated water when it used to bark at the cats next door we never hit it! you should never hit your puppy! Just remember the way you train your puppy will depend on the type of characteristics it will have when its older we made a big mistake of feeding our puppy too much food when it was little so now we are stuck with a really greedy dog! who loves food! but its not fat! and its still cute awww! and how could we be mad at such a cute thing like that!!
Also you could buy yourself a "how to train a puppy"book! very helpful! and not that expensive! as sending it to training school also remember to reward it when its good by giving it biscuits or treats! ( but not too much!)
Well hoped that helped!
To stop the dog chewing the computer ...
To stop the dog chewing the computer cords pop down to the pet store and look for a repellent . . . i have a dog as well and even before we let her in the house we coated all the reachable cords with something like a bitter apple paste, totally safe but absolutly disgusting and it really works, i saw her chewing the cords once and it didnt last for long . . . i've never seen her do it again.
Its a good way to keep the puppy away from the cords and he/she will quickly learn that chewing the cords is just not worth it!!

Yeah repellants work well, bitter apple is a really good one!
also a mixture of peppermint and lavender oil sprayed on any little accidents stops them going back...hey come to think of it spray some bitter apple on the rug where the dog chews it.

when it does something wrong, give it a twap on the snozzle, when it does something right, give it a pat and a biscuit
the best training advice youll ever get
Not for all breeds, some dogs will take ...
Not for all breeds, some dogs will take to that kind of training, but for example I own an Afghan Hound, very independant and stubborn, thats what you get for 5000+ years of breeding a dog to be independant and single minded, treat training works well for them but as i've found out the hard way, a whap on the snozzle only gives you a dog with a grudge that will ignore all the training you have just given it.
Jay, I looked up a bit about the breed for you, they are a mix of Barbet Water Spanial and Standard Poodle, both of which are in the Gun Dog group when showing as is the Bichon.
Gun Dogs were bred for hunting with and were used for retrieving and flushing game.
Because they were bred to be around guns and loud noises they are very even tempered dogs, not overly barky, bichons in particular are known as fantastic and loyal companions, but one problem with them is that during the 80s they were known as one of the Yuppy Puppy breeds and were in such high demand that some unsrupulous puppy mill breeders bred them for quantity and not quality with complete disregard for genetic faults and temperament problems, because of this Bichons are proen to a few more health and temperament issues than some other breeds.
NZ breeders were not really a part of the puppy mill proccess but because the practice is so prevalent over seas often NZ breeders, despite their best efforts not to, unwittingly introduce a few undesirable traits by importing foreign blood stock.
From what you said about having alredy trained him with other commands like sit stay etc, it sounds more like a puppy issue rather than anything else.
Talk to the breeders who you bought him from and ask their advice and try the repellant idea, he'll catch on pretty quick.

The chain idea is not a bad idea, but ...
The chain idea is not a bad idea, but the important thing is not to give the dog any attention at all when its misbehaving. Shouting at it or twatting it with a newspaper is just negative attention which the dog might eventually seek from you if it felt it wasn't your sole focus. Try getting a water pistol and giving it a squirt whenever you see it doing something you want to stop. Don't let he dog see you doing it and just ignore it after giving it a quick squirt. The dog should soon associate the act of chewing something with a suprising and unpleasant sensation, and most importantly, without any attention from you - the alpha male. Never hit your dog, there is no circumstance at all where hitting a dog is any part of productive training. You will end up with a dangerous problem dog.
More on being the top dog - good training isn't enough on its own. Your dog will feel safer and more relaxed if it is sure that you are the top dog in your relationship. Always eat your dinner before you feed the dog, don't let it barge through doorways before you. You decide if it is time to play, rest eat etc. Have an area of the house that is your den, that the dog is not allowed into. Every day give it a thorough inpection, check eyes, teeth, paws and spine. This simulates the grooming that goes on in a wild pack, done by the alpha male, as well as helping you to spot any problems before they develope into big vets bills.. If you have a male dog check out its tackle as well, not pleasant, but if you can't face a few nasty chores perhaps owning a dog ain't for you. This all reassures the dog that you're the boss, and it doesn't have to make any big decisions as long as it keeps you happy. If a dog thinks it is top, it will feel the need to protect you, and may attack other dogs/people to do so. If it knows you are top it will rely on you to look after it.
Having said all that, sometimes puppies just chew, so as has been said before, make sure there are plenty of dog toys about and try not to leave it on its own for too long. a hollow dog toy wth frozen dog meat it it is a good way to occupy a dog for a longer period of time, but can be a bit messy on a carpet.
Good luck, and enjoy having it.
