i think most people probably have an opinion either way, so if you're against GE, filling out the form on this site is a easy thing to do. then you could ask a few other people to fill it out as well.
the server seems a bit overloaded at the moment, so if you can't connect, maybe try later on.

I've lost faith in our government keeping out GE, well considering they never were going to keep it out, so I never had faith in them.
I just don't see a point to it, food seems fine the way it is, why mess with it.
GE shouldn't be abolished!!! meat ...
GE shouldn't be abolished!!! meat flavoured vegtables :)

The thing which sways me most is that NZ is a series of islands. It is not yet clear whether the rest of the world is going to be pro-GE or not, but we have an ability to stay GE free in a way many other countries can't. Regardless of what you might think about GE in the lab, it seems really silly to grow GE plants outside. And certainly silly just to grow GE food so that you can spray more Roundup on it so that Monsatano can make more money.
I agree, let the rest of the world work ...
I agree, let the rest of the world work out the problems with it, maybe it will be all sweet, then with the millions saved in research we can get into it.
I think new zealanders need to be more informed of what the government is doing and take more action... more tractors on the steps of the beehive! (well big public actions at least)
the problem i have with this fight is ...
the problem i have with this fight is that people are getting hyped up by greenpeace and the media about GE food and crops, but in the process they're demonizing legitimate medical research.
there are thousands of genetic conditions that affect people all around the world, some of these conditions can be serious, some not so serious, but who are you to decide whether or not little timmy the haemophiliac or little jenny with von willebrands disorder gets a second chance of life?
think about it people, you see the letters GE and you think "cloning, dangerous food, mice with human ears, blah blah blah" you don't think "cures for hereditary cancer, hereditary heart conditions, hereditary mental illness, hereditary diseases"
do not confuse GE food with GE medicine, they are different things entirely ... even greenpeace is making only a light distinction between the two, the only mention of GE for medicine on its website is as follows:
"While scientific progress on molecular biology has a great potential to increase our understanding of nature and provide new medical tools, it should not be used as justification to turn the environment into a giant genetic experiment."
this is fair, but don't turn the tables and hurt genuine research, let us have the chance to have access to those medical tools
think about what you sign, there are more issues surrounding this topic than you probably realise, don't just sit back and believe the propoganda they're feeding you, research both sides of the argument so you can make an informed decision
on that note i'm clarifying my position - i agree that GE crops should be kept in the lab, that we shouldn't be meddling with things we don't yet understand fully and releasing it into the environment, but i am a full advocate of research, so that we may eventually understand the implications surrounding this issue
it's also on that note that i'll stop my rant and mention that extending the moratorium will not affect legitimate research - as stated on the take5 site:
"3 - Extending the GE moratorium by 5 years will not stop NZ scientists developing medicines to improve human health."
so sweet as! go for it, vote - just for christs sake, if you want to have an opinion on this, keep informed and think about WHO you're fighting against, don't chuck medical scientists in the same basket as commercial scumbags looking for ways to make more money

Nice points. I think that we shouldn't shut out all chances of having GE in medicine here. There's alot that could be done, saving or improving many lives in the mean time.
Who are we to say that we can't use GE in medicine? I myself have a condition they think will only have a proper cure in 50 or so years. With GE though they believe they can move in leaps and bounds towards good treatments and a possible cure.

ahh actually, the Green Party and Greenpeace are not opposed to medical research, hence the "keep it in the lab" slogan.

i'm aware of this, however information is not exactly spurting out in regards to this. i've come across plenty of people who assume that it's all in the same league. the distinction is not made clear so people assume that all GE is bad. i'm not attacking anyone, i'm saying "keep informed" because propoganda comes in all forms, intentional or not, and there are many that hold the view that GE research should be abolished outright, thanks to the association.

oh and it *was* a rant, rants are usually full of opinion, it just happens to be something i feel very strongly about :)
when i say "demonizing" i am referring to public perception rather than actual governmental policy

ill say this once and only one - for 76 too long years mine and 1/4 million new zealanders Drug of Choice has been illegal - and for once ill have to berate norml for not taking a more aggressive role to help cannabis be legalised (too few smoke-ins, land occupations, mass marches etc) - Cannabis Law Reform before GE.
You can also vote to extend the ...
You can also vote to extend the moratorium by 5 years by texting your name and suburb or town to 8642.
The moratorium means that the Environmental Risk Management Authority cannot accept applications for release of genetically modified organsims into our environment (until this moratorium expires at the end of October). Of course, it would still be at least a few years before any GMO's are on our supermarket shelves etc, but is this really enough time to conduct the proper research required? I'm not necessarily against GM but caution it strongly and I want to know that enough, reliable research has been conducted before these GMO's are released into my country. So plz spend 5 seconds and vote on this!

GM food is here already. It is just not grown in New Zealand. A lot of cheeses contain random GM stuff, and pretty much anything with soy products in it will be. For a more detailed list and links see below.

I mean as in fresh fruit/vege produce etc. There's a list of approved foods which may contain some GMO's but at a certain low level like a small as percent. And yea you're right its from overseas countrys NOT NZ, and the soy thing, apparently in the US 70% of all soy products have had some genetic modification. Don't u think it's a little early for that high a % to be GM? Thing is with crops, it's pretty hard to undo what's been altered if cross-contimination between GM crops and non-GM crops occurs, u have to destroy all the crops affected which is gona cost the poor farmers whose non-GM crop has been affected a load of money. I just don't believe our country (let alone other countries) has had a reasonal amount of time to research into control of these GMO's and that at least a few more yrs should assist that if anything. Once it's done, u can't go back.

oops, i didnt see this thread before i started the other.
but i'd like to add,
science, technology and medicine seem to want to correct the problems made by science, technology and medicine.
and you can't keep on correcting - that just snowballs the initial problem, plus creates new problems.
reverse is the only way to life.
