Booker Prize Shortlist announced.

The shortlisted authors and their novels:

Monica Ali - Brick Lane
Margaret Atwood - Oryx And Crake
Clare Morrall - Astonishing Splashes Of Colour
Zoe Heller - Notes On A Scandal
Damon Galgut - The Good Doctor
DBC Pierre - Vernon God Little

Brick Lane was a pretty obvious choice. I'm upset to see that J.M. Coetzee's new novel, Elizabeth Costello, didn't make it. I thought he'd have been a shoe-in. Other oldies longlisted included Graham Swift (author of Last Orders) and Martin Amis - but the only really established author who made it to the final six was Atwood.

Forums: The Bar,

coetzee rocks. isn't he the only person to win the booker prize twice?

He was until 1999. In 2001, Peter Carey won his second Booker for The True History Of The Kelly Gang (his first was for Oscar and Lucinda).

Coetzee is a genius. His novel Disgrace is one of the best I have ever read.

I was going to say I put about as much stock in the Booker Prize as I do the Oscars, but that's not quite true... I will investigate the books shortlisted. Perhaps all I want to say is that I think awards are silly when they're rewarding something so subjective, faddish and irrational as creative endeavours.

And yeah, I liked 'Disgrace' as well. I read 'Youth' more recently and didn't like that much at all. Unsympathetic protagonist taken way too far. Reminded me of reading Joyce. :P :P

Disgrace was trash. Self indulgent middle aged fantasies. Incoherent, boring. I hate that author.

Different strokes for different folks...
