Which particular flavour of islam are you talking about? There are a whole bunch of denominations, and plenty of them have some seriously conflicting ideas regarding tolerance.

LS - it was a rhetorical question. My original point was that there are plenty of moslem factions that could never be described as tolerant...and saying "it's not true Islam" is not only extremely simplistic, but could be considered insulting - like you're imposing your own narrow-minded views on how other people choose to practice their religion.
The word "Jihad" means struggle, or to be specific, striving in the cause of God. Any struggle done in day-to-day life to please God can be considered Jihad. ie...
"I've got to go on a Jihad to tidy up my lawn for this weekend's prayer meeting."
So, from that, you can cast your net pretty wide with regards to what does and doesn't fall under the jihad umbrella. One form which is obviously very much in the public eye is the idea of 'Holy War', which can either be the call to take up arms in defense of Islam or a Muslim country when Islam is attacked, or, in a more 'pro-active' form, an effort to expand the territories ruled by Muslims at the expense of territories ruled by non-Muslims.
There's a whole bunch of differing definitions and comments from different scholars here...
