I can't believe all the channels are still buying those fucking awful american sitecom shows to NZ tv. Do we really want to know that being stupid and fat is the best way of life?! Frankly, i wouldn't mind at all if all the programs got replaced by british imports, their comedies are at least funny.

Dude, there are some really shitty comedies that come out of Britain. It's just that because they're so shitty they don't usually end up being bought by any of the TV channels here, so we don't see them.
Having said there, there's this deliciously fucked-up comedy show called "Bo Selecta" that I saw a few times in the UK. The comedy probably wouldn't translate to NZ, because a lot of it is based on British celebrities and culture, but it makes me wish for something like that to be shown here.

Yeah, that what both of my American friends say - they left, and a lot of American outside of America are apparently more selfaware etc, but they put it down to the fact that the news media inside America is very very very local and doesn't talk about the outside at all.

A kiwi friend went to the States (ummm - San Fransisco I think) and he reckoned people were really amazed that he'd even consider leaving his home country. Apparently the overseas experience is Just Not Done - unnecessary, unpredictable, dangerous, and people who want to travel are viewed with something akin to suspicion - like a bit of a loose cannon. My friend reckoned middle culture strongly encourages getting a nice office job, buying a house and settling down. From those observations, I imagine that americans who do leave the states (or at least are intending to travel) probably are inclined to be more independent and open-minded, and less swayed by convention.

If you are going to judge America then come over here and live here for more than 6 mths (Ive been here about 7yrs) and then see if you still hold the same view of Americans. Most of my friends hate the way their nation is portrayed to the rest of the world but what can they do ? They have as much control over their government as you do over yours.
