Selling Out or Just Cashing In?

There seems to be a lot of accusations of bands doing either or both in quite a few forums lately, hey I've been a part of it, but it brings up the question...what constitutes Selling Out and Cashing In and who is guilty of it?

I've always considered a sell out to be someone or a band who has forgotten why they started doing what they do, and instead focussed on material gain or sacrificed their ideals for material gain, an example of this would be Metallica with their obsession for suing the people that love their music (yeah fair enough napster and the like do steal money from the artist, but they went about it entirely the wrong way).

And Cashing In is quite obvious, bands/people who jump the band wagon of the latest craze or fashion in the hope of material gain, think back to all the Green Day/Pennywise clones of the mid nineties NuPunk explosion or even the latest trend of trying to sound like the MC5 or The Stooges.

Anyway, who do you think is guilty, and why?

Forums: NZ Music,

Damn, don't sneeze halfway through a post...sorry there was only supposed to be 1 thread on this topic.
