why keep the moratorium in place? (and how do you spell it anyway?)
GE is like radiation innit? we all use microwave ovens and i'm pretty sure no one would dispute the use of x-rays, but we all hate nuclear power and atomic bombs... same with GE. it has it's good uses and bad ones. simply putting off the use of it isn't really helping anything. is it?
check the article in today's dom post on that scandanavian 'enviromental sceptic', it's quite enlightening.
Hmm. I went and saw the scientists who ...
Hmm. I went and saw the scientists who testified at the Crown inquiry (or whatever)into GM speak. People who had lost their jobs and been persecuted because their research - some of the very little research done into the effects of GM foods on living organisms and the ecosystem - showed some pretty alarming things that the massively wealthy biotech industry didn't want to know - said industry funds a lot of r&d at universities...bad scientists! Like, the internal organs of rats fed GM potatos vs rats fed normal potatos. If you had seen the pictures of that you wouldn't touch a GM potato. Like, if you create a tomato with built in pesticide to kill insects, you may want to check just how different our internal organ lining is from the insect's. To say nothing of terminator seeds etc. There is an economic underpinning to abandoning safety regulations, and a concerted propaganda campaign (see Sharon Beder's Global Spin if you want to know how the environmental propaganda war is going).
As to Bjorn Lomborg and his book skeptical environmentalist (what I presume you are referring to - I don't read the dom post). I've read the book and could shoot down big chunks based on my limited specialisation. A cursory web search will reveal him being critically handed his ass by many environmental/scientific bodies, including the WRI, the WWF, and Scientific American, etc. ACtually, the mainstream media love him, but we won't comment on how about the only book claiming everything is under control, written by a statistician commenting on many scientific disciplines he doesn't understand, makes big news all around the world, while say, the UN consistently freaking out more and more each year with their environmental pronouncements get more or less ignored, and the onslaught of frantic scientists producing well researched books about how fucked we are likewise get a gentle pat on the back before obscurity. Nothing to do with the convergence in ownership between say biotech and mass media.
Was that coherent? Oh well. I'll crawl back in my hole now.
why do anything then? why not just eat ...
why do anything then?
why not just eat fast food for the rest of our lives?
because: we as humans we have choices, we can choose what to eat, choose who to give our money to and choose when we die. but is it right for us to make decisions for people 50 or 100 years in the future?
another two years maybe time enough for something horific to go wrong in other countries, thus we still have a choice here.
plus who is making money out of it - GE as every other corporation entity and science is the exploitation of us worker ants, for the greater selfish benifit of the few elite wankers.
all this and more...
we (dark tower) have been refused radio play and mp3 hosting because we have just released a track 'ACROSS THE FIELDS' which contains part of the infamous John Campbell vs Helen Clark, plus Sean Plunket vs Marion Hobbs, GE CORN interviews.
but we finally found a site to host it:
http://www.musicianmp3.com/search_details.cfm?adinfoid=1908
some of the lyrics:
you'ld think they'ld make an effort to govern us better
and know better than to cover up a cover up letter
just another marionette under the masters thumb
expendable members are always rendered half as dumb
remember back door pay has more sway than a vote or say
unless you bond together a million strong and fight your way
but they want you to think there's too much efforts in doin' this
cos youre a bunch of thumb sucking apathetic disillusionists
you'd think they couldnt squash her cos she's granite to the core
while you're sitting back to watch it - i can't stand it any more
there's no time to plan it or panic when she roars
why couldnt the rich be thor and save the planet for the poor?
instead of standing over - and jamming every door.
my finger's pointing now- and blaming every whore
whoever sold out thier mum. today's the same on every shore,
now i'm cold out and numb and it's raining to the core.
i blame you even more, shame you for gaining more!
it's like no matter who you vote for it's the same as it was before
it's a fucking game - we're stuck in a game for ever more
fields are grey from dismay i can't take it any more
you can trick us into thinking it benefits the small guy
but what you want is to be richer - just before we all die!
but you cant fool me - cos im a child of the revolution.
G.E's been around for years - in form of greed and exploitation,
they're secretly scattering hybrid seed to the next location
but you cant fool me anymore - I'm entitled to resolution.

