Stolen Gear.

I was tidying out my office today and found some photos of gear that was stolen 3 years ago, a custom hand made arch top by Golini ($5500), a Gibson Les Paul Studio customiized with Velvet Hammer pickups($3375) my JCM 800 and 2x12 cab ($3500) and assorted other items, none of which was ever found and with a grand total of nearly $15 000 all taken from a "secure" lock-up and all uninsured (didn't read the fine print on the lock-up contract).

Anyway it got me wondering, why do people do it, and sadly the only answer is because there's money to be made from it, which means that someone is buying it, and even more sad and annoying it must be musicians who are buying the stolen gear and helping to make the stolen equipment market a viable one.

Think about how you'd feel losing thousands of dollars of hard earned gear (for me it represented 10 years of hard work)before you buy anything that may be stolen.

I also thought maybe there are a hundred more stories of stolen gear just as sad and frustrating as mine, so who else has been in the same boat, and what was it that got taken...who knows, no matter how long it's been, maybe mentioning it may bring a response after all someone had to buy it, so that means someone out there has seen it, and if you're lucky another NZM member might be able to give you lead, and at the very least you'll be helping to discourage the trade of stolen gear (even if only to a very minor degree).

Forums: NZ Music,

Bugger the borders cut that figure in a bad place it should read
$15 000.

U guys should hunt em down and cut their dick off!!! Chinese style!!!

YOU TIDYED UR OFFICE??!!!

I know a guy who had his gat ($5000) and other bits and musical bobs stolen from his house...he reported it to the police and LUCKILY they found his gat (described in detail) in a music store up in Whangerei...If any music gear of yous is stolen notify the police, and music stores/chains (not ness in your area - he lived in orks.)asap. Yep - it sucks that people steal shit - you can only do so much to get it back...

wasn't one of the guys from monkey puzzle livin in a flat in brooklyn during 2000... didn't they practice in the same room my stuff was stored in.... and didn't my chorus pedal go missing during that time???
hhmmm .. i hope i'm wrong.. but if i'm right i believe someone in this band got a dose of Karma.

Our old drummer Ryan lived in a flat in Brooklyn, I have a vague memory that you may have lent us an amp to practice with one day, in fact it was the only day that we ever practiced there because my flanger and tuner disappeared from that same flat that day, and I always thought that some one who lived there had stolen it.

By the way, if it was someone from MP that took your pedal, wouldn't the Karma have hit them, instead I lost a pedal and tuner at your house and then a few months later all the rest of my gear...how is this Karma?

hey monkey puzzle.... i never lived in that flat but stored my stuff there for about a week.... it sucks to hear you got your shit nabbed too...
i assumed it was the people that were there that i didnt know and that HAD used my gear..
i did say "i hope im wrong" ... soo if it wasn't any of you guys then cool .. but i knew evryone else there and so this is now oh soo dodgey..

Yeah it really sucks when someone takes advantage of a trusting person, Ryser new a few musos who came and went and i'm sure there must have been quite a few other musos who came and went, not to mention non-musos, horrible to assume that it may have been another musician.

Come to think of it, didn't that flat get broken into, I seem to remeber Ryan saying that they had and all his stuff and his girlfriends stuff got taken.

BTW sidebar to teh above discussion. from your logon name can I assume that you are part of the infamous GLAM band of the same name? if so can I just say, YOU ROCK!!! fly the flag and fly it well.

yep monkey puzzle you would be guessing right.. LIPPY FIXX indeed... thanks man !! if ya want a couple of pixx flick us yer e-mail..

yeah bro keen as, I miss the old days when bands were worth seeing and a show was a show!

monkeypuzzle@paradise.net.nz

when and where are you guys playing next?

indeed... when a show was a show...
Well the FIXX would love to do a tour of AK, WGTN, DUN, CHCH.. but since each show generally costs around $1000 and we have alot of excess staging and shit.. money and venue size are huge factors... plans are floating though and maybe something will happen next year...

I cant say that I had five thousand bucks worth stolen, but I can say that Xmas morning last year, I went outside to my bomb of a car, and some fucker/s had smashed into it to steal the pretty modest guitar amp that I had on the backseat. Yeah,i know it's stupid to leave shit visible in yr car overnight, but these philistines not only ripped me off for an amp which I had just paid to get fixed, they really messed up my car which is hardly worth the price I had to pay to replace the window and fix the door etc etc. And on xmas day of all times - it spoilt an otherwise special day for me in which i got given a new chainsaw... Well, I have a message for you Mr Amp Burgler in Island Bay - you missed out on my guitar, which was in the boot... Ha! Couldn't you figure out how to get in there from the inside you retard.
Oh, and I noticed you went through my tape collection in the glovebox and didnt take anything - what, Night Ranger not good enough for you?? You fucked with the wrong car and the wrong guy. Come round again this year, I'll be waiting for you...

Perhaps a mask for christmas, just to cap off the outfit? Heh imagine petty crim being chased down the street by mask wearing, chainsaw wielding angry muso. Justice.

then kill them!

my band mission gizzard played a gig at thames high school not so long ago, it was realy great and the people who attended it loved it coz it was something different.

but on return to auckland that night for another gig i found that my distortion pedal was missing, it had been stolen from inside a briefcase we keep all our gear in. but thanks to danny (the guy who started this) i had a spare pedal and we were able to put up with it.

the next day i went to the rockshop to get a new pedal i was horroified to find that boss no longer made that kind of pedal.

all i hope that the cheese dick that stole it is at least using it properly.

thanks danny!

hey alistar. hows it going?

what kinda pedal was it?

I wish I knew that my gear was being well treated by sadly I did find out that the custom made guitar was destoyed because thet guys that stole it realised they'd have a hard time selling it and even if they did it was so recognisable that it lead a trail back to them...we found out that it was the Nomads or some associate member that did the break in, but the police never found any gear and couldn't prove anything.

a boss hyper metal.Ï

hey alistar. thats a bummer about your pedal :(

heya hows it goin? im in debt now that dickweed that took my pedal made me fork out another $250 WHICH DOESNT SOUND LIKE MUCH BUT WHEN YOU GO TO SCHOOL AND DONT WORK ITS ALOT!P

hey, this is emily and ashleigh what are you up to? got study or something? we are on the computers for bio. woot wooooot

I stole it!!! Ma ha ha ha!!!

i doubt it was you as thames is a bit not up to speed with this sort of technology, but even for pretending to your a fuken cheese dick.
