Should Bands Continue With A Different Singer??

I reckon they shouldn't, because it completely changes the style & over all sound of the band. If they do they should change their name & wright new songs, like Audioslave & hopefully Velvet Revolver will do.

It worked with AC/DC & Van Halen, but not very well with others like Black Sabbath & Iron Maiden. you hardly ever heard anything from these bands when Ozzy & Bruce weren't in them.
I remember rumors that George Micheal was going to be the new singer of Queen!! now that would be sad

Forums: NZ Music,

At least his gay.....

Yeah, I guess in most circumstances you're right, depending on what the man focus of the band is. In Both the case of AC/DC and Van Halen it was the guitarist's band (you just need to look at the AC/DC album covers to work that out :) When Bon Scott died they neatly replaced him with the nearest replica they could find, but if Angus Young had died the band would have been over.

The only mainstream band I can think of that had similar levels of recognition with two different singers is Genesis.

Do i even need to mention the great rock band that got signifigantly bigger almost the moment they changed singers? (coughfnmcough) :)

as for George Michael.... shit, there'll never be another mercury, and thank god no-one tries :) Michael did do at least one big gig with the musicians of queen as a sort of freddy tribute. It sucked bad.

Man, I've heard that track with George Michael on their third Greatest Hits album, and it's a heck of a lot better than the one on the same cd with Elton John! Now there's an idea to keep you awake at night ... Queen and Elton John ...

what about bands continuing on with just the singer?

Ben Fold?

Are you refering to the whole Axel is G'n'R thing? It has to be stopped man G'n'R will never be again until Axel and your namesake share a stage again (hope, hope).
Until then man its Velvet Revolver all the way.

The singer of 'Days Of The New' did that as well (I think)

Nothing personal but who gives a fuck about 'Days of the new'?.

reading something slash said "GnR is bigger than all of us"
let it be

//Nothing personal but who gives a fuck about 'Days of the new'?.

not me

I totally concur.

INXS without Michael Hutchence, ugh.
And Audioslave is nothing compared to RATM.

Dude, RATM is no more! Its not like they replaced Zach with Cornell. Audioslave is a completely different band than either RATM or (the mighty) Sound garden.
As far as bands changing lead singers AC/DC is the only band to pull it off in my opinion, although that one kid that came out from behind his drum kit to front that one band did a pretty good Job I must admit.

I think INXS it's great with their new singer. He actually sings almost like Michael.
Tight!!! tan tarara ran!

what about...

* faith no more (Chuck Mosley -> Mike Patton)
* fleetwood mac (Jeremy Spencer/Peter Green -> Christine McVie/Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham)
* my bloody valentine (Dave Conway -> Kevin Shields/Bilinda Butcher)
* king crimson (changed vocalists on nearly every album)

In nearly all of those cases, changing singers was the catalyst that propelled the band to greater success.

//* faith no more (Chuck Mosley -> Mike Patton)

don't forget Courtney Love

courtney love - i still have my theory on how she killed kurt. maybe it's true, no one really knows.......

man i should really go back to sleep....

And in response to the question - i don't think bands should continue with a different singer. it justs doesn't sound the same. sure you could change the drummer or guitarist but it's not like that will effect how the band sounds......the singer is the main part of the band, without him/her their nothing

don't forget pink floyd

//......the singer is the main part of the band, without him/her their nothing
Fool!

Oh how wrong you are. Maybe in some forms of music the singer is the most important thing (Linkin Park, shitty pop, etc,) but in the stuff that I enjoy and/or respect each member supplies a part, each of which is important. Some of the best bands in the world don't have singers at all. Silly person. Broaden your horizons. Your comment makes me fear for your immortal soul.

yeah you're right. what was i thinking. i guess sleep deprivation is finally getting to me!

:)

sould bands continue with cournteny love???

hell no!!!!!

// don't forget Courtney Love //

courtney love was a friend of roddy bottum's which is the only way she got the gig, she was never a permanent member, didn't write anything with / for them, and predated chuck mosely, i believe they had only recently changed name from faith no man, so really if you're bringing courtney up, you should also bring up mike "the man" morris, joe pye, paul frazer, etc, oh and look, a quote from billy gould himself:

----------------------------------------------------------------
Courtney was in the band for roughly a year. Billy explains why she didn't stay: "She's got to lead and tell people what's what. She was the dictator, and in our band things were democratic."..."At that time she couldn't sing too well, and she had a lot of personal problems, so she had to leave the band."
----------------------------------------------------------------

On the note of courtney Love, i just saw a pic of kurt's head after it's been blown to bits, god damn!!! What head?!!!

it took you 10 years to see that?

yep, someone's using it as their messenger pic

// sure you could change the drummer or guitarist but it's not like that will effect how the band sounds //

well actually, you couldn't be more wrong, faith no more, again, is an excellent example.

jim martin - 80's hair heavy metal influence, some industrial
trey spruance - fucked up jazzy hard rock
jon hudson - hard rock, mate

you're an idiot if you think that the musicians that make up a band of musicians who write music together with the other musicians in the band don't affect the music

I think Drowning Pool should find a new singer and continue because they wrote wicked music togeather and itd be a waste of talent if they fully broke up..

how exactly did dave williams die? i never found out...

he couldn't handle his drugs stupid fuck.

i immediately thought of faith no more for this comment.. but then, chuck mosley didn't die or anything, they kicked him out to find somebody better.. bit of a difference..

external link ]

they kicked him out because of his drug problems, and attitude problem

so yeah in a way it was to find someone better :)

Black Sabbath went down down down when Dio Replaced Ozzy in 1978, Dont think much of Heavan and Hell as much as The Ozzy Era Albums, ok its a good album but Dio doesnt really fit in to Sabbath like Ozzy did - know what im sayin?

i like black sabbath betta with Dio, i reakon Dio's a much betta singer than ozzy, and the song heaven and hell is just awesome, havent heard much of the album tho, i heard it aint as repeatitive

Are you honestly trying to suggest that Genesis wasn't the same after they replaced Peter Gabriel with Phil Collins ....

http://ack ]

Phil really should have stayed behind the drums

Joy Division+Ian Curits say "see ya"=New Order =yay!

see them at the BDO? :D

i thought i would never live to see the day to be honest, and then i did! i was prettttty stoked

Some bands play such boring music, but their terrific, passionate singer saves their music from the bin. Sometimes it's the opposite.

What about recording contracts- sometimes a label legally can force you to keep your name going, even after all the original members have been replaced...

its all about the money $$$$

Tadpole?

// It worked with AC/DC

It didn't matter with ACDC, both singers suck(ed) the music however is a different story.

Bon Scott was alright

dirty deeds and highway to hell are mean but so is back in black and if you really want to mess i had jailbreak 74' when i was 15

bon scott was more than alright man. i still laugh my fucking head off when i listen to some acdc lyrics. they are probably the coolest band ever. if you have seen them live you will know what i mean.

Hey did they play Mt Smart twice or is there some truth to all that anti drug propaganda?

the lead guy of Hot Hot Heat was changed to steve bays and i reckon it was for the better. yeah sure, they changed their style in music, but in all honestly it sounded a hell of a lot better. just check out some of their old stuff like on the 'scenes one through thirteen' album when it still had the former lead vox and compare it to their more recent album, 'make up the breakdown'.

ofcorse they should, mak'n music!

whatever