every year there's enough food grown ...
every year there's enough food grown to feed the entire population of the planet 3 times over- ¿why don't the ethiopìans &c get any of the surplus?- er... it comes down to simple economics- the corporate giants that make billions distributing this stuff globally prefer not to deliver unless money is involved- it's the only feel good factor they're interested in
¿healthier crops?- ¿what lies have you been believing?- when a scientist says 'we BELIEVE that we can produce healthier crops' (& to say anything more than that would- at this point in time- be grossly dishonest)- it's just a theory- it's still only their belief- only 3 letters away from a lie
// it comes down to simple economics- ...
// it comes down to simple economics- the corporate giants that make billions distributing this stuff globally prefer not to deliver unless money is involved- it's the only feel good factor they're interested in
Hmm, even if they did it still comes down to simple economics. You supply a nation with food, they become reliant on the supplier. A nation needs to be self-reliant.
// and who says GE is actually ...
// and who says GE is actually bad
Think of the tobacco industry. Oh smoking is cool, nothing wrong with it. Years later people develop cancer proven to be related to smoking. We cannot safely predict the outcome of tampering with food. You change an attribute of a plant, you change the ecosystem that surrounds it.
ok- a nation needs to be self reliant- ...
ok- a nation needs to be self reliant- so you supply them with seeds & teach them how to store a certain % to plant for the next year- ¿why the fuck is monsanto so hell bent on developing crops that DON'T reproduce- & distributing those throughout the 3rd world?- total wankmeisters
//better haverst? more nutritous food ...
//better haverst? more nutritous food //
how do we really know that by altering the food we're making it more nutrious
we as a society do not know enough to say this as a fact
remember during the vietnam war how agent orange was described as "a harmless defoliant"???
well there are a lot of vets now who were sprayed by it who have above normal mutations and general fuck-ups of their body
i don't know the figures but there is an abundance of food already, the amount of food farmers in the US destroy to keep up the price of food in the market is crazy
//how do we really know that by ...
//how do we really know that by altering the food we're making it more nutrious
While it is certainly possible that GE could lead to less nutritious or outright poisonous strains of plants, this also happens with either planned breeding programs, or random mutations in nature. That's not neccessarily a pro-GE argument, but natural things can also be poisonous.
yep - good debate, but i think there ...
yep - good debate, but i think there are a few devils advocates here.
basically if you were given two identical looking apples,
one was ge altered so it would last longer on the shelf, sprayed with untold pesticides and fungicides - then covered with a chemically reproduced wax.
the other - grown naturally/normally, without chemical interferance.
which one would you choose?
of course anybody in their right mind would choose the latter -
we are basically animals that think more than the rest, and just like every other living thing we are depenant on the earth to produce our food, it's the way it has been and the way it will always be -
but when you fuck up the thing that is keeping us alive - the soil, the water, the plants, it is obvious that we are gonna get fucked up in due course.
is there a chance we can wind back the clock of the damage already done?
we can try?
Whoa, hold up a second: "basically ...
Whoa, hold up a second:
"basically if you were given two identical looking apples,
one was ge altered so it would last longer on the shelf, sprayed with untold pesticides and fungicides - then covered with a chemically reproduced wax.
the other - grown naturally/normally, without chemical interferance."
What? The whole reason biotech companies want to modify fruits and other produce is to remove the need for for such pesticides/fungicides/chemical interference etc. It is the "naturally grown" apple that is more likely, nay -garuanteed- to have been sprayed by god-knows-what to keep pests at bay.
In a real world situation your choice is going to look more like this:
a) an apple that has been geneticaly modified.
b) an apple that is a natural genetic copy of it's forebears, but which has been chemically treated.
Now the choice is getting a little bit harder to make. But, hark! enter the "organic food market"!
Now you can have yourself a third choice, c) an apple that is grown without any GM -or- chemical interferrence! Surely THIS is the apple for ME!!!!
Nup, wrong. Tests have shown that fruits left to their own devices will produce their own toxins, their own pesticides. This may sound like the fruits are just stupid seeing it's an apple's purpose to be eaten and the seeds to be spread in an animal's shit, but that only works when it's a large mammal doing the apple-eating, not when it's a plague of wasps or something. The level/intesity of these naturally produced toxins are pretty minimal, but the belief is that exposure over time is pretty much identical to that you'd get eating fruits that have been sprayed/treated with man-made pesticides. Aw Crap :(
So, let us look at our choice in apples:
a) genetical modified, no chemical treatments.
b) no GM, but sprayed with pesticides.
c) "organic", with higher levels of natural toxins.
conclusion: apples B and C can be proven to be harmful, apple A is safe in theory. "in theory" though, and this theory is yet to be properly tested in real world situations, so it's anyone's guess.
in closing; fuck apples.

The main thing I'm worried about with ...
The main thing I'm worried about with GE is how it affects the environment- does it really taint the soil it's grown in? Does this mean that once it's OK'd, NZ won't be able to claim to have ANY pure organically produce? Maybe? Cause that's a hugely, earthshakingly important 'maybe!' I don't even buy organic stuff, but I know this is a bad thing.
They're going ahead with this in our name, people, they're our elected representatives. We've got to send them a message!

I'm with you grimmy. How cool would it be if we could eat a couple of apples that gave us that cool glow-in-the-dark type skin (just for the night, but) that you see the occasional lab-rat sporting? Be a total winner of a move for the weekend dance party.
And as for those bananas that vaccinate you against various diseases, bring 'em on.

the medical applications of GE are ...
the medical applications of GE are many, varied and for the most part pretty good for humanity as a whole... it's the stupid ones motivated by greed that'll fuck it all up.
the nightmare scenario i heard at a seminar once was growers genetically altering something like strawberries so they were resistant to dew settling on their leaves and turning into frost... those altered molecules then evaporated (not sure how) and eventually prevented clouds forming in the skies and, well i think you get the picture. as much as well all dislike rain i think the world would be a bit boring without clouds... not to mention utterly uninhabitable for any and all organic life...
super salmon was another one... yikes! they walk! they talk! they're SUPER SALMON!

ooo, reminds of Vonnegut's sci-fi invention: Ice-9
Ice-9 is a form of water that freezes at room temperature. By its nature, if it gets loose from the test tube, it will spread -- to puddles, to ponds, to rivers and finally oceans, until all the water on the planet is locked up in crystalline form.
Same sorts of theories were espoused when they let off the first atomic bomb: would the chain reaction ever stop?

Speaking as a scientist (albeit a mad one)...I have to say it really pisses me off when clearly a large chunk of the arguements against GE (including many of the above) are essentially not about GE at all, but against captialism. Please people - recognise the enemy. I am not the enemy.
I believe in GE. I believe that in the hands of underpriveledged(sp?) nations this could be a great tool for raising the standard of living and quality of life in many ways. But, funnily enough in the hands of big multinationals - like so many other things (eg oil, medicines, pesticides) - it can really suck.
Banning GE is not going to stop big business from fucking up the world - I dont think it would even slow it down.
