Rockquest from the South

This year Rockquest once again promises to deliver to the NZ audience an extraordinary number of potential world beaters. The interesting thing is that the South island is stepping up to the plate in a big way. I have had the good fortune to see some of the bands they have to offer and I was blown away.
For example, I saw the CHCH finals and man! The band that ended up second in the National finals (now know as Falter) ended up with a second in the regionals this year. Both Falter and Moses and the Mufflers will be tough to beat. However Nelson has delivered 2 bands that even offers more. Monkeypuzzle (they share the name with an Auckland band so don’t get confused) by all accounts is a strong contender. Unfortunately I have not heard them personally, but I have only heard good things.
The Housewives has international success written all over it. I was sent a video of their performance this week and trust me each and every song is hit material. These guys are some of the best I have heard. I was blown away to discover that I had seen them in their Jazz band The Groove Collective in Auckland last year. They were stunning then as well.
And then there is Wellington. Another gig I was able to attend. Watch out for Anime as well. These guys can play.
Like the days when Dunedin and CHCH stepped up to take the lead in NZ Music the south I believe will once again make NZ music theirs. From what I have seen up here in Auckland, bands like the Housewives, Moses and Falter write better, tighter songs and work harder at performance. There seem to be an attitude that making music it fun rather than cool. And because of that attitude even an old woman like me in her late 20s just want to get into the pit when these guys play.
I am only glad that I was in the privacy of my office when I watched The Housewives video, I am sure that I would have made a complete fool out of myself if I was at the gig. However something tells me that I will get plenty of opportunity as far as this particular band is concerned.
Their website is also worth checking out at housewives.nz.cx.

Forums: NZ Music,

I agree, maybe there is some-one from down south that can tell us why this is. Glad you liked the vid.

Mluvr, I represent the Housewives in Auck and we have some huge plans for them as I said when I sent you the vid. we are working on them doing us another TV soundtrack and looking at an album later this year. Also look for a big tour.

Just to clear this up Monkey Puzzle, the band that have been using the name for 8 years are from Wellington, not Auckland and the band from Nayland High School in Nelson have been served with cease and desist papers from using the name, as they in breach of Trademark and Copyright law, if as you have reported, they are still using the name Monkey Puzzle legal action will be taken.

I don't want to be rude mate but can I get this straight?
You were in a band called Monkey Puzzle who were around for quite a long time. They ceased playing a couple (?) of years ago. You are now in a band called Sideshifter, which is not only actively gigging but planning an Aussie tour. Don't you think it's a tad wanky to be serving legal papers on schoolboys?

If I have the story wrong sorry.

Monkey Puzzle was still playing up until April this year, we still have an active website (which incedently recieved 42000 individual hits in the past year) we have a best of album being released in the next to weeks, several video and TV production companies are still using our material in current and upcoming releases and we still intend to carry on playing under that name at a later date.
The reason we requested them to cease and desist from using the name was due to trademark infringement on their part, and to avoid confusion between the bands when it comes to gigging, royalty payments and publicity.
Over the past 8 years we've spent thousands of dollars and a great deal of time establishing the branding and name, yeah I feel like a cunt for having to take leagl action but as we pointed out to them, a very simple internet search back when they started would have quickly alerted them to the fact that we already were using the name and would have saved the hassle, we also contacted them in March while we were still activly playing and advised them that the name was unavailable in NZ.
We don't wish these young guys any ill will, but at the same time we're trying to avoid the confusion that may arrise.

By your question can I assume that just because Shihad no longer use the name you would think it acceptable for someone else in NZ to start using it? and at the same time you would find it unreasonable if they or their record company took action against someone who did?

Fair enough. Thought it was a longer time ago that you stopped playing and a, errr, slightly less successful band. Glad to see you do feel a bit bad ;) but I can see where you're coming from.

To answer your question, Shihad have a very long and popular history within New Zealand. I think the older and more well known the band (& also how long ago they broke up), the more realistic the cease and desist papers.

