Pop school

Hey all,

Considering going to Uni for 3 years to do a BA in pop music and everything to do with it. I figure after years of not being at school (i'm 22, left school at 17 and didn't do uni) and wanting to do music and procrastinating, that if nothing else it would be a great way to have to work on my music every day. I do love it, but i also put it off far to much!

Does anyone have any thoughts on the pop music course at auckland uni or any other thoughts and idea's on the matter?

Forums: The Bar,

stay WELL AWAY FROM pop music mate, its for your own good.

id suggest starting up your own stoner rock/metal school way better

Thanks, but though i like rock and metal etc, i really need some focus, and i'm wondering if school would give it to me. I'm one of the weird nuts that actually enjoy's being at school! Plus i figure good way to get a demo made etc... i like pop. i'm one of those anoying bouncy people that get's high off chocolate....

the "rock" degree course down here in Dunedin is format friendly to most/all genres. they are churning out a heap of bands who are actually putting theory into practise too. i haven't seen many solo people come from it yet though ... but it might be worth checking out ....

Now THAT would be worth seeing - "Yeah, I have a BMus in Metal". Nice.

im a north islander so dont mock my lack of geographil knowledge, but are you refering to the degree offered by Otago uni?because i have heard really good things about it, and am seriously considering doing it after high school, that and adventure tourism... but whats it like???

Thanks a bunch. I havn't been down to Dunedin, perhaps it's worth checking out. THe bonus of auckland is that i have a good job lined up that i could possibly do weird hours for, so that's a bonus in my world. But thanks, i'll have a look on the site.

:o)

Seems me and Sam need to abduct and brain wash ya until u finally realised the errors of ur ways and denounce POP!!!! GGGRRR

Again, you're so cute... can i take you home? :o)

Do the degree in Rock music down in otago uni (im still considering it!) I think it is a much better choice than Pop music!!! Well thats just only my opinion.

TOP POP is unbelievable.... "the cheeky girls".... i mean, what the fuck?!! I guess americans aren't the dumbest in the world, the poms are!

Ur so cute kittenslayer... can i take you home? :o)

Well my real name is Tracy, do you think that is an ok name to call myself if i do end up doing this? And i love all aspects of music from clasical to pop to heavy metal. I guess i prefer pop cos that's what my voice is suited to. that and musicals - i have a lot of power for a small person.... it seems to be a good course, and also covers marketing yourself, who to approach and how to go about getting to what ever goal you seem to have.... i think they meant "popular" music, as opposed to "lollypop" music. So it would include almost any genre i think.... what happens dear slayer if you come acrros a really cool chick you like and god-forbid... she likes pop music?

//it is a much better choice than Pop music!

they do all genres. rock and pop. and whatever falls inbetween. it's actually called "Contemporary Music", but the media darlings love to refer to it as the "Rock Degree" which is very misleading, obviously.

here is what you learn in pop school.

8am - DG101: learn to digitally alter your voice so yous sound like a robot in need of ritalin
10am - PD100: Learn how to convince your producer to write all the songs for you
11am - tea and biccies break
11.15am - PD100
12pm: lunch break, includes free peppermint tea
1pm: IMG200: learn how to look like one of those pop slappers/batty boys who perform pop songs (no offence there nz_muzo)
2pm: hometime
6pm night class starts with SF210: learning how to make "music" with a cheap peice of software (avaliable at all tricky dicky stores for $90)
8pm: hometime end of clases for today, see u all tomorrow.

You forgot "cock-sucking 101"....

yes, i do understand it's kinda pathetic to want to go to "pop school" but in saying that they also cover marketing (i'm a big fan of this) legalities of music, etc, etc. You could say that i could find a lot of this outside of work hours - i just wonder if i have the time - also, who do you trust?

I think i like your time table... hmmm... cup of tea time.... are you a tutor there?

Oh, and no offense taken on the whole "slappa" thing... i get called that regularly... it's just like water off a ducks back....

errrrmmm...nz muzo that post was a joke - but if there where any sense in it, those exact topics would be taught at pop school

It's ok, i knew it was a joke... i just think the concept is still quite funny myself, and with all the "selling out" topics and stuff - i also think there's a standing joke of "wonder how he/she got to where she is"... and thus the blow job joke.... sorry, might have been a little overboard.... just trying to lighten things up.....

:o)

Whatever you do, don't do the music course at the SIT in Invers!!
They'll try & get rid of your style & creativity, then you won't feel like playing music again!!
Most people there sound like clones of their tutors,.
I passed, but I didn't learn shit!! I shouldn't have passed

thanks, i'll keep that in mind. It's good to hear from other students. What did they teach you there?

the question should be what didn't they teach us there

below link is what it was.
Except I did the cert course, which is the same as the first year

http://www.sit.ac.nz/diplomamusic3.pdf ]

So then why was the course so bad? You sound almost like it was the worst thing to happen to you. Did you get anything out of it?

//Most people there sound like clones of their tutors

i can't think of any band out of the Otago course that sounds at any point, in any way, like the Verlaines. goddamit, i wish they would.

nzmuso, u should try to sing like Carly Bindings, Beck runga or that fraser chick's style, cuz datz just cliched and annoying, u should try to sing like Amy Lee (sweet as a angel... oh my AMy Lee...) I wish i have more time and more paitence to practice my voice, how i wanted to sing like Maynard :)

i took that course as well. its terrible. they basically encourage you to drop your creativity and become a brainwashed wanker who plays in a covers band.

Hate to say it kittenslayer, i'm a carly binding fan. I think she's done well for herself. But why dont' you like her? I sing anything - i like stuff like snake river conspiracy, but i dunno if i have the voice for it...

And i dont' mind covers. song writing is not my forte, so you ahve to start somewhere. For me copying someone is a good way to challenge my voice in a practical use. Teach it to do new things.

//Did you get anything out of it?

the only thing I liked about that course is meeting some cool new people & jamming with them (until they stop us), also I learnt some cool thing on drums & got better on the guitar.
But there was a lot of shit that was going down that ruined the course, created by some weirdo aussie women who in the end got fired from her job.

Doesn't sound very good. Seems the best you can get out of these courses is a bit more knowledge,a dn some contacts. Mind you, i'm not looking to use it like a "stars in their eyes" walk-through-doors-walk-out-looking-like-pop-star kind fo thing. Just somewhere to meet like minded people.

// created by some weirdo aussie women who in the end got fired from her job.

don't forget the part about her stealing a student away from his parents and taking him to a different country (true story).

and they live in a camper van just out of sydney

i can't believe u don't who Amy Lee is nzmuso!!! She's the chick from evanescence! She got the best voice ever!

I am doing popmus102. I really enjoy it. Far better than the maths/compsci degree I am doing now. I am going to change into that degree next year.

It is not a course to learn about being a pop star. It seems to focus more on the industry and technology.

Thanks!

That's exactly what i wanted to know. Can you tell me anymore about it?

the auckland university music students looks happy enough.... maybe they have freedom?

Yay, ur back on! Where did you go?

i was deleted, and i've also noticed that certain topics are locked from me. I can't post in em, it's racism i tell ya!

don't play the racism card here please

Seems to me that much of the positive side to these sorts of courses is less to do with the things you get tought and more to do with the contacts you make while studying.I dont have any first hand experience, but I know a guy who wound up working with king kapisi through a contact he made at his course.I dont know the contact details, but its called excell performing arts and its based somewhere in new lynn out here in west auckland.Ive heard alot of good stuff about it.
