Was thinking last night as I was looking through the forums that I'm a bit out of sync with the majority of posters here, in terms of my tastes. I guess it's unsurprising that we don't all see eye to eye on what kind(s) of music we like, since New Zealand music isn't a genre or a sound...
Anyway, what stemmed this thrilling bout of reflection on the nature of these fora (haha) is something Grusome wrote about Kraftwerk at the BDO. He basically rated them really highly, and I thought "yeah, fuck yeah - Kraftwerk are by far the most influential and goddamn important act to ever touch this festival, head and shoulders above all others". But noted a lack of follow ups along those lines. In fact no one else even mentioned seeing them or what they thought of them, that I noticed.
Soooo... I guess I was wanting to bring this opinion to people's attention and see what resulted. What do y'all think?
-Maybe- Metallica are getting there. But probably not at all.

weren't kraftwerk opposite jane's addiction, meaning a difficult choice for the punter out to cover all bases?? i wanted to see kraftwerk, but ended up missing them for something on the mainstage - it takes a while to get between stages at bdo
Kraft-who?? Janes Addiction all the ...
Kraft-who??
Janes Addiction all the way!!
I geuss I wasn't thinking about ...
I geuss I wasn't thinking about whether they were enjoyable, more about whether they were influential. Hence the important thing.
I don't keep track of rock, tho, so maybe there are many more Janes knock offs than just that terrible Blind Melon band back in the day...?
I hadn't heard much of kraftwerk, only ...
I hadn't heard much of kraftwerk, only that robot song.
So I watched Janes Addiction instead
Shit, sorry, I'm being as bolshy as ...
Shit, sorry, I'm being as bolshy as most NZ music posters. ;) All this is strictly IMO and all that...
Oh dear people. Kraftwerk pretty much ...
Oh dear people. Kraftwerk pretty much invented electronic music along with having a major hand in the begginings of hip-hop (see Grandmaster Flash saying no one in NY in the early 80's could belive that this crazy funky music was getting made by a bunch of straight as German boys).
I thought it was very funny in some ways that most of the 'ravers' left the boiler room when Kraftwerk played. It would be like all the kids at a Tool/AudioSlave concert leaving when Black Sabbath or Led Zep hit the stage.
And dear Jet, yea Jane's Addiction were pretty fucking huge and 'underground' in their way. Probly not as 'important' as Kraftwerk in the great scheme but more personally so for the kids of the 90's....
Yeah, I was very much obsessed with ...
Yeah, I was very much obsessed with Jane's Addiction when I was at school, and admit that I'm at least curious to hear the new album... I'm still not sure what impact they've had musically. The kind of thing you describe with Kraftwerk, where whole forms of music were shaped by their existence.
'Summertime Rolls' is so dreamy and nice...
I went along to see Kraftwerk because ...
I went along to see Kraftwerk because everyone always refers to them as being really important and how they were the grandfathers of techno blah blah blah. What a load of ass. They didn't touch me in my squishy places at all. Admittedly, I'm not overly fond of most dance music anymore (I think I outgrew it when I stopped going to warehouse raves after 7th form), but four men standing on a stage playing with computers? Not exciting to me. And I have a niggling suspicion that at least some of the people who claim that they're the greatest are just really trying too hard to be hip and down with the programme rather than actually liking them.

Heh. Yeah, lots of workmates here in Melbourne went and saw them here and said the same kind of thing. Interesting about the hipster call... I decided not to go see them here in Melbourne because I decided their importance didn't mean I'd have a good time at their gig.

scuse the "in Melbourne" double ups, I wasn't paying attention to what I was writing - workmates went to BDO, I didn't cos I'd only heard of about 5 of the acts. i thought about the separate Kraftwerk gig and decided not to for the reasons stated...
Are you sure you're not just trying to ...
Are you sure you're not just trying to emphasize the fact that you're in Melbourne because that's what all the cool kids do as well?
People who only like "important" music make me sad. I say like something because it causes a reaction in you, whether it's raising your pulse and excitement levels like some songs can (current favourite 'exciting' track is "one more little death" by the dead souls), or because it makes you happy and want to dance dumbly, like Robbie Williams as mentioned in another forum. People shouldn't be ashamed or pretentious about their music choice (although I'm sure I'm both sometimes).

