Mix Tapes!

Everyone loves home-made compilations! Especially when they're made especially for you by a mate/girl or boyfriend/prospective girl or boyfriend. So what are the rules for making them? Does anyone remember the Hi-Fidelity guidelines for making mix tapes? Does anyone have better guidelines?
Of course, chucking your fave rare songs together for a friend to hear is different to the drawn-out process of choosing tracks for someone who's more than a friend.
Do you create your own cover art/sleeve notes for each compilation, or photocopy the original notes? Or do you leave the poor recipient with a CD that has nothing but 'VERBATIM' stamped all over it, and no clue as to the names of the artists and songs?
By 'mix tapes' I mean cassettes and CDs, as you've already guessed. Is there a difference in 'meaning' between a mix cassette and a CD?
Time to get all in-depth, guys and girls - gory/embarassing/successful Mix Tape stories included!

Forums: The Bar,

wtf?

I wind up leaving them with no track list- having messy-scrawly handwriting and no access to a printer at 3am tends to kill it

The agony of picking X tracks, then finding there are so many others you want to add to it, especially if it's for a prospective boy/girl, which eliminates the Vitamin C, Vengaboys, and bluegrass parts of your collection
.. much procrastination ensues!

I got some CD-R's which are moulded like vynal on the back the other day, they look pretty spiffy.

..vinyl!

I heard about the vinyl ones, sound cool.

Umm, I'm nice enough to print a tracklist as a back cover. But I don't bother with front, or the actual CD (other than writing on it) because if you stick pieces of paper on, they're likely to get caught & skip in alot of players. I haven't made many mix-stuffs for other people though.

mp3 mix discs... include all the info and you can fit shit loads on it

Practical but not very Personal, which I think is half of what mix-tapes are about- sharing small parts of your tastes instead of burying someone under a sack of potatoes. Making the best use of the space available

That said, I also accept MP3 cd's- I'll think you're lazy, but I'll get over it.

lol, i'd ratha get an mp3 cd than a mix cd ;) so much more music :)

I'd prefer something I can play on my sterio & in my discman over something I have to get onto the computer for.

my best selection is da best mah!!!!

mp3s are less personal, yes. Also, if it's for a mate and you're putting on songs they've never heard then you're just showing off! Ha - It should be a small compilation, guys, not a 45-track summary of your record collection!

well maybe just put the best 10 tracks, "keep it personal".
shit who cares........

follow the seasons

spring= soft melodic
summer= loud melodic
autumn= loud dissonant
winter= soft dissonant

on 1 c90 you can either have 6 spring 6 summer 6 autumn 6 winter or do a cycle of one of each until you finish- you acn go further & do slow & fast of each season- start with the season you're in when you make the tape

make the tape to mark an occassion & signify it with some song on the compilation- ie the modern lovers hospital as a get well- tonoi k's h-a-t-r-e-d for a break up- the ronettes best part of breaking up as an apology &c

put avril on it somewhere

I usually go fast song, slow song, fast song, slow song etc.

I love making my own art work, I've done everything from the computer designed to the hand painted sleeve. My favourite of late was made from a cut out job which involved photocopies from a manual on design and human measurements.

I tend to make mixes of the songs I currently am in love with... I think perhaps I should get a little more varied.

My most recent was an nz music comp for a friend moving to europe. For the first time I didn't bother putting on my usual faves and worked to someone elses tastes.... i think it turned out alright...

although, I had limited cds to work from then, hence the repeat of some artists.

more than ne song by any one band is fine, just not many, between 1 & 3 is a god number, depending on hw many tracks and how long each song is i guess

nah- shouldn't have more than 1 by any artist- che fux2=not a brilliant compilation

i guess it depends on the artist in y opinion and of course what sort of music

I like to start a mix with an artist then finish it with the same artist. Also I build up to a real loud song, then over about 4 songs bring it back to a slow one.

But I haven't done one for a while ... don't think I'll be bothered doing one again either, really ... unless maybe it's for that special someone.

Like I said, I had limited cds with me, and I was doing it for someone else.

I tend to start my mix cds with an instrumental, I'm hopelessly bad at trying to follow the rule of not repeating the artist on the cd

i like mix tapes more than mix cd's because it takes more effort into making a mixtape which adds the personal feel.

I have a couple of mates I swap mixtapes with.
My strategy, I like to give them something they are not all together familiar with, also I like a flow where one song will fit snugly against another & it can be done effectively switching genres.
If they don't work I sometimes splice in a beat or a sample to escort you to the next track.
I like to test run a tape or disk for a week in the car before bidding it farewell.
& I love recieving mix tapes/disc's in the mail, they do however invariably lead to a number of purchases.

i like mixing easy listening albums.

I make compilations for elevators
