11 Oct 2004 ... a sad day for NZ Music

Cos that is the day the Temple will close up shop!

Thanks to the wowsers in the Greens and their humourless, smokefree, mates in the labour party Karen Q Temple has decided to close up shop.

Along with the hassles that the Temple has had with the tosspot pen-pushers at the Auckland City Council it simply doesn't seem viable foir this place to continue.

This is so wrong ... the Temple was one of the first places my boys' band played at ... one of the few places that is happy to let anyone have a go. Most venues cannot afford to take a punt on an unknown performer .... the Temple existed to do just that.

So, one less place to have a quiet drink and enjoy some music in Auckland City ... and one less place for performers to strut their stuff. Just a shame that the government can't put as much effort into reducing crime and welfare dependency as it does into stopping people enjoying themselves. I am sure the minister for the arts is well pleased with this little result ... as if she really gives a toss about the Auckland popular music scene.

Forums: NZ Music,

Or the NZ music scene in general for that matter, the noise control problem exists throughout the whole country.
It's just as much the fault of the money hungry developers who through up their poxy concrete boxes with out sufficient insulation, so that brain dead yuppy fucks can move to the inner city (for the convenience) and then complain about the noise...if you can't stand the heat...get the fuck out of the kitchen, and let the people have their music.

yeah she was on bfm the other morning saying just that, the regulations state that the apartments must be sound insulated against each other, but not the outside, that's pretty ratshit for all concerned ... it's not as though the temple would have put out more noise than traffic up & down queen st EVERY SINGLE DAY

That's sad. I rememeber playing with ya boys there actually...one of their first gigs, pre DGD era....in Feb last year. A placed to be missed indeed.

yeah. the first place my band ever played to people who weren't friends etc already. i'm still amazed they let us play, we were very shit. anyway, it's sad for all those bands who are just starting- it's not like they're gonna get much better without any chances to play.

I played a few gigs there. It was cool because it wasn't massive and it always felt full.

Whenever I talk to bands just starting out, I always tell them to play at the temple!

It's a total bummer that the temple has to close up shop- they had seemingly endless support for local music, and like 'big_stu' says "giving anyone a go". The couple of times I have been there with Vocoder we had such awesome, funny times- especially with the very cool bar staff there. And, yes, funnily enough, one of those times was also when 'mister lemon' was playing too.

I've known people who live near town and venue areas that accept that there is going to be noise, whether on the street or from a venue, and you accept that cos that's part of the culture that you've moved into. It's like people want the vibrancy, convience and atmosphere that comes from being close to town but they want it on a schedule.

Developers too have their part to play in this argument cos, yes, they should be thinking ahead and practically instead of with their wallets. Especially those who deliberately try to cut costs by not putting in adequate sound proofing. Sound-proofing that makes sense, even if there weren't venues nearby, because of the noise that is created by people who live in the apartments themselves, all packed in like sardines.. blah blah..

As far as the smoking in bars issue goes, yeah, sometimes I do agree that it would be a totally good idea to ban it from bars- especially when you don't smoke and you come home stinking of it- but, that would make me a hypocrite, I have been partial to the odd cigarette myself in my time. Then I think it should be the people who make money of people's addictions that should be prosecuted- the people themselves, yes they have the choice not to partake, but, often once you're hooked it's a lot harder to quit doing it. Even with the prospect of having to leave a warm, happy venue for the cold harsh outside to just have that toke of a ciggie. That is, you end up punishing certain people for something that is more complex than stopping people smoking in bars.
That said, you have to go outside to go to the loo in the temple anyway so maybe you just cope with your wee selves ( that was not mean't to be a pun!)

this she says while drinking coffee that was probably created by child labour in a third world country..
it's a complicated world.

it suxs that the temple is going!
:P

I agree Axel....
But i think if they're going to close The Temple, they could at least let them have a closing down show, and create as much noise as they can. Stuff residents who decide to move into the city, go n buy a house in the wop wops.

As for the smoking laws in bars...who are they trying to kid??? The best thing they could do is sell smoke-free lighters.....this will only encourage tobbacco wars...you wait n see, it will be on tv.

dont belive the lies about closing down the temple because of the smokefree law. she was planning on doing it ages before that was in parliament. she's just using the opportunity to make a political statement.

We need to take over the goverment with a millitary coup!!! Start collecting em automatic weapons!!!!

maybe you want helen clark on the ricefields undergoing KHMER ROUGE style forced labour as well - i see.
