personally for me i wouldnt regard BLACK SABBATH (Although they nutured the sound) nor URIAL HEAP as metal, they are in an instance 'Progressive Rock' (note Black Sabbaths first album has a psychedelic sound, then second and third where typical early 70s rock)
also Gary Thain (uriah Heaps Bassist 1971-75) was born in Chrischurch and left NZ to join uriah heap in 1971. may he rest in peace.
you seem to be into your cradle sam. May i recommend a couple of bands to you (you may already have listened to some of their stuff they are...) Behemoth & Emperor, behemoth is abit less black metalish and more death-metal i reckon, Emperor are like cof abit darker. My friend was telling me that cof opened quite a few of Emperor's shows, they are worth the listen, trust me :)
L_S sabbath, uriah heep ...progressive rock??
hence my disclaimer re metal section in CD Store.
When I hear the words "progressive rock" I'm thinking... tangerine dream, van der graft generator, early genisis, floyd & porcupine tree. But then I didn't really want to disect the genre as if one could be better than another.
Its all perspective, I guess I lost interest with the guitar wanking & people taking "Venom" seriously & was looking for something more entertaining...

Slayer would never make me fall asleep - they're my favourite band. I find them so energising and invigorating. It'd be so cool if they came to BDO 04, but I doubt that'd happen.
I wonder if Metallica's actually going to go through with it this time - last time they cancelled cos they said there wasn't enough money as I'm sure all of you know.
Agree with you there. They're definitely out there on their own, I think there are some artists who cannot be categorised into any genre - Tool is one of these.
i have never heard haunted's music, but im gonna be a prejudice bastard and say they suck!!! cause i heard they are death metal... And TOOL is in the metal section of "real grooveys" so..... And slayer wouldn't be good to come to big day out cause they are better suited in small scary dark gig venaus....
//And TOOL is in the metal section of "real grooveys" so..
Well I always see Blink 182, Sum 41, NOFX, Good Charlotte, Ten Foot Pole, Me First and the Gimmes and such sound-alikes in the "Punk/Hardcore" section of the Sounds and other shops but does that make them punk now? Maynard has said a billion times Tool isn't a metal band, he even refused to have them play Opiate on metal stations because he was afraid they would lump them in with metal bands. Unfortunately they did. I don't know about anyone else but i have never seen Tool been put in a "metal" section in any store yet.
The Haunted all the way, they are awesome, how can you say they suck before actually listening to them prison, i think thats kinda stupid but what do i know, but your top 15 metal list is good, killswitch engage are great and so are opeth.
yup agree with prisonsex - but slayer would so be good at BDO, and Maynard said Tool isn't metal, so are you gonna take Real Groovy's word over Maynard's? The only reason Tool is in the Metal section at Real Groovy is cos it doesn't belong to any genre but they gotta put it somewhere don't they?
classic metal such as sabbath etc is all good and i am a fan of it, but i prefer todays metal, its heavier and more melodic in a sence, im talking mudvayne/killswitch/ill nino etc and i think its such a wicked way of evolving
tama, ill nino rule. Infact they're my second favourite band, after linkin park ofcourse. Nonbreed is a good guy, you shouldn't give him shit. He's right, Ill Nino are just like sepultura. Don't even try to argue with him, he's metal elite. He walks around in corpse paint and a cape 24/7. I sure as hell wouldn't mess with a fucker like that.
No I haven't heard Product.
I like new metal bands like MuDvAyNe and Kill Switch Engage and SOAD, but not nu-metal shit like Blindspott and Linkin Park. I haven't heard Ill Nino for ages, and I wouldn't really know who they sound like, but from what I remember they were okay.
okay so what's with all this talk about slipknot not being heavy? you may be right in some respects where the guitaring is concerned, but everyone seems to have omitted paying any attention to Joey's drumming.
And you're argument on that link still does not convince me that Slipknot and mudvayne and disturbed are nu-metal. Nu metal is definitely a mixture of rap, metal-type vocals, djing and mixing, I agree there, and Slipknot do mix and have a dj, but they don't use electronic-like samples, rather they use jungle beats (like at the start of eyeless) and samples that have a cool sound to improve on the atmosphere of a song. But the actual musicianship and style of guitaring/drumming etc is in no way nu-metal. Same goes for Mudvayne and disturbed etc.
I think the biggest problem with the "nu-metal" moniker is that the people arguing over which bands are "nu-metal" and which aren't, is that nu-metal is very uncool now, and people just use it as a catch-all for all the heavy music they don't like.
//Nu metal is definitely a mixture of rap, metal-type vocals, djing and mixing, I agree there, and Slipknot do mix and have a dj, but...
I agree with you, evilette - just because a band has certain aspects that are attributed to nu-metal, doesn't mean that that's what they are. After all, the whole nu-metal genre began because of bands that had aspects of heavy metal, but weren't strictly heavy metal any more.
//I think the biggest problem with the "nu-metal" moniker is that the people arguing over which bands...
Whoops, cutnpaste without proof-reading -
I think the biggest problem with the "nu-metal" moniker, and people arguing over which bands are "nu-metal" and which aren't, is that nu-metal is very uncool now, and people just use it as a catch-all for all the heavy music they don't like.
i think somewhere up there achilles said something along the lines of emotionally significant music being heavier because it has more impact. Fair enough, but since when were anger and hate not emotions? And more to that , they are also very significant emotions and actually have a lot of impact on people.
And the heavy I thought we were discussing was audio heavy, not emotional heavy. And any sort of boringness slipknot have with thier guitaring they make up for in percussion and sampling - and these instruments (percussion, drums, sample usage) can still qualify for heaviness, percussion is an extremely important part of music, it's not all about the quitars, lyrics and vocals.
And if we're saying anything that is a solid wall of noise is heavy, well I happen to think slipknot make lots of loud noise. And I also don't consider them radio friendly. Apart from the Axe Attack on the Rock, I've never heard slipknot on the radio (but then the Axe Attack also features Slayer - who you were comparing slipknot to as being 'radio friendly').
What is it with everyone and associating Slipknot and Heavy in the same sentence? The drummer may be skillful in some ways but I wouldn't call what he does heavy, it's more PERCUSSIVE than MUSICAL or heavy. Fear Factory has heavy drumming and NOT Slipknot. I don't see how some people can overlook the drumwork in Slipknot because overall it is a percussive sound. Now you're accusation of Nu-metal being a mixture of rap, metal-type vocals djing and mixing does not fase me. We've had a million Nu-metal topics on this site and quite frankly no-one really wouldn't care what it is but someone always keeps bringing it up so were back at square 1.
Apparently nu-metal is a "broad" genre. You say Slipknot don't use electronic samples but then you go to say //rather they use jungle beats (like at the start of eyeless) and samples that have a cool sound to improve on the atmosphere of a song. It is fact that to make a sample you need a sampler which is powered by electricity in order to work.
You go on to say //But the actual musicianship and style of guitaring/drumming etc is in no way nu-metal.
But it's not. The musicianship is very low par. 2 chord guitar riffs played on a detuned out of tune gat with unision of a bass and near-talented drumming. The song structures are washed up pop(verse/chorus/verse) song structure averaging 3 min. Not to mention atrocious vocals. I've give Corey Taylor credit for being able to sing in his side projects. Overall it sounds very nu-metal to me, and a carbon copy of an attempt to rip off old school metal like Slayer and Fear Factory.
//Same goes for Mudvayne and disturbed etc.
Mudvayne is comparable to Slipknot and I think it's clear what I think about Slipknot so the same goes for 'Vayne. and Disturbed are a perfect example of nu-metal.
