Home Recording

hi,i was just wondering what the basics were to start a little recording studio on my computer. What software?gear? etcetc. Id mainly be just recording guitar tracks. Im a student so it would have to be on a small budget, thanks

Forums: The Bar,

if you are just recording ideas and demos use your sound blaster sound card or whatever.
if you want to release it - best get a decent soundcard first.
then it would be helpful to have a small mixing desk - you could use an old 4 track tape recorder.

and an easy to use beginners multi track recording and editing programme is cool edit pro, there are others but this is easy to get for free - even the demo version has 10 recording tracks

good luck - have fun

Yeah I think by decent Trillion means a dedicated card designed for recording not a soundcard built to output general sound.

No dude, dowload COOL EDIT PRO 2.0
It's a great software, you can record voice, guitar, keyboards, fart...
Everything. Add effects and a lot more.

has it got an echo delay? or a ping pong pan filter wah plexi amp sim? coz thats what i think alot of doctors mis-diagnose

This is a thread dedicated to home recording

get a big to small and an amp sim, then simply wack ur gat straight into ur line in on yer soundcard.
you could be the next Cripple

here's hoping

add another guitar lead to that...

DI sounds like puss.

go guitar to amp, then amp to computer, its not as good as having a pre amp, but you can have more control over the sound.

If you have a computer - there's heaps you can download if you go on the net. fruityloops is really good, as is acid pro i think it's called. You can download shit like this through Napster type programs. Just a word to the wise - if you're going to download stuff, i'd recommend doing a tonne of downloading - put it all to disk (CD) and then format your computer. make sure you get rid of any viruses on thre. THe last thing you want to do is to record it then have something screw it up.

Put things to disc as much as poss, and if you're playing guitar, record direct to the computer. If you want to learn how to use these products really well head down to a music shop that sells the software. (but don't let they talk you into buying any software - for an ameture you can get all the shit off the net!).

I agree though, get a good sound card. Get decent speakers - monitor speakers if poss. Means when you play it on any other sound system, you'll get basically the same sound you actually recorded. Normal speakers are set naturally with more bass or more treble - so if you can afford them, i've heard that can make quite a difference, but normal speakers will suffice.

The programms above are good programmes, and produce a cool sound if you have the patience to work them out. Totally worth a look. And try finding chat rooms about them, people who use them lots often like to talk about them lots too... brag about the latest feature they've found and shit, so keep an eye out there too.

Hope that's been of some help...

Bit of info about some of the software packages people are using here...

Cakewalk 3 is really easy to use and its bloody good.

I use Cooledit 2.0 with the 2.1 patch for all my work - deep editting and multitrack. It doesn't do record/mix *quite* as well as Protools, but it's up there. I like editting in Cooledit better than Protools though.
