with summer running straight towards us, i was wondering which one was "better" and why...
with BDO and THE Cusp coming up, there will be a few people saying they'd rather see a respective band at say galatos or something along those lines...
whats your opinion???

Pub Gigs - better sound, less people (most times) a roof!! Also you get closer to the bands & even talk to them.
at the cusp there were seven of us moshing away to 1QA, in the afternoon sun, and i talked to the band afterwards, plus liam finn (he needed some sunblock)
sound was debateable i've heard much worse indoors (Pan Am at valve for one)
//Also you get closer to the bands & even talk to them. //
thats the thing though, quite often at gigs im one of few up the front
the circle of darkness often forming, Tama are you one of those people who don't give a fuck about any one else or do you hang around with the crowd, waiting for someone to make a start and go to the front???
I wait until other people go out front, but sometimes I just hang out the back
An outdoor gig can often have bad sound because of the wind and crap equipment. But then an indoor gig can have bad sound because of the roof, walls and the oversized PA. I have been to concerts outdoors with amazing sound as well as indoor gigs amazing sound.
another bad thing about outside gigs, fucking girls on their boyfriends shoulders, so you can't see!!
outdoor gigs are better cos there is less smoke! also cool when it rains, like Prodigy at the BDO! awesum.
the thing is, its a lot easier and more common (IMHO) to organise a full day outdoor gig, there are near to nil indoor gigs that i know of, bar punkfest and the odd event like that.
so the bonus of sheer number of bands is a positive for outdoor gigs
I like indoor gigs, I find that bands are more comfortable indoors, so you get that little extra intimacy that you might not get when they're outdoors and hoping their grandmothers don't hear the rubbish they talk up onstage. :)
Plus the beer is closer, the toilet is closer, and if worse comes to worst and it sucks, the door is closer.
yeah, it's hard to see that sort of intimacy at an outdoors gig. indoors gigs are just more intense ... the only outside gig i've been to that could measure up would be seeing the Clean and HDU at Rippon - HDU particularly interesting - really suited the Wanaka backdrop, and the Clean were just so focussed on the music, resulting in quite a fanatical, focussed, mad raving mob of dirt-stamping dust-making dancers.
but i really like bass, and outside gigs rarely have enough in the way of subsonic bass frequencies to satisfy my insides.
I will never forget seeing Straitjacket Fits, playing headlong into the drizzle at Mountain Rock about 10 years ago, and being astounded (and a wee bit stoned) at the sight we were all seeing.
You could never, EVER, create those sounds and sights in a pub gig.
Is Mountain Rock still going?

Seen RHCP live outdoors in Chch last year rocked Rippon outdoor gig rocks dont think either of these would have had the same effect indoors in a crowded dark stadium both good sound good moshing and fun to be had by all
Depends on the music. I would rather see sommerset in a pub with 200 people and a wicked vibe and killer sound. But give me Goldenhorse in a park on a sunny sunday just chillin on the grass.......ah summer.....
Yeah, it does depend a lot on the time of the event and the type of bands playing, could you imagine The Datsuns playing an outdoor event at, say, 1.00pm blazing mid day sun, just completely the wrong environment for their music but replace them with someone like Katchafire, nice cold beer and plenty o' sun...mmmm, summer perfection.
We've done about equal amounts of both and had a great time and awesome sounds both ways, but also like everyone else we've had some shockers at both, the worst one that I can remember was the 1st birthday party for Chaffers Park in Wellington, the wind was so strong we had trouble standing in one place and then it blew one of the speaker stacks over, also made for really dodgy front house sounds, but on the other side of that same coin it made for a really unpredictable and interesting day, which was fun, and it was agood test of skill (and balance) for all the bands that day.

I'll go with the general flow and agree that yes...it does depend on the performers. But in reference to your summer quote...oh yes...outdoor above all!!!
Go THE CUSP...Nelson is buzzing already!!! I was there last week and the locals are amping for their New Years Party!!!!
Any word on whos playing this year?? This boy can't wait...
*butterflys in stomach, uncontrollable outbursts of smile*
I like Outdoor gigs better than Indoors especially in summer. I mean c'mon loud noise isn't encapsulated as much in a cramp bar/venue (such as the Dux/Southern Blues Bar) as its absorbed into the air. But indoor gigs are good to, it's just the noise levels are ridiculously loud.
//whats your opinion?//
well in all honesty i haven't really been to enough outdoor gigs to comment
The Cusp is probably the biggest outdoor gig i've been to and i loved it
but then again, the sheer number of gigs inside i;ve been to, and the bands i've seen
looma, letterbox lambs, TLBT, ejector, batrider etc. shifts my preference to pub gigs.
BUT i haven't been to a "bad" outdoor gig, the bands in the square i have enjoyed cause often i've had the front of the stage to myself heh ;)...
mmm....summer and concerts... can't wait : )
I can't decide whether i like indoor or outdoor gigs best. I've been to more indoor gigs than outdoor ones. The first concert i went to was outdoors in the middle of summer on a beautiful sunny afternoon and it was with all my friends and there was a great atmosphere. i have fond memories. But the first indoors concert i went to was even better, even thogh i wasn't with my friends (it may have been something to do with the fact that the bands playing were better than the first concert)
It depends on the venue and the music i guess. and the atmosphere of the crowd.
indoor gigs don't have rivers...
stink.
