Here's the lyrics to a song by LCD Soundsystem called 'I'm Losing My Edge'. Made me giggle.
i'm losing my edge
the kids are coming up from behind
i'm losing my edge
to the kids from france and from london
but i was there
i was there in 1968
i was there at the first Can show
in Cologne
i'm losing my edge
to the kids whose footsteps i hear when they get on the decks
i'm losing my edge
to the internet seekers, who can tell me every member of every good group from 1962 to 1978
all the words
i'm losing my edge
to all the kids in tokyo and berlin
to the art school brooklynites in little jackets
and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80s
i'm losing my edge
but i was there
i'm losing my edge
i can hear the footsteps every night on the decks
but i was there
in 1974, for the first Suicide practices
in a loft in New York City
i was working on the organ sounds
with much patience
i was there when captain beefheart started up his first band
i told him
"don't do it that way
you'll never make a dime"
i was there
i was the first guy playing daft punk to the rock kids
i played it at CBGBs
everybody thought it was crazy
we all know
i was there
i've never been wrong
i used to work in a record store
i had everything before anyone
i was there
in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan
i was there
in Jamaica during the great sound clashes
i woke up naked on a beach in Ibiza in '88
but i'm losing my edge
to better looking people
with better ideas and more talent
who're actually really, really nice
i'm losing my edge
I heard you have a compilation of every good song ever done by anybody
every great song by the Beach Boys. all the underground hits
all the modern lover's tracks
i heard you have vinyl of every niagara record, on german import
i heard you have a white label of every seminal detroit techno hit 1985 86 87
i heard that you have a cd compilation of every great 60s cut
and another box set of the 70s
i hear that you're buying a synthesizer, and an arpegiator and throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real
you wanna make a Yazz record
i hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables
i hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars
i hear everybody that you know is more relevant than everybody that i know
have you seen my records?
You don't know what you really want

The thing is you kind of have to be the sort of trainspotter knob it's bagging to get half the gags. Lucky I can rise to that challenge. ;)

I should mention that the track is a dance track. In fact now I think about it, almost all the references are to do with key events in the history of dance music.
every young music lovers fantasy isn't ...
every young music lovers fantasy isn't it- somehow a keen 20, 25 yr old will have more information & understand more fully all the permutations & combinations of the history of music- this understanding trickling down & enabling them to create far more 'valid' music with far less effort- that kind of thing- the 'young turk'- the 'younger faster stronger' wave only works in fields of physical endeavor- sometimes not even then- in the history of ancient greece there was a wrestler of great reknown- in his later years the fathers set him against the 'great new hope'- young able & strong- fully expecting that this 'show' match would establish the young man's rep- the old wrestler won the match- easily even- the fathers concluded that it was won by experience & they gave to the victor the prize- a strong young bullock- the old wrestler took the prize- looked at the match organizers- gazed into the eyes of his vanquished foe- took the bullock by the horns- twisted- & ripped it's head clean off
¿mental endeavor?- dorothy parker & a bright new hollywood starlet headed for the same exit of a restaurant simultaneaously- starlet opens door for dot- 'age before beauty' she quips- dot walks thru the door- 'pearls before swine' she replies
i've met some 25 year olds who have a dubbed copy of harmonia deluxe- maybe even a cd copy- they usually love the record & have listened to it on average 2ice weekly for the year or 2 that they've owned it- i've had a vinyl copy for almost 30 yrs- listened to it 1000's of times- met rother & dinger- & a lot of the other 'luminaries' of german music of the time- got their records too- don't think a lot of them are as 'great' as they're made out to be- listen to kraftwerks 1st album (yes- i've got an original copy of that too) it's actually pretty crap- ¿how can any of these young guys compete?- 5 or so years of intense study & seeking out rarities can't match 50 odd years of the same- ¿so their 'attitude' & 'confidence' is a full 110%?- even without the back up that counts for a lot- mine- however- is a justified 1000+%- i've yet to meet a 25 yr old who owns a copy of deluxe & can discuss monteverdi & the venetian school- or hugo wolf even- 2 particular passions of mine- artists who i rate far higher than harmonia- harmonia being- after all- kinda pedestrian- like the song tho

The interaction between old bull young bull, dorothy parker & a bright new hollywood starlet, the 25 year old seeker and lena o, no doubt you're used to the youthful quest for knowledge, brash and fumble like the first sneak under a brassiere, sometimes teachers reward us with their insight and knowledge, and give it as a gift.

I don't exactly seek them out. When I press 'last 100 posts' and your icon keeps nagging at my peripheral vision like some kind of little child, it's hard not to notice.
