re-release CD's with bonus give away things

does re releasing piss you off? why not reward the keen fans who get the album first? or an incentive to attract new fans....or an evile tactic to get real fans to buy the album twice?

this REALLY annoys me GRRRRRRRRRR!
and someone tell me why ZM is advertising the new shihad/pacifier re-release?

Forums: NZ Music,

I am glad someone else feels like this. It always annoys me that I usually buy a CD pretty soon after it's released and then they re-release it with some cool extra shit but they can get stuffed if they think i am rebuying a cd i already own.

GRRRR... give the cool bonus shit to the people that actually make a CD a success in the first place. Make the limited edition stuff the first pressing.

i was soooo pissed when they did it with incubus morning view, and the goodshirt, and then the datsun etc etc etc.

does no one have a clue!

//someone tell me why ZM is advertising the new shihad/pacifier re-release? //

Because they've been paid to?????

And yes, it does seem unfair that the Johnny-come-lately's get the bonus good stuff whereas the people who bought the original release seem to miss out. BUT is WoMD in the re-release?

nope it six new "acoustic" tracks. (by acoustic i'm using the modern usage, Jon was sitting on a stool when he sang)

as for ZM, why bother? i think they would've played "pacifier" and maybe "comfort me"...in my mind why should they GET to associate them selves with pacifier? why not a station that has ALWAYS played their songs. but i'm conflicted it IS good to see a station promoting kiwi music....it'd make me happier if i knew they were going to keep it up

Pacifier's record company give money to ZM. ZM promote the CD. It's a business transaction not a kind gesture. It's not specifically about supporting New Zealand music, it's about selling ads.

stop it! you're all destroying my rant!!!!!

ZM usually play "run" somewhere around 7:30-50 every morning, well it comes and goes but for the last couple of months they've played it pretty consitantly and from the occasional gleems of talking i've picked up the announcers sound quite excited by it...

Yes. This discussion is happening at static ecstasy too. I'm against it because ... I got the damn album when it came out, and like the many rereleases of TGE I'm not going to keep buying copies everytime they pump out a new version. Contrary to somewhat popular belief though, this doesn't mean I'm not a fan. It just means that I think it's a shitty idea and I have negative 300 something dollars in my bank account. *SIGH*

Yeah, I really hate that shit. I was just bitching about that to a friend when I brought Killing Heidi's new one. I forgot that it was out, but by the time I remembered it had already been re-released with a bonus DVD with all their video clips on it. But something like Goldenhorse, whose album I brought straight away, got re-released with the bonus thing, and this presented to me the conundrum mentioned at the start of this topic. You wanna by the album as soon as it comes out, and you wanna tell all your friends to buy it 'cause it rules sooooo much, but you know they're gonnna re-release the CD with a bounus disc or whatever 'cause it's sold so well, so then you don't wanna buy the album first time round 'cause you wanna hang out for the limited edition, but then if you don't buy it first time sales will be dwon so they won't re-release 'cause they think no one likes it. So I agree, do the fancy limited edition thing first. Finger Eleven's new album that just came out that I just ordered comes with a Limited Edition live DVD. I reckon they should all do that. Or release them both at the same time. Like with Fear Factory or Slipknot, they did that for their albums, I think.

bad example but i like what linkin park did with their album....two versions

yeah, having meteora in 2 versions was a good idea.

ive been chatting bout this too....im totally over hearing the same songs but changed slightly....whats the point?? can they not think of something else to write? i must say linkin parks re release was ok....but there was no need for it.....their new album meteora is the bomb ...nice work!.................did anyone here go to the elemeno p cd launch party? it was the best!...........i won a crazy cd its called mareko is the future from it that the deceptikonz gave out...its just mareko and others rapping to songs that have already been put out there like p moneys scribe 2001 etc....it annoys me that they cant use their own stuff for promote mareko

So.... wait a while before you buy the album? one, the price goes down, two, the price goes down, three theres cool bonus stuff sometimes...

and you all seem to have the net, download portions of it while you wait to make your self happy... otherwise buy the record as soon as you can to obtain the bragging writes "I heard it first, I owned it first"... then miss out on the bonus stuff.

Everybody, just look at it from the people who makes da money's point of view(s).

Re-releases entice those that didn't buy the cd originally.
They get the truly die-hard fans to buy a near replicate cd which has minimal costs associated with it (ie no recording costs).
It's not enough of a biggie to stop fans buying their music in the future.

Why in god's name wouldn't you rerelease?????

i can see the economic point for doing it but it just pisses me off!
this is just really a blind rant on my point, i'm one of those poeple that go to midnight openings....buys the ltd editions and want EVERYTHING AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I also can understand why they rerelease (from an economical point of view) but as someone who buys albums as they are released (and not for the bragging rights of heard them first but rather because I just love to hear new music) why do they not do the rereleases with the bonus stuff but also make the bonus material (DVD / audio tracks) available in like an EP (or DVD single) format so that the people that have bought the album originally can get hold of the new tracks without having to spend another $30.

The additional production costs for the record company would be a cd case and a slip of packaging.

I guess if extensive improvements to the original cd became standard everybody would hold off buying the cd until the 'rerelease' came out.

Um, totally misread your post. My point still stands in general - but your idea is a very good one.

How is my example a bad one, and yet Linkin Park isn't???? Do they not both illustrate re-release frustration?
Re-mix albums though are a different bag altogether. Like Salmonela Dub's 'Outside the Dubplates', what was the need for that? Likewise with Linkin's 'Reanimation'.
I still reckon they should give you the bonus stuff first time, or else I like the idea of packaging it individually for the people who brought the album when it first came out.

I think he meant:
"this is a bad example, but i like what linkinpark did with...blah."

I don't mind remixed cds ... obviously you gotta be a pretty big fan of the album in the first place though. So although I like Outside the Dubplates, I would more than likely be disgusted by Limp Biscuits one (I think they brought one out a while back didn't they) and so-so about Reanimation.

As for the original bit about re-releasing cds ... it is annoying. I hung off buying The Alphabetchadupa for aaages since it went to number two in the charts or something. I thought it was a dead cert for a bonus disc but in the end one never came out (but on the upside I did get it for only 20 bucks!).

Oh, do'h.
So, who do we gripe to about these re-releases??? Who can we pressure???