Yeah we call ourselves" the biggest band you never heard of" we've sold 10 000+ copies of our albums worldwide, not a great deal in the grand sceme of things, but we were happy with it.
Apparently there's a book on the history of Kiwi rock being written that has a page about us, but i'll believe that when I see it, still it'd be nice if it is true, to get recognition for our efforts.

you sound like wanker.

I have just read the above and I feel that maybe we need to all settle down a bit. Monkey Puzzle as a producer of television shows internationally for the last 20 odd years I can see where you are comming from and I agree that we have to protect our intelectual property. However I have to say that I have to admit to having sympathy with the above correspondent. Serving school boys with notices is a bit like blowing up sandcastles with nuclear bombs. I am sure that the guys would have been more in awe and stoked to have a friendly phone call to explain the situation.

I am reminded of john lennon when meeting with an American band called the beatles on their first trip to the States asking if the American beatles minded Lennon and co poaching some of their established fan base to help establish them there. All said with tongue in cheek and the US band changed their name. It was not a big deal and neither should this be.

But back to the issue in question, I am still interested in why these SI bands are so accomplished.

Tried that, but it didn't seem to work.
We made offers of tour and gig assistance in the North Island and explained our position back in March/April.

Anyway to your original point, maybe it's the isolation and seeming lack of attention focussed on Sth Island bands that has spurred them on to their current levels of skill.
Incidently, has there been a south Island winner of the Rockquest before? if not maybe it's about time, hopefully it'll be these young guys, it'd be a great pay off for them after the hassle of a name change.

fair enough

//But back to the issue in question, I am still interested in why these SI bands are so accomplished.
oysterbokkie

Quite an ignorant post...you sound like every second Joe Bloggs in the industry talking...no fault of your own I guess. It's just awareness at the end of the day...and lack of recognition and support of networks that are establishing here all the time. Heres a list of bands/artists that float my boat and yes..all from the mainland my friends...

Falter - Chch
Neavus - Chch
Mother Guru - Nelson
Degrees.K - Chch (Currently in OZ)
Mikazi III - Nelson
Cripple Mr Onion - Chch
The Housewives - Nelson
Monkey Puzzle - Nelson
Silver Cloud Lounge - Dunedin
Yellow 7 - Nelson
Maenad - Wanaka
Ee. - Nelson (Formerly Wanganui...Nelson's definitely claiming these boys...YUM!)
Sam Bell - Hokitika
Good Night Nurse - Invercargill

//Anyway to your original point, maybe it's the isolation and seeming lack of attention focussed on Sth Island bands that has spurred them on to their current levels of skill.

The talent, passion and dream of the south island bands I have seen and worked with have shown so much conviction it saddens me when I see the lack of support and work these bands are dealt due to the fact that they choose lifestyle over industry...there shouldn't even be an option.

//Incidently, has there been a south Island winner of the Rockquest before? Carriage H (Dunedin) 2001.

I apologize Mother Guru if I read your post wrong but you seem to argue the same side of the point i am. However I do take offence at being called ignorant. I am based in Auckland (well noth of Auckland) and have spent a lot of time helping bands in the South. Free of charge as well. So bud get a few facts straight. i asked the question because it is a valid one and if we are going to grow the bands from down in the SI we need to get them in front of the rest of the country as much as we can and that includes innitiating discussions in Forums like this.

OysterBokkie...apologies for my last post. No offence intended.
I was more so turning a comment around on those people who do have a naive view on the SI scene and may take notice next time they have one pass through thier town. By the sounds of things you have a lot of energy and time for supporting kiwi bands which, as a musician, I greatly appreciate.
I too have a strong faith in our scene and would love nothing more than to assist in creating a significant export for our country. Keep it up!!!

//Mikazi III - Nelson//

aren't those the guys who hijack other bands gigs???
heh
found memories of seeing these guys at THE cusp...

when are the announcements being made MG (question mainly aimed at Daz though)

Haha, yeah im the bassist.
Music will be up soonish... i dont really want to put up any crap quality recordings. I'll put up live videos soon though... just my software has fuxd and orcon have probs or sumin, so the site takes a lifetime to load. Which is real frustrating i must say.
I used to play in a band with an ex housewives member... brady ;)

anyway, you'll see it up somewhere soon, we are playing at the parthenon 23rd this month with Autozamm and the like. check it out.

