Anime, Perjury Wgtn Rockquest Semi's

fuck these two bands were good they both deserve so much to get into the finals, i don't want to give my prefrence, cause it might seem like one band deserves it more than another...

Anime, Perjury and 5th Element 7/9

Arriving at the Indigo Bar, I saw that it was cluttered with all the pieces of technology required for audio and visual recording, this gig was looking pretty serious!!!
Talking with people in the “know” it was revealed Michael Welsford himself was there with a 24-track recorder and with instructions to record and mix recordings by all three bands that afternoon.

5th Element started up, their four singers started off a bit rough, with off-notes blaringly obvious, the twenty or so people at the front seemed pretty bored. With their rapping, barely understandable 5th Element took awhile to really get into gear and when they did, they did. 5th Element were big on vocal harmonies, with the instrument side, in a decidedly supporting role. With the vocals becoming more clearer and understandable, the crowd began to enjoy them more. Clad in matching hoodies 5th Element had a nice groove going, finishing off by calling out at the crowd “This is Wellington aye??? I thought yous was hard!!!” they left the stage for waiting taxis to take them back to Auckland.

Perjury were up next, with some real loud guitar, I could tell from the first note, this was the best I’d seen them, obviously having more practise time under their belt, they were much better than when I saw them a few weeks ago. The lead singer had moments where he looked as if he was caught in the headlights of a car, but Perjury managed to hide that with some wild screams and a huge full sound.
A tiny crowd was going hard for Perjury, but it reminded me of last year’s Rockquest Semi-Finals, where a poor crowd turnout dampend the gig, maybe the organisers might want to advertise this gig a bit more to get the punters in, as the two Wellington bands seemed to think it was an open event.
Pulling the moves and facials to go, Perjury really took a step up with their powerful performance and delivered a strong push for a place in the Rockquest finals.

Anime took the stage and quickly broke a bass string, with some impromptu jamming and some banter with the crowd, the time went by. With the bassist sporting a new string and looking rather embarrassed, Anime took the stage with a “WOAH!!!” the drummer thrashed away at the back with such skill and precision, while at the front the two guitarists delivered powerful twin screams. With the bass thudding and Anime dancing around the stage, they were wild. When it was spotted that the lead guitarist was wearing a red-bull t-shirt (a no-no at a coke sponsored event) Anime took the stage again, with a repeat of their previous song, for extra video and audio recording, the crowd was in a frenzy, suddenly two crazy Bogan/Metal-heads jumped on stage and started jumping around and air-guitaring with the band, what a show!!!
After the second take, Anime preformed one more, continuing to go hard and absolutely ROCK, having finished their last take, the lead singer slumped down with exhaustion.

take anime and perjury seriously, cause they rock!!!

Good to hear the welly semis went well i was hoping they would, south island semis went off aswell about 350 croud and 5 great bands(sommerset and housewives included ) but as for the competing bands i have no doubts that falter are gonna take it all out and starlet were really good (and hot) but u didnt hear that from me.Monkey Puzzler played well busting out new songs all over the show and of course having the home croud advantage ruled with our ussual rent a croud right behind us.

Yes Falter did have that whole X factor thing going on, and the mere fact that I found Monkey Puzzler more interesting musicaly and the range of thier style impressive must be a sure sign that they will not get throu... as i am hardly the demographic aimed of by RQ..
Question how where the songs for fliming picked... as i did think that both monkey puzzler and starlet picked songs that were not their strongest....

It also suprises me that they picked a weeken in the middle of exams... would explain low turn out in both places... and the lack of advertising was shocking... postered finally went up here on thursday.

yo, thanks for the mean props man, i dont quite know what to say..........but in answer to your question, we thought we should play one of our more 'radio friendly' songs, in order to appeal to the more commercial aspect that rouckquest seems to be taking on in this stage of the competition. also, we wanted to play it safe and go with a song that we could play with our eyes closed to be sure of not sucking. the song we played, Drinking Beer, was one of the first songs we ever wrote so we decided to go with that. had some of our newer material been as well practiced as that song, we wouyld have played them also, but the fact that they were only a week or two old and not yet at their tightest was sadly not a risk we were willing to take.

also, though i can't speak for wellington, i know that the semi venue in nelson (The Hub) has a people limit of 400 (i have definitely seen more people in there than that before i.e. che fu, but its a fire safety issue and i guess rockquest didnt want to take any risks) and that almost that number showed up on the night. from the moment we found out we were in, we told anyone who would listen, and glenn and pete had told me that due to the limit on people in the hub, they werent going to overpublicise it. seeing as we ended up with about 400 people coming in the door, i think they got it about right.

amen to that. brother.

That shirt sure did help
hey doom tree.. see the reply to post thingie... just a hint for beginers :)

Well done :D

Hey guys what is happening in the hood cheers for the props aka yea i suppose i like some of our other songs better than drinking beer but i dont get what u mean by wont get through ??? please explain anyway Peace

Shit Jessie, I'm just blowing air... don't pay any attention to me... the comment was more self-deprecation than aimed at your band.... a "what the hell would I know from cheese"
so you have like 6 chances out of 9... they are bloody good odds
Nice webbie site btw.. I had always thought Sven was part of cynaps .. in last years RQ... oh well.. see I don't know everything :)

well i was, but then jesse came up to me and said "oi, you're gonna be in my band" so that was pretty much the end of it. sweet as, catch you later

It's not in the bio.

yeah, theres a lot of stuff thats not on our website but should be - will be seeing to that one exams are out of the way

Staying off line will help with that ! :D

yeah, but i learn more on here than i do at school ayway heh heh.

Congrats Anime & Perjury, good on you guys for makin it!

Jamie, on behalf of Baby Massif - good luck

Sure it does why not

http://www.monkeypuzzler.tk ]

yup cope, you've started how many topic with Anime, Perjury in the topic jj.......... it's all balance mate :P

rozi from starlet here,
nice to c u think were hot jesse, even beta u liked our music.

Aka -
im upset - you send we didnt play our strongest song, what went wrong? Wat other song went beta.

The wellington final was the day after the nelson semi, and i was up there.
Im fuked off, this forum has made me really jelous as i spent the majority of sat nite sitting on my arse. And jonny Toogood was there n every thing! yet i did c him that day in the street. i almost wet my pants, but i think thats more than u needed 2 no from me 2nite, im going to bed.

I didn't take comprehensive notes that night, as I was not planning to do a full review, so I haven't got song titles.
I was left with the impression of really good vocals and strong harmonies from Starlet, and in my one persons opinion I just preferred the songs in the middle of your set.

much appreciated. ironically the ones in the middle were there because we didnt think they were as good. i trust in your good opinion

// i trust in your good opinion
oh god please don't, your opinion count's much more... seriously.

i know
thank u 4 reminding me
in my lack of judgement i may have changed the song order
