Fashion Mistakes of the 80's

This coming Saturday night at Valve in Wellington Acid Jack, The Yes Men and Disasteradio are pulling out some nu nu-wave synthesiser rock beats and I dont know what to wear!

After polishing up on some of my robotic dancing I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of how I could dress tragically 80's for the night?
Also what CD's do you recommend I put on between bands?

Forums: NZ Music,

Go for the Maddona "Material Girl" look. Ribbons in the hair, and the lacy glove. Can't forget about those leg-warmers.

And the Karate-Shoes... They were the shit.

Bubble Skirts were all the go in the early 80's and teased out hair ... and lots and lots of garish eye-shadow. Or you could go the Annie Lennox "adrogynous" look ... Or the Cyndi Lauper "op shop" chic ... whatever the 80's were crap for fashion ... bring back the 70's woohoo!!!

I can't believe you let go of your chocolate brown suit with 42 inch flares Stu. Thats criminal.

It would have been worth a bloody fortune in the right sort of shop ... and I could threaten to wear it whenever I was not getting my own way!!! And they were 24" flares ... but who's measuring?

OMG, bubble skirts were sooo not early '80s. They were, like mid-late '80s.

Slick your hair back with wet-look gel into a tight bun at the back of your head, but swish your fringe up a la Cameron Diaz in "There's Something About Mary". Big earrings complete the look.

Also, hold onto your bad taste '80s gear, because this shit is so coming right back into fashion.

ratshit... i was born late eightes

//OMG, bubble skirts were sooo not early '80s. They were, like mid-late '80s.//

I know my memory is going (it's an age thing, ya know) but I distinctly remember bubble skirts in the UK in the early 80's ...

I also remember some disgusting grey shoes that I had ... with zips!!!

Also big in the early 80's, for the ladies at least, was the Princess Di look .... demure little frocks in blue ... and blazer type jackets ... but I don't know if you would really wear that to anywhere except a garden party!

Mens fashio was crap ... boring ... and the miami vice look was no good for skinny little white boys like me ... specially if you drove a cortina!

A quick hoon around Google suggests that bubble skirts were at their peak in 1987, but that varients on the bubble skirt have been around since the late '60s.

I owned a bubble skirt! Then again I was like 7 or 8 years old.. blame my mum.

Recommended CDs

ABC - Lexicon of Love.
Some OMD
Dexy's Midnight Runners (unless you want the punters to stick around)
Duran squared
Yazoo - Upstairs at Erics (except the boys ruined my tape, "accidentally" I'm sure!)

hah.. I'll burn a lil' somethin somethin, don't you worry.

I want you LIVE!!!

My first proper gig was in the late eighties, I bought myself a flourescent pink Kramer electric guitar and went clothes shopping with my Mum for an outfit, pink singlet to match the guitar, white jacket with shoulder pads, brand new sparkling pair of acid wash black jeans and pointy shoes. Oh lovely. I wish I had a photo for those days when you feel like laughing at yourself. Wicked.

The shoulder pads were so important. Did the jacket have really skinny lapels??

Oh man, go the shoulder pads! How big was your hair?

yep it was the Don Johnson number. I occasionally wore it with my ultra skinny leather tie and t-shirt. It was quite versatile you could really dress it up, you know.

Miami Nights is the theme... shit I hope someone turns up looking like Don Johnson - boy would that make my night! I think Acid Jack are all wearing Ray Ban's when they play.....

hmmmm good old raybans. who said we didnt wear them all the time?

ive got several pairs of all different sizes and shapes....

Aviators for me :)

The hair was huge shaved very high and then stuck up with home made gel, two table spoons of gelatine and water then blow dried for extra shine.

in the 80's China didn't have any cool fashion sense... maybe i could wear one of em ppl's libeartion army's uniform.

I don't think that was limited only to china. the seventies stuff has come back around with retro being cool but you try wearing that shit above and walking around town. You'd have people urinating on your feet.