I could not agree more.... Let's get these guys out there and known. I would love to see
(And I will trust me) Falter , Moses and The housewives slog it out for the top spot in the Bruce Mason Theater.
I also predict that these three bands if they stay together will elclipse some of their predecessors on the international scene.
lets just hope that unlike the Datsuns these guys does not have to go and find fame overseas before they are picked up here.

I cannot speak for Falter or Moses and The Mufflers but we are certainly doing our best to get The Housewives some international gigs. It is sad but true that local RCs wait until they see what Aus do before they stick their neck out.
We are fortunate in that we have production and recording connections in the USA and can assist The Housewives in that way, but how many of the bands like Falter and Moses and the Mufflers , who are no less deserving, does not get that sort of assistance?

From a working musicians point of view, gigging overseas has more to do with trying to find a bigger audience than anything else, sure a lot of Kiwi bands don't seem to be able to get recognition here (Us included) but i've looked at it quite hard recently and a big proportion of the problem lies in demographics, our music will only appeal to a small percentage of any given population/ buying public, in a country as small as NZ we just don't have the numbers to make a decent living out of music, even playing covers is a meagre existance compared to most occupations, so the only option for expanding your crowd base is to travel.

As for the Datsuns, they play support for us a few years ago and at the time I didn't think much of them, but after they went overseas I think it drove home a few realities about professional bands and the level of performance you have to have to cut it in the ultra competitive world market, 2 years ago I saw them and followed them through 4 shows in Melbourne, and I have to say I could instantly see then that they really had grown and learned a trick or 2, and it was obvious they were on the way up.

Maybe it'd be good for NZ music if a few more bands tried the world market out and toured overseas, we might see an even bigger improvement in the quality of bands around the country.

Right on MP . But that brings up another quetion or rather point. It always astounds me how bands that does jingles are attacked on these boards. Mostly I believe by people who are jealous for not having the oppertunity or who are not skilled enough as musicians to be offered the opportunity, because heaven forbid, you have to be able to read and write music rather than read tabs.

As I said ealier the Housewives have been asked to write a second soundtrack for us. And allthough they have to write and perform to our specifications for the programme here is what they get out of it:
1) They are paid as much as they would earn in a month of gigs for the original work.
2) Every time their music is played on air, they receive royalties (beats stack shelves hey)
3) They get to work in a professional enviroment and they learn that being a serious musician is like any other job. Reponsibilities - but a blast.

4)They get heard and known overseas. The show will air in the US and in UK so that autamatically provides them with some cred when approaching promoters or venues over there.

Yes there is a small market here and yes it makes it hard to make a living. But for a band like the Housewives and their alter ego The Groove Collective, who is prepared to get out of bed at 6 am and work till 12 pm for a week, to deadline and to a brief, the payoff is huge.....
They get to play their own music how they want at their gigs without having to worry about stacking shelves to pay for strings and drum sticks....

Have to agree there, i've been doing jingles and voiceover work on the side for years now, and if you even mention it you get treated like a leper...the bonus though as you said is the cred you get in the industry and the contacts you can make.

for what its worth.

The groove collective were interesting.
The Houswives seem to be these same boys trying to cash in on the haves success last year and the current rock'n'roll fad.

Why don't they perhaps try doing something original.

That is an interesting though Dude, maybe they can use some rap or a dj or play some jazz or....
Have you thought that maybe they like playing that type of music?
It is a bit rich acusing some-one of trying to cash in on another bands sucess.
it is obvious that they have a big following that like their music.
Surely they are entitled to play the music they like.

sorry, maybe you missed my point.

3 of the 4 members of the housewives play in The Groove Collective...a jazz band right.

now, they have entered the rockquest. Formed specifically in 2003 FOR the rockquest, as a "rock'n'roll" band. Last year several of the members played in a "technical rock" band.

