Best-ever Covers

Prompted by the mass debate over poor, mis-guided lil Avril L and her attempts to improve her position in the rock pantheon I thought it might be fun for us all to nominate the best-ever covers. And for the more cynical worst ever as well (no A L covers allowed in this category, that is too easy)

Here are some to get you started:

With a little help from my friends - Joe Cocker
Knocking on Heavens door - G'n'R

Honorable mention: Kiss - Tom Jones

Forums: NZ Music,

Leningrad Cowboys and the Red Army Choir - Happy Together.

Ditto 'Sweet Home Alabama'.

* On the Road Again - Dimmer
* So Long Marianne - Straitjacket Fits
* Point That Thing Somewhere Else - HDU & Peter Gutteridge
* Mercy Seat - Johnny Cash

Who Put The Bomp - Me First & The Gimmie Gimmies
Wild World - Me First & The Gimmie Gimmies

sorry, I've been tired lately

Some of those songs aren'y by MFATGG. If you search on a p2p program, you'll find any punk cover is just assumed to be theirs, even if it's actually by MXPX, The Lunar Chicks, A New Found Glory, Fenix TX...
I know for a fact that Barbe Girl, Ghostbusters, Build Me Up Buttercup, Happy Days, I Want Candy, I, Want It That Way, Monster Mash , My Boyfriends Back, Still The One & Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
aren't MFATGG tracks at least.

But I'll agree, all MFAGG covers are wicked & most punk covers in that style are too. My fave's from their new album are Where Do Broken Hearts Go and I'll Be There.

i have to agree with you Tama

also i dig The ataris cover of "the boys of summer" they did it waaay better than that DJ Sammy dude

// The ataris cover of "the boys of summer"

no way! that cover is so bland.

I like it

god damn Kazaa!! I hate it when people put the wrong bands on the mp3s!!

The ataris cover isn't particuarly good. Especially since I'd already heard a similar but lesser known band cover it. And that band did a much better job.

what?? DJ Sammy ?? :P

I like all the punk covers also Tama..... ; )

Nah, it was a band called Codeseven.

I don't think they mean to Tama, it's just they think "this song is a punk cover, it must be by MFATGG". Very annoying eh.

Hit Me Baby One More Time - Travis
I Stole Your Love - Buck Jones
Jealous Guy - Pluto (live at Bodega)

pluto are a fucking great covers band - hey hang on

I love their cover of 'Jealous Guy'. They've taken to playing it every encore, which is fabulous and makes me very happy and it also makes me teary.

i like their covers of the weight and in the lap of the gods. man they add so much to those songs.

the weight when the 67-part harmony comes in...phwoar. they do it so well!

Helll yes Jelous Guy is one great cover. It gropes my heart each time I hear it.

Everything off Abbasolutely, but specially Shayne Carter & Fiona McDonald - Name of the Game and Bressa Creeting Cake - Ring Ring

Hurt - Johnny Cash
Rusty Cage - Johnny Cash
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm
Blue Monday - Orgy
Stone Cold Crazy - MetallicA
Turn the Page - MetallicA
Whiskey In The Jar - MetallicA
Baker Street - Foo Fighters
Have A Cigar - Foo Fighters
Fire - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Pepper
Land Down Under - Pennywise

fuck!! I did it again!!! I think I need to go to bed soon!!

baker street and have a cigar are such great covers by the foo fighters........but i suppose i would say that

whiskey is the jar is a wicked cover...

I was also going to nominate everything off abbasolutely, but you beat me too it. My favs are Supertrouper/Headless Chickens, and On and On and On/The Tall Dwarfs.

Yup, those are my other favourites off that album, but I didn't want to get too carried away, a la tama drummer.

hmmmm..........

Ack! Pseudo Echo - Funky Town! Yeah!

Dear god. Do you mean to tell me funky town was a cover?

Ummm...Are you serious? Am I really that old?

// Am I really that old?

I think you only have a couple of years on me actually, but er the Pseudo Echo version is very indelibly ingrained on my memory. One of my friends had just got a ghetto blaster and that was his first tape. We used to sit on the grass and listen to pseudo echo and fly kites.

I was suprised to learn it was a cover too. My older sisters (one of whom is just a year younger than you, Heather) used to refer to Psuedoecho as "Spunky Town"

When I was in college, there was a band of young miscreants that played the local bar circuit, called Mr. Belvedere and the Solid Gold Dancers. They were a cover band (they refused to be called a tribute band), playing only 80's hair metal. Every cover they did was divine.

Said it before, say it again
"crush" - The Dismemberment Plan, not your cute little pop song anymore.
"The Coffee Song" - Soul Coughing

Narley Mouskouri-Hit me with your rhythm stick

riders on the storm - creed
lover man - metallica
raining blood - concord dawn
paranoid - just one fix
shout 2000 - disturbed
genie in a bottle - (dat punk rock band))
no quaters - TOOL

//riders on the storm - creed//

So the rumbling in Paris was Jim Morrison rolling in his grave ... not the metro!

// genie in a bottle - (dat punk rock band))

that song is awful! i'd have to say i like the original better...

//riders on the storm - creed//

WHAT THE FUCK???? CREED ARE SO GAY. EVEN JOSHUA KADISON AND LIONEL RITCHIE SOUND HEAVIER THAN THEM.

//genie in a bottle - (dat punk rock band))

Just when u thought that peice of junk was over - along it comes with a more horrible verison. and calling them 'punk' is an insult to a genre that isnt meant to be writing songs about love and romance.

dude you choice the the worst covers

// lover man - metallica
Grrrr.

How dare YOU!!! WHy i oughta!!!

CONCORD DAWN'S dance version of raining blood is so much better than the original!!!

Yeah, Raining Blood is a pretty cool trac in the Uprising. I'm not too partial to drum'n'bass or metal but the hybrid of the two is a thing of beauty.

kitten you should be shot in the face for nominating that genie in the bottle cover.
It wasn't thrice, I don't know who the fuck it was but they should be hanged for covering such an atrocious "song"(and even though its in quotations i shudder to use the term song) and dirtying up punk even moreso.
I still can't quite recover from the fact that you called it one of the "best ever covers". Oh well.
Your tastes are rather shocking, aren't they?

//genie in a bottle - (dat punk rock band))//

the thrice one?

that's hot.. just because i love thrice.. punk covers rock up crap songs.. even tif the covers arent' good at least they're fucken better than the originals.
