Scenes from the South Island ... what an album. a friend of a friend owned it on vinyl ... my god it was fantastic. i managed to find it somewhere on CD - not the best way to hear it, but it's all i've got to live with.

someone else please rave about this musician.

my favourite of Scenes is the Nor'Wester song. goddamn - reminded me of growing up on Canterbury plains, ions in the air from the wind, going crazy in the December warmth, running on cut grass. kinda ... but the song sounds more like you're zooming with it over the hills at a million miles an hour. but you can still make out every rock, every critter, every detail.

¿is this the guy with the guitar & the effects?- if it is- ¿are you fucking nuts?

hope im wrong here

Mark Williams from Wellington band Marineville interviewed him a year or two back for webzine Perfect Sound Forever. I like process-focused interviews... no mystical malarky. :)

I actually don't know much of his stuff at all. For some reason I always merge him in my head with Bruce Russell and the Corpus Hermeticum bods.. I guess it's location, vintage, etc. but I'm not even sure if there are connections beyond that.

excellent textural guitarist, really proficient at creating emotive tracks that conjure up certain scenes (hence the 'scenes from the south island' album). also you can't forget his past in the pin group - one of nz's great lost post-punk bands.. rumour is they could be reuniting this year.. check out his solo album 'allegory of hearing' of hearing if you can. galaxy down here in chch has pretty much all his albums.

+ he was in a band called Dissolve, who i'm listening to a lot these days. on his own he's good, but new dimensions occur with the band behind him. terrific textured beat-driven mutating-developing-riff-centric tunes.
