Oh, that's sad. I used to have my traditional post-soccer hamburger at Lambton Quay Maccers (get fit, then undermine the effort with an evil quarter-pounder), where Rob would nearly always be getting refill after refill of McCoffee. He'd sit in the corner, staring into nothingness, oblivious to the various glances and giggles from kids out for a 'Happy' Meal.
He'd obviously had enough of it all. RIP indeed.

oh man, I'm late with this one, but yes, I do remember rob enjoying a maccas icecream or two when I was living in welly, (and I just admitted to eating maccas), and was thrown out of my comfort zone for sure. RIP rob

i find it very interesting reading stuff like this cuz once, he had a job and was probably quite happy doing it. he had stories to tell, things to pass on; yet to most of us he was just the dude with the growth on his forehead.
dark days aside, has anything ever been published or filmed on the lives of homeless people and their backgrounds?

I have a vague memory of someone trying to live like a homeless person on some "yoof" TV show I think - was it Havoc? Hmmm. Or maybe it was an article in one of the student magazines. I'm sure I saw soemthing on TV once, because there were a bunch of homeless people having a bbq in Albert Park. Does this jog anyone else's memory?

He was great, i'm sad he died, really guttered in fact.
I used to walk past him almost every morning on my walk up to school from lambton quay. I saw him twice on Friday - it feels weird knowing that I won't see him again.
very nice articals in the paper as well, highly respectful [even if, IMHO, they did take the 'dying in the gutter cliche' a bit far]
robert was an unbelievably sweet, and ...
robert was an unbelievably sweet, and well-spoken man. he used to walk with me when i was walking the dog, and asked after my mother, who was the practise nurse for his doctor. i guess id known him since i was about 14, at least. 13 years...
about a month ago i ran into him and we had a catch-up. i mentioned i was working for the government. he beamed at me. "they get everyone sooner or later. but well done."
i got fucking angry when i saw the article because it barely touched on the reality of a man who was known by a whole city, who impacted everyone, even if it was just to make them a little more aware of the comfort of their own lives. it was all "the guy with the growth died in a gutter". the implication that the woman who he asked to call an ambulance didnt even stick around to keep an eye on him just made me shake.
the thing that makes it ok for me is that for the last 3 days everyone ive run into has said "hey. did you hear about rob? sad, isnt it."
his absence touches people as much as his presence did. thats pretty special.
