I was thinking about this a long time ago.
In the 60s, music was all about melodies, guitars, bass, piano and a lot of beautiful melodies. Songs with a lot of chords and arpegios. The drummer was a stupid guy, with a big machine, and his job was to hit the snare drum and the hi-hat.
It was all about the melodies, if the drummer made a mistake, it didn't really matter.
In these times, the drummer seems to be the BASE of everything.
I mean, let's check NIRVANA... Kurt jump to the crowd, and the guitar doesn't sound, or sounds like shit, but it doesn't matter, as long as the drums goes on, everything is OK.
And the quality of guitar players declines everyday.
ONLY POWER CHORDS and the little solo.
Of course there are bands with great guitar players, but I think the melodies are missing.
I miss the good old melodies and the chords.
IF a modern drummer can't play with a double pedal, he's a piece of shit, but a guitar player can be a POWER CHORD player.
I don't know, fuck, you tell me, what do you think?

Any one ever heard of Buddy Rich? ...
Any one ever heard of Buddy Rich? Before the guitar became so important, some drumemrs were actually put front and centre stage. The drumming was a big part of the show. Of course, they did more than just carry a beat. Poor bastards these days are lucky to get royalties and lug more gear. Is that why we call them stupid? Or is it just the fact that the drum dates back to the neanderthal days? Depends which way we look at it. Do we call drumemrs "the original musicians" or "the least evolved"? Of course, I happen to be in love with a drummer who happens to have a Psychology degree, so maybe I'm biased.

RE: "...Drummers ...
RE: "...Drummers center-stage..."
Trans-Am played a show at Bodega not so long ago, and their drummer was set up right at the front in the middle. Same with Shellac, they played at a Vic Uni Orientation show with HDU a few years back and had the drummer set up front and center. Awesome, especially since their drummers are so visually interesting (anyone remember that trail of drool seeping from the corner of the Shellac drummer's mouth?!) ...

yeah, same with the old skool jazz era, take a drummer like Elvis Jones, an absoulute legend in the jazz world, everyone was focused on the drummer back then.

Buddy Rich has been voted best Drummer ever over and over again (John Bonham close second)
and man I think You'll find its ElviN Jones.
Drums are allways the first thing I notice when listening to or seeing a band.
A great drum sound+performance can turn a very bad song into a hit.

Wow dude, what world do you live on, have a real listen to what some of the drummers were doing back in the 60's and you'll here that most modern drummers don't even come close to having the technical skill or the feel of those guys...ie, Bill Ward, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Terry Bozzio, Aynsley Dunbar and those are just some of the rock boys I won't even get started on the funk scene!

And just to round things out abit, Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) Clive Bunker (Jethro Tull) and Lee Kerslake (Uriah Heap) and if you think thats the end of the talent from the 60's grab a copy of the Woodstock video and take a look at Jimi's performance or Santana and the maniac drummers they both had with them.

True, but neither of those 2 made an impact on the Sixties, I love both their drumming but they weren't around during the time period in question, i've always dug Neil Peart as a drummer too, but again wrong time frame.
From modern time, 2 drummers who I really think fit the bill and would have easily cut it with the finest from the 60's, and this is complete bias on my part because i've had the priviledge of working with them both, would be Ryan Tregurtha, he played drums for MP for 5 years, full onmetal head but he also played drums for a Hip Hop outfit called Young And Ruthless, I think they got a second place in the Rockquest in about '96, he had an unbelievable style, I first saw him play when he was 17 and it just blew me away, the thing I most loved about him was his really eclectic taste for all styles of music and the way he could pull off the most technical pieces and still look as though he was about to go to sleep.
And the other is Matt Swain, he replaced Ryan in the MP engine room for 18 months, complete Keith Moon freak, and with that really loose, barely held together manic style that so many of the drummers form the 60's had, he's now playing drums for OdESSA, and his attack and attitude is still so much fun to watch, he's a true showman drummer, but just like Ryan an expert in knowing when NOT to play.
Maybe we should start anther thread for modern drummers who we think will leave a lasting mark on the music world just like the names we've mentioned in this current thread.

Wow, wait...
I'm not saying old drummers suck. I'm saying that, as long as instruments techniques goes on, drummers seems to be the only musicians interested to be updated to those new changes.
Except for Swedish bands and Progressive music, Guitar players around the world are being lazy. They don't want to learn new things. POWER CHORDS and SOLO.
Who would I blame??
California PUNK ROCKERS and HARD DISTORTION.
That's all, I really want to listen to nice chords.

Anyway back to the topic, fair call gramps, as a guitarist I can see where you're coming from, there does seem to be a regretable lack of real talent amongst the 6 string fraternity these days, Nirvana did a great thing by killing the guitar hero, but it's time that someone re-introduced the melodic guitar player, I know personally when I play even the simplest pentatonic lead, or motif, young dudes look at me like it's some kind of hidden secret or forgotten magic, I often have to wonder what is there to inspire younger people to even learn the guitar these days, when I was learning it was all Satriani, Vai and Guitar Rock bands, players you could really look up to and say "yeah , I want to be that guy", this whole Nu-Metal bullshit craze and the lack of real playing ability that it has bred is such a drag.