Sorry, maybe I've just gotten the wrong end of the stick, but it looks to me like like they tried to work out what would give them their best chance of winning and started a r'n'r group.

and they chose a "THE" name to help further their cause. Smells like sell out to me. Sorry kids if I'm wrong.

Smells like a wicked name... and band.
great lyrics, thoo i aint fond of the singer really.
Othawise, rock.

hey schmash I take it from your website that you are connected to anime. When are you guys posting some music?
If I am right then it is amazing that those who support and encourage are sucessful and talented bands and musos ie Mother Guru, Monkey Puzzle and the like..
And those who try to break down a band are ...well work it out yourself. There is a very interesting thread on sour grapes later on this board.
From what i have heard from oysterbokkie, this band is in for the long haul. Apparently they have arrange their uni plans so that they can stick together. And again according to OB they have a very heavy rehearsal and gig schedule for both incarnations of the band.
Now correct me if I am wrong but this sounds like hard work to me and perhaps dedication...
And that is what the music industry is about.
If any of the housewive read this post.... keep it up guys I look forward to meeting you guys in person in October... and schmash if you are from anime you guys rock as well. get that music on the net

Thats cool jimi...Those shows are not really creatively challenging are they?
I never got to see you guys live allthough Joe did play me cd.
Are all you guys still playing?
Joe is an amazing drummer. Very passionate and technicly brilliant. And the combination of Dan and Joe is stunning. i think that when you have a rythm section that is that good and that tight you are going to sound good no matter what.

I would still like to have mother guru get in touch with me.. mail bokkie@oysterfilms .co.nz

Sorry maybe selling out was the wrong term, cashing in is probably more appropriate, but I still really admire bands that don't limit themselves to one sound, i've always tried to avoid it with my song writing and people have often said it's something they enjoy about seeing bands that i'm involved with.

I really hate seeing bands where you can't tell where one song ends and the next one starts, or even all the songs sound like the same progression with different lyrics, I think that's what annoys me most about the "Punk" scene, and I don't say that lightly because MP started out as a punk band, the reason we removed our selves from that scene was the stagnation within it....so I really have to say good on these guys (The Housewives) for being so diverse, hell I'd love to do a show with them just to get a chance to see the music in a live setting.

That is a big call MP and one that I believe would blow the guys away. It is always an honour to have an established muso say that they would like to play with you.
i'll let them know. When are you off to Aus?
The jazz version of the Housewives The Groove collective has 3 or 4 gigs over the next month
I dont know when The housewives are gigging next.

We're on the 4 1/2 week countdown to Oz, we're back at the end of Sept, we still have one or two spots left in October and then it's looking like Dec/Jan before we could do anything, but I'm serious about wanting to do a gig with these guys, they sound pretty cool, They're based in Nelson? we'd be happy to come down and do a show with their hometown crowd, and then maybe do a contra deal up here.

Drop me a line at sideshifter@paradise.net.nz or danny@monkeypuzzle.co.nz

i would love to see that gig! Housewives supporting sideshifter.
Talk about eneegy plus!
Even an old cow like me would get a bit of a rev up.
I have sort of stayed out of the discussions lately but have kept an eye on it. I think that if there were more bands like M Guru and Sideshifter around who supports new talent rather than jealously guarding their patch, NZ music wil always be at the cutting edge. We are small but by Christ we have had some major influence on world music. And I think we tend to forget the likes of M Guru and Sideshifter/monkey puzzle who contributes so much.
Good on you guys

it's all down to Karma, if you not willing to share what you've got, you'll always have nothing.
Thank You mluvr, hope you're having a bloody great day. I am, the sun is shining, it's warm and my crazy dog is doing weird things which is always entertaining!

ooops, by the way, we'd be happy to play support for them, especially if it's in THEIR home town!

On ya Mluvr I wholeheartedly agree.
Haha MP be careful that would just give the boys big heads posts like that.
They would be thrilled I am sure to support you guys.
I sent you a couple of emails.
regards

Cheers, i'll get back to ya that way.

It'd be nice to include the Nayland boys that tried using our name as well, just to show there's no hard feelings.

