Almost a new phrase for viral marketing, a less sinister and non-curable image perhaps, ambient advertising involves placing advertisting in places you would not expect. Hand-dryers, escalator rails, yo momma. The idea is to sneak up on you and yell boo then politely ask you to buy stuff. Is this going too far though? There is mention of it encroaching on personal space but now that commercialism is so core to world culture can we really complain?

I thought this was gonna be about ambient music used in ads, which I find upsetting enough...
If I can jump sideways to mix up music and "ambient advertising", I consider the broadcast of a commercial radio station in a public space as advertising. Ignoring the "paid ads", the songs themselves are only ads for the purchasable format of that piece of music and/or any other merchandising companies hope to make a buck on.
Too simplistic?

Public space? Such as stores or spillage on to the streets?
I know people go store to store in the States introducing the person working there to new music to play on their sound system. I was watching an article on 60 Minutes a while back about viral marketing and they had these trendy hipster boys flogging The Avalanches album to some poor unsuspecting worker with the phrases "yeah, it's cool, play, the kids will buy your stuff, yeah, yeah, buy, buy, buy. music man it's like the colour yellow for buying."

Anywhere I go for a reason other than listening to music, pretty much... probably includes most bars.. but then I don't go to bars that are playing the radio anyway?!
