i'm sure i'll still frequent bars but it'd be a pain if it was a club type place and you had to keep showing ID or making sure your shoes were clean and respectable blah blah to get back in
then again i'm not a fan of those places to begin with ... what the hell, i don't really care, but it would seem alien drinking with no smoking
Smoking should be ok to smoke in bars, but not just arond people who dont like it, They should have a smokefree area and a freesmoking area, that way the system would be able to work better...
They should have specific areas to smoke in otherwise have real mean as ventilation to take all the smoke/bad air out. That would solve the problem completely. They should provide ventilation regardless & make it something that bar owners would need to comply by if they are to operate such things because we are getting more sick as we leave these things alone & even though smoking has been around for ages, what about our poor health? We need to take more care of ourselves.
I voted for go outside an puff, but rather than a ban I'd prefer to see bars having to provide proper ventilation systems if they want to allow smoking inside their venue. that would help with the overheating and noise restriction issues as well.
I don't smoke, I don't like coming home from a gig reeking of ciggies, but I don't like the thought of a ban. Scuzzy rock, a dingey bar, a pint and a ciggie just seems to fit - I mean where are we? Like, L.A.?
Bodega has a good ventilation system.
Smoking in restaurants however, while I'm trying to enjoy my food? ...hell no.
there is a VERY good air scrubber system that the bar were i work just instaled but that deals with the smoke that hangs in the air....what really burns me is people who blow smoke over the bar towards me....as if we don't matter *sob*]
// what really burns me is people who blow smoke over the bar towards me...
I tend to try and avoid that... I turn around and send it back into the person behind me in the queue :)
Yeah, I think the poll should have had an option for better ventilation. Living in the bitter north, I know how much it sucks to have to go outside to smoke when it's the middle of fucking winter and your cigarette freezes to your lip if you're not careful.
And at the same time I quit, all of my friends who'd previously quit started up again, and it would suck to go out with a whole bunch of people and be left alone while they go outside to smoke, because fuck if I'm going out there when it's 40 below if I don't absolutely have to.
Guess what the only other (non Califorinian) example of this type of legislation is in China where smoking is officially banned in public.
Wow what a good example for our government to follow.
i dont really mind i am no smoker but some of my m8 r and i dont mind. if osme 1 askes yo please put it out my m8's will so ask people if u want then to put it out
yes smoking should be allowed in bars. it seems very anti social when a group of 4 people have to leave, and go outside and around the corner for 10 mins just to have a smoke.
but thats a good thing in some respects though. I mean sure, they have all this anti-smoking propaganda, but if it becomes anti-social (as it would if they banned it in bars), then more people will want to give up.
I think that the current government is turning into a Dictatorship. I think that people should be free to smoke in bars. If they need to, have smoking areas, with isolated air circulation systems. I am a smoker myself, although i'm trying to quit. If people don't want people smoking around them, all they need to do is say something like "excuse me, can you please move. No offense, but i'm asthmatic". As the man said before, most smokers will either stub out the ciggie, or smoke elsewhere, unless they're arseholes. It's called being considerate to others
but people smoking is, in a sense, a dictatorship anyway. why? because theres so many in bars, and non-smokers have NO CHOICE but to breathe in this polluted air. You're taking away their right to freedom of fresh air. fascist smokers...
When you say a dictatorship, what do u mean by that?
Oh and smokers are the best thing for any publicised govts economy. We pay a shitload of tax on the cigarettes we smoke, the chewing gum we buy and the listerene strips we use (thank god for those strips). As a result we die earlier, therefore saving them the cost of pension. So it just sounds wierd. they're FORCING us to stop becoming economically viable? i dont trust disestablishmentarianists.
As a smoker I wouldn't really mind, where i had a smoke just as long as i could have one!! But maybe they could come up with a compromise maybe they could have a smokers corner somewhere in the bar or something, just to keep everyone happy..