Nice thought
Whatch out though sainthood is a bitch LOL

I'm far from saintly, just trying to make up for past and ongoing sins more likely!!

oysterbokkie, please don't go off any of our recordings. We never really got anything to be proud of in the slightest, unfortunately. We're not playing, being so far away from each other, but I'm trying in vain to learn the guitar. I'm getting bored without music so hopefully there'll be a new project soon.

I really like Joe's drumming. He constantly impressed us when we were creating. Of course there are always things to work on and I'm pretty sure he realises that.

bah, posted wrong place above.

//Haha, yeah im the bassist.

Dude, I can see what you're getting at and yeah it does seem a bit sell out, but the fact that its the same guys trying again as opposed to guys that have never played together before makes the difference.
The fact that they are willing to keep going despite their previous failure and are obviously bright enough to re-think their approach makes them more likey to succeed in the long run...sure thet are trying to jump a band wagon a bit by doing the whole Rock and Roll thing, but Rockquest is an means to an end, so if it gets them established then they can go ahead and do the music they really want to do, but on the other hand if they are trying to cash in on the boring R'n'R revival scene thats happening at the moment they'll fall flat on their faces, if you make a concious decision to follow a trend you're already too late.

From what i've heard of them personally I hope they do win, and then carry on to bigger and better things, which judging from their obvious musical abilities will be pretty damn impressive.

If I may I have to totally disagree with the sellout comment
What we are seeing is in fact a group of young men who are extremely passionate about music, and chose not to limit themselves in how they express that passion.
I am somewhat confused as to what faliure you are reffering to? Do you mean Inspid who one the regionals here in Nelson last year? If you are only one member of that band is also in The Housewives.

Aka I think that monkey puzzle is actually supportive,
Just a bit of background to the guys from the Housewives. I know that 3 of the guys are planning to do the Jazz degree next year depending on their success as the Housewives this year.
They are passionate about jazz but love and enjoy playing rock. And their music writing talents in both genres are exceptional.
I believe that they have the right combination
Musical knowledge - theory
Talent and skill
Attitude and commitment
Hard work
but most of all passion.
Charl the guitarist spends on average 3 to 4 hours a day practicing and on top of that you have band practice and music theory. Plenty of commitment i would think.

I possibly should have said I was talking to Dude but I did think it was easy to see that...oh well

//Last year several of the members played in a "technical rock" band

Hahaha. I think most people referred to us as a 'crap rock' band.

Jimmi were you playing drums in the long division unit?
If so your new band rocks...
We had some of them round for beers with the housewives when we were in nelson last

No, I was in Joe's band. By the way, I wasn't saying earlier that I thought fishing programmes were selling out. It's just funny.

This is turning into a very interesting post. There is so many bands around that is worthy of assistance but I have read posts on this site where any-one who does anything to promote their music seem to be cut down. Take the telecom ad for one. Every-one saying that these muso's are selling out to"the big corporate" What absolute crap!!!!
The same critics run off to text their mates on a service provided by "the big corporate" after spouting their jealous little whinging comments on a computor built by "the Big Corporate" over a net provided by "the Big Corporate". And later they sit down with a beer or a RTD and spout on about how much integrity they have.. Give me a break!!!

Let's get it straight. Any artist that believes that they are to good or their music would be demeaned have a look at those who had gone before:
Micheal jackson, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Led Zeplin and even pavaroti has performed in or have their music used in ads.
Creed, POD, Eminem, and the list would go on forever has had their music used in films....
But these poor wannabe's are to good and have too much integrity!!!???
Good on you Housewives take every opportunity you get.

Once again Mlvr you are on the money. The Housewives are currently preparing for the Rockquest Finals if they make it so we have had to put the soundtrack on hold until after that and after their exams. But I have to say that I was blown away by their attitude. they have suggested that we have a listen to Mother Guru as well and contact them to be involved. If Mother Guru reads this thenemail me some of your music so i can have a listen. The housewives also want to involve the surf legend Glen cambell or G from raglan. This attitude of sharing is quite refreshing... see not every-one are uptight little losers.

PS I still want to know why Mother Guru called me ignorant