Yeah true. (except the Melbourne bit.. heh)
Look out.. I'm about to spin out entirely...
I love music in several ways, and one of those is the 'High Fidelity' kind of "where does this fit? who produced that? what else have they done?" way. Music fascinates me as a nerdy pursuit. The thing that is tricky is the way I consider/listen to music causes reactions in me. Music isn't just some sounds, it exists within the context of everything I've heard before and/or read about. So sometimes I'll be excited at the underlying concept or maybe context of something... and that -is- a matter of an emotional response, a liking of something, but it's probably quite different from, say, how thrilled I was to hear 'Billy Jean' while drunk at a 21st last weekend.
My point? It's not necessarily a hipster/pretense thing to be digging music in a different way from just whether it has a certain kind of energy or emotional resonance. I guess the trick is being able to maintain that it's a "different way" rather than "higher level" or some bollocks. A lot of people who do know a lot of rubbish about music do get wanky about it. But then a lot of people are steadfastly anti-illectual about music too, and are just wanky about that...
Gotta ramble on...
Oh I'm not on the attack at all, I was ...
Oh I'm not on the attack at all, I was just teasing about Melbourne. And I agree that there's more to music than just listening to it - I like to know about it as well, kind of like how after I see any movie, hate it or not, I'll go to IMDB and read all the trivia on it. I just worry about people liking something because it seems like the thing to do rather than for their place in history or whatever. For example, I know the Rolling Stones have been hugely influential and groundbreaking blah blah but most of their music, and so I'll totally give them that, but I don't want to listen to them. I personally think the Sex Pistols were talentless hacks as well, but I can recognise their lasting impact etc. Sometimes I'm so anti-hype (oh I'm so alternative and cool!) I miss out on good things - like The White Stripes for example - I heard all the "saviours of rock and roll" press before their music so I put them on my "don't listen to" list, and it wasn't til I got Elephant this year to review that I realised how fucking choice they actually are.
Cool, sounds like we are on the same ...
Cool, sounds like we are on the same wavelength then. I know that hype thing all too well. It's probably there with a band like Kraftwerk too. How could their music live up to their place in the Rock Snob Canon when you're actually listening to it!? But still, if it ain't your thing, it ain't your thing...
Umm, you don't have to like music in ...
Umm, you don't have to like music in order to appreciate the fact that it was/is 'imporatnt'. The word important kinda just means 'influential' in this instance. And no matter what your personal reaction to Kraftwerk is (and its pretty unemotional stuff, I mean they pretend to be robots for fucks sake) you can't deny their influence.
Futher more, NOT liking something just because its trendy is, to me, just as silly as liking it because it is. And I swear to god I love The Pixies and Radiohead because they move me, I went and saw KraftWerk (I only have one of their CD's and have only listened to it once) because as someone who LOVES all kinds of music and the History of music I felt I shouldn't pass up the chance to see a slice of History. Pretentious? I hope not, just curious man, just curious like the time a funny looking man asked me to follow him and I get the sweet....

I had intentions of watching Kraftwerk. I was gonna watch a lil Janes Addiction then split to the tent but I found Perry Farrell really compelling. I wasn't expecting to.
I heard lots of good reviews about Kraftwerk and I checked them out for a while afterwards. I like em...they've got a really cool website too

i can see how a lot of people can not enjoy the music of a band like kraftwerk, particularly those slanting towards the heavier perpective, but if you're a geeky electronic music junkie, like me, and so many others, to see live the band which practically invented your chosen musical persuasion is a marvellous thing... i would rank it as a similar experience to a rock music fan catching led zeppelin live,, and them still being as good (almost) as they would have been 30 years ago

Man all you fools missed out on WILCO! ...
Man all you fools missed out on WILCO! There was such a small crowd for them and they were fucking crazy. For all those that found the album over worked and a little tiring (i love it too, but its hard work) the live renditions were even more tripped out but more energetic and immediate.
The drummer had a giant set of strange percussion things, vibraphone, electronic drum pad (for kettle drum orchestral sounds) not to mention a beautiful Gretch looking kit. They had two keyboardists who both also played guitar (one of them had a Laptop and was smapling the band as they played and then backwards looping the shit, panning from left to right made me almost pass out was so intense and weird) and all this whilst playing very purty country/folkish songs.
Unlike any other band I have ever seen (also able to rock it up traditional style).

Not I.
But I had to leave the end of the set to go and watch the QOTSA. Then the sound fucked out and they had to play again later (as you all know.) The tragedy... I missed the end of Wilco. And now I listen to Wilco far more than QOTSA. These things happen, I guess.

If people like recent Wilco might be interested in checking out Loose Fur? Jeff Tweedy, Glenn Kotche and Jim O'Rourke having a bit of a jam around the time of the YHF sessions. It's not particularly great but some of the songs are definitely good.
I love Jeff's voice. Made me realise how little I like Jim O'Rourke's by comparison.

I found the documentary very interesting and entertaining, Batbat. The footage of the recording of the album was very cool - seeing the songs in different forms etc. The Live footage. The drama, the joy, within the band.

The bit where Tweedy abruptly walks out of the meet & greet after his solo show was priceless. And the whole "subset of heavy metal drummer" argument was like something out of The Office. Poor Jay Bennett.