I'm a smoker, but I see the point of a non smoker. Unless there's a definite area for smokers and non, so that there are no problems, then I wouldn't have any problems with smoking outside. The barstaff are there to serve you your drink, and no to take in your smoke, and I think it's less of a hit to smokers to just go outside or to another room, than it is for non smokers to have to put up with the smell and the later effects.
something is wrong when in the middle of a monsoon winter you and a swag of mates have to light up outside. people seem to manage elsewhere tho'. (california).
drinks and smokes are evils unto themselves, but so is the risk of losing your drink, personal stuff, primo seat with a primo veiw of the band. bar managers losing out big time with having to build totally seperate smoking rooms to still serve the public and the new laws. (north east america) even if you're in the big floor-plan high ceiling places.
not to mention myriads of other complications...
after house sitting my old family house, with my bed in the same place as where my sister was born, i couldn't even feel like smoking inside. it actually became part of the pleasure to step outside for the ciggie than chicken out with a crafty one. even when it rained (and especially when it drizzled!?)
we can smoke in our flat. but i'd still rather sit outside if theres kiddies around.
i can only remember starting smoking because it helped me to think when doing big mickey projects. i know what it is.
so i voted to stand in the rain.
//And as a smoker, I've voted for banning.
Good call mate. Why does every non-smoker think that we all want the remit to fail?
I smoke and i hate it when your clothes reek the day after a concert of BDO or whatever.
Ive gone for banning. or at least a seperate room?
what really gets me is how "absolute" the ruling has to be. I mean in the herald they were talking bout how a ponsonby cigar lounge was gonna have to be smoke free. That just proves how stupid the nz govenrment is, why would an asthmatic go to a cigar lounge? or any non-smoker for that matter?
I use to smoke casually but now i just smoke when i drink and thats how it was before i started smoking casually. and nearly everyone i know smokes or smokes when they drink, if you ban smokers from your bar you are bound to lose your numbers. people wana go to a club where thay can smoke. who wants to go in the cold and smoke? more people smoke when they drink than those that just spark up casually. Just make two areas of the clubs one side for non smokers and 1 for smokers. how hard can that be. i am pretty sure that if you make all bars smokefree those mars will lose out on people
It's kinda funny this whole thing - my friends who smoke have been saying "good idea, it'll help me to quit" while my non-smoking friends have been saying "that's discrimination, how terrible"!
all I have to say is that have to leave a venue because your eyes are watering sucks.
all having to fight your way through a sea of cigerette butts sucks
alas if people choose to smoke the nicotene dick of death it really shouldn't impact on others freedom to live cigarette free
i smoke and i agree with you. dont persecute us dude.
i choose to use my "Cancer Stick of Death" but when someone walks by i try my best to avoid them getting smoke in their face.
It makes me sick when parents lean forward into the pram with a smoke in their mouth. Poor kid. just becuase im happy with the harm being done to my body dosent mean others have to suffer.
Yes, yes, even if many of my friends are smokers, It'll be good to see that bill go through... Finally, my clothes won't stink profusely of smoke when at a pub rock concert...
Hey the bill has been passed so in 12 months time it will come into effect that no more smoking is allowed in public bars/places of alcohol. Dam man...a lot of debate now aye.
I think its a good idea but when I do decide to have a puff every now n then especially on the booze its going to be a hassle walkin in & out of the bar/club. Helps our health though, we need to take care of ourselves a bit more.
You know Heather, like the right to choose what kind of legally recognised relationship you want, and the right to choose to be able to go out and see a band and not return smelling of death, and the right to choose the world's oldest profession safely and so on.
So if I get lung cancer from second hand smoke, can I sue your ass? Once again the selfishness of smokers shines through. Poor little babies. Fucken wear it. Bars are so much nicer now and I appreciate coming home not smelling like smoke.
"government has taken away most of our choices so why support them"
Well, thats why we have a democracy, so when the Government does something you disapprove of, you can chose to support someone else. Personally, I do prefer not smelling like a rancid ashtray at the end of a nights bar hopping, but I still can't get used to going to a gig a having a big chunk of the crowd leave the bar to have a smoke every 30 minutes or so
Haha. Think no smoking in bars is tough. This US insurance company has told their staff to either quit smoking (anywhere, including at home) or quit their job. Next on the agenda, they've hired people to help their staff lose weight, but apparently they can't make fat people quit (although they'd like to). they also initially tried to help their staff quit smoking before this ban.
It appears they do health insurance, so I guess they know better than most that it doesn't pay.