I reckon the 80s is coming back quite happily. It's never going to be quite the same as last time, but your average Justin Timberlake or Kylie video has a whole lot of 80s-ness going on. And as for Danii... yeesh. Last vid of hers I saw she had the one lacy glove and did the whole turn-the-hand-dryer-upside-down thing a la 'Desperately Seeking Susan'.

Then there's J-Lo's flashdance rip-off vid, 'Footloose' is being remade next year, and a sequel to 'Dirty Dancing' has just been finished.

In fact it's all over pop music... heard Mariah Carey's cover of 'I Didn't Mean To Turn You On'?? It's more 80s than the Robert Palmer track! :|

I guess what's being thrashed in pop land is more the 80s US black look than yr Frank Flash impersonation. ;)

aaaaand there's "electro-clash" (Fischerspooner et al - in fact they did a good performance on Top of the Pops with Kylie), the 80s synth disco revivalism of acts like Metro Area, the new wave punky dancey whatever-as-long-as-its-80s efforts by Trevor Jackson (Playgroup) and his croneys, and even the decidedly 80s mopeyness that is Interpol.

Most of this stuff is riffing on late 70s / early 80s... maybe retro will keep slowly sliding forward so it's consistently cool to pick up on fashions of 20-25 years ago?

Who shot J.R...?

Who killed Laura Palmer?

hah.. guess whose pic I have above the computer.. I am such a sad, sad fanboy.

.. and today I read that kyle mclachlan did voice credits in GTA3 ! crazy. After I completed it I mean.

Where is D.B. Cooper ?

Europe. The final countdown.

i got heaps of 80's records- email me

My vote would have to be for flat top mullets, denim everything, combat boots (or mocasins, depending on how dressy the joint is) and a black heavy metal t-shirt. Huttcore!

I could turn up on Saturday night and kick in the wimpy 80s synth fags with my steel cap boots.... Niceguyeddie, bringing Hutt justice to the big city.

The first solo gig I did I wore a 'Number of the Beast' T-shirt, supplied by a certain vocalist from a certain band called Idle Faction. :)

I'm most likely gonna have to source an old metal shirt from him... maybe the tie-died Iron Maiden one...

Billy is a good source of metal and associated clothing, that is for sure.

I would combine my pakaru looking Iron Maiden, 'The Trooper' t-shirt with a Michael Jackson look-a-like 'Thriller' jacket, but instead of it being red...all black. And I would bring my pretend mulleted girlfriend out wear her oversized Queen 'four face's teeshirt, with leopard skin tights, sucking back on Lion Red bottle necks.....here love pass us one of ya Pall Mall menthols.....

Huttcore

dats the beast of them all.

no one can beat the huttcore. and the cool thing is that its still the fashoin in upperhutt...

only thing those hutt hicks are missing is a pitchfork or two....

what ever happened to your one nice guy?

Can someone hand out some flyers in the Hutt?

Sorry L, im glad to say i dont actually live there anymore. Ive seen some posters in town tho, when did they or will they go up? Plus our pdf file was bung, so if you wanna go put up a poster in Paris Texas, and leave some flyers - theyll oblige (i work there you see)....

Let me take you back to 1987...
Bop, baggy pants, with skellerup velcrone shoes (an colour).....cotton sweat top, and boofy hair, and really thick on the sides... and kung fu shoes were still the shit.

Ive heard a rumour that "Flames" Fowler from The Yes Men is wearing a blue vinyl jacket with unfashionably short sleeves....

Im digging the lace glove Said in Jest!
How about some dance moves - what should I brush up on?

maybe i should dress up as Ted

80's Dance moves?! Yeah man, do the "Running Man" and the "Roger Rabbit" they were best. The Moonwalk is alright but pretty stupid, you'll walk up and say "Hey wanna dance?" *moonwalks* "SeeYa later."

Don't bother, nobody could dance in the 80's (except M J)

You havent seen me do a caterpillar roll yet....or my robotic dancing. I am hunting down Michael Jackson "Bad" on CD as I write - they copy I own is on cassette tape!

Went and looked at the website of the Electroclash festival, which happened in New York last year and is on again this year. If you want some scary examples of the 80s being back, check out their site. The gallery I've linked to below is particularly scary.
