Salford Lads Club

This is the general discussion forum for Salford Lads Club

Forums: Bands,

I think the vocalist for the Salford Lads Club has one of the better voices going in NZ's music scene today. Is he in a band that does original material? It seems a waste to simply use those pipes for a tribute band. The Smiths are truely one of the greats though, and NZ is fortunate to have a group who does justice to their music. Keep up the good work boyz!

There is more to life than a tribute band. All members have other creative aspirations...

The closest I've come to seeing the Smiths live was when Johnny Marr did a couple of Smithes songs when he played at Neil Finn's Seven Worlds Collide extravaganza. That was great, but it wasn't the real thing.

Obviously the Salford Lads Club isn't the real thing either, but having listened to a couple of mp3s of them doing some Smifs songs, I think I'd really like to see them live. Oh, I do hope they come to Auckland soon!

(By the way, when I was in Manchester earlier this year, I was considering visiting the Salford Lads Club and the cemet(a)ry gates for a photo opportunity, but I wussed out (Manchester, strange new scary city, OMG!). I got a pictire of a street sign pointing to Strangeways, though!)

I see they have a christmas gig coming up in Wellington soon, I'm sooo there (if I can afford it...)

Looking foward to catching SLC when they're up in auckland... think I might avoid the London shed gig tho... too many people from Howick, even though I'm from there ;-)

I think you should come to both!

I dont think the people we went to school with will know who The Smiths are rusty one, they were too busy listening to Boys II Men and 5ive. We are more likely to run into some of our teachers....

I picked Howick because I wanted to make the front page of the How/pak times. Last time I did that I was 9.

I find they have a fetish for really bad metal. I copped a drunken 45 minute long lecture about how great creed were at the last howick party I went to... the dude (i won't name names) wouldn't leave me alone about them as soon as he found out I was doing music at uni... really weird.

Can you guys do 'Death at One's Elbow?'

No, sorry. At present we have a repertoire of about 45 songs which I expect will include many of your favourites.

I forget - is there a line about doing covers in Paint a Vulgar Picture?

No,hang on. Didn't the Smiths do a few covers too? Can't remember which ones though, other than His Latest Flame.

Although Vulgar Picture does do a good job of describing Moz post-Smiths.

Hey thanks to all you shy little charmers that made it out of your bedrooms for the christchurch and dunedin shows. The Lads appreciated the flowers and the dancing and promise to recharge themselves with cups of tea before their auckland and hamilton shows this weekend..

Can I put in a request for Reel Around the Fountain for the Auckland show?

I'd prefer seeing the real Smiths. No offense to the SLC.

No shit!

I would rather be in the real Smiths.

When are you guys coming back down to Christchurch? I know its only been..well..almost a week but..but..Are you going to make me come to Wellington and stalk you all? C'mooon don't deprive me.

PS nice fro Rob.

I saw the Auckland show at Galatos on Sunday. It was so much fun!

At first I was a little nervous about being a sad old lady going to see a tribute band, but then I noticed there were sadder, older people there, so I pushed my way to the front and ended up gleefully jumping around amid sweaty guys.

I demand that the Lads return to Auckland in the near future. A friend of mine missed out and now he has locked himself in his room and is writing frightening verse to you know what.

P.S. The Morrissey was brilliant and both the Johnnies were totally hawt.

For photos of the "hawt" Johnnies and other members of the SLC check out:

BTW Robyn your not the only one - I overheard some girl behind me on friday night commenting on how "hawt" Johnny was. Im not sure which one she was referring to but I told them both none the less.

Hey I was one of those "sad" "older" people there. If anything the turnout is reflective on the impact and the importance that the Smiths had on many people growing up. And still. Morrissey remains the one true pop star who isn't afraid to speak his mine. Whether it be about the current music scene or animal rights.

The Salford Lads club were great both nights in Auckland. The won over the crowd. Hearing songs such as "The Queen Is Dead" you realise that no other band has really come close to writing anything as original and as powerful as this. Radiohead perhaps, before their own heads went up their bottoms.

I really do hope the 'lads come back up to Auckland later in the year. Judging by how full Galatos was, I'm sure that it'll be the same the next time they play here. Lets hope more people bring flowers along. The crowd was the nicest I've encountered at a gig for a long long time, especially those two girls who were at both the London Shed and Galatos.

Radiohead's heads are fine right where they are, thank you very much.

Thanks for your comments guys - we will definately be back in Auckland soon. You people are way too nice.

It has been a long time coming, but The Salford Lads' Club are finally dusting off the Gladioli to bring a Smiths Tribute show to each Auckland and Wellington. Preparations are going well and we are very much looking foward to uniting the New Zealand Smiths Contingent again.

The shows are:

Saturday April 30th - Galatos, Auckland - Tickets from Cosmic Corner -
Doors 8pm

Saturday May 7th - Indigo, Wellington - Tickets from Cosmic Corner -
Doors 8pm

These will be our last ever shows together as the Salford Lads' Club. The reason for this is that we are finding ourselves unable to distinguish between our nominated Smiths personas and our real personalities. Obviously this has serious implications for us all (except Adrian) and our unloved ones, so we must sadly fare thee well.

Be sure to check out the updated website, which features a superb new poster design by honorary Lad Dylan Mercer.

See you soon!

Whee! Hooray!

Salford Lads’ Club are rather chuffed to announce two extra shows in their final tribute to The Smiths.

The declaration of the Salford Lads Club's final Smiths Tribute performances has caused a furore comparable to little else but the death of the Mother Theresa; maybe even that of Lady Di.

These outpourings of emotion have resulted in the scheduling of two extra dates...

In Auckland, the Lads now play Fri 29th April at Galatos, in addition to the Sat 30th.

In Wellington, adding to the Saturday night gig at Indigo, the band will play an earlier show on the Sunday 8th May entitled “Some Mothers Days Are Bigger Than Others”

People are urged to bring flowers to these last shows, and also, whenever possible, their mothers. Indeed, a generous offer has been provided on the Sunday gig of free entry to the first 100 mums accompanying their offspring, and able to prove their relationship.

These will be the very last shows of many mad celebrations over the last couple of years, before the group finally heads off to ‘Strangeways’ for a tea drinking sabbatical.

Remember to bring flowers!

So, Goodbye…

Barbarism begins at Valve! We are playing a low key show there on Wednesday 27 April, entry $5. We may be lucky enough to have support from Hot Swiss Mistress, but this isn't confirmed yet. Fingers crossed..

A very late response. Thanks very much for the two Auckland shows in late April. I enjoyed both nights very much. Contrasting nights, but as always at a Salford Lad's Club gig the nicest people turn up. So now that's it's all over can we expect the Morrissey solo experience?

Thanks for everything. I shall hold fond memories of all four times that I saw the band play.
