God i'm hanging out for my copy........ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Thanks to a good friend ;) its been fun listening to all the e.p, leaked demos, final demos, and now the final album, some of the songs have totally changed during this production period with a few merging into single songs, its been throughly interesting.
I dont know about the art work tho..........'they' say there are two covers so I hope the second cover is better then the golden head.
This band rules, thank god 4 afros.
Go to the Comatorium for all good info : http://www.thecomatorium.com

Excellent, this record is my 2003 favorite...Awesome
Nothing to say, Perfect.
Last year was QOTSA, now it's MV.
Haven't listen to it yet??
Go check it now, NOW!!!

Amazing album. Totally mindblowing. Loved it since I heard the premasters. Its got that groove to it you know. These guys could do any style of music and make it amazing. This album even has motown influences. Oh and shit before I forget. Did I mention they have still have their afros. Omar smells like onions too. Any singers out there that can sing like Cedric? "Its not over till the Tremulant sings".

Just got it.........fucken great.
But that is some seriously bad art work.

Real Groovy, pre ordered.
You are in for a treat.

P.S. sparta who?

http://www.tlbt.com ]

cheers.
I gots me some shopping to do.

damm its good. even tho there are loads of flavours from past masters, I can't help feeling 'bye-bye retro cover rock'. thank god.

my only disappointment is the constant knee jerk "sparta bagging" that surrounds this release. me - I'm a fan of both and atdi.

Hahahah Dust

That wasn’t bagging, that was harmless tomfoolery.
Im stoked that ATDI broke up…the result: two fantastic bands that scratch my constant itch for emo weirdness.
But to be honest I do think that the Sparta release was a little less progressive in its thinking (then Deloused..) and when I listen to Wire Trap Scars its hard for me to not hear ATDI (exp Wards vocals of course).
To me The Mars Volta seem to be pushing things further, trying to escape the old ‘Fugazi wannibie’ label ATDI was smacked with, and they do it well.
The Mars Volta have just offered me (an ATDI junkie) a far more mature depth, a progression of what ATDI was, kinda like how J.K.Rowlings ‘Harry Potter’ books just get larger and deeper as her audience matures.
I know you shouldn’t compare bands doing different things but these guys cant escape what they came from, they will always be compared, like brothers.

Lots of love

very well said. especially the 'itch' - perfect diagnosis of part of my disease.

i've seen the sparta comment elsewhere a fair bit, so yours was in good spirit i thought! it's all a bit like a divorce with the kids picking a favourite out of mum and dad.

i think i feel a little worried that people will compare the 2 albums (and therefore bands) together. i suspect one has the 'cultural currency' and will stand up in every hardcore conversation for months to come. the other will be relegated until the next album comes thru. to be expected i guess.

three great bands, three great albums + new sparta AND new QOTSA out early next year. holy shit we're on the upswing again ( 10 years since siamese dream and 12 since badmotorfinger). finally.

hang on, maybe we're peaking. sheeeit.

Cicatriz E.S.P. is still my fav song, it hasn't changed at all since the demos, gotta love those mow town organ licks..fantastic, this song reminds me alot of Physical Graffiti by Led Zeappelin and some of the live jamming of 'the song remains the same' in the film by the same name (listen to 5:35 mins into Cicatriz E.S.P. and onward), gigantic song lengths, you have to be a pretty amazing band to hold your audience for 12mins on one song, and these guys have got me hooked.

Cant wait to here this cd, my copy of relationship of command has been fuckin thrashed and sparta was a bit to chilled for me, even though they were wicked live, bring it on!

You know you listen to ATDI too much when you own 2 copies of ROC and both of them starting to skip crazily. The Mars Volta album is amazing. I'm feel that they should have kept Concertina on there though. Matt you know what I'm talking about. They have so much soul. Wish their were people around Wellington interested in doing this kinda stuff like ATDI and MV ;-)

Jay

I stand corrected (check link), this review has some good points to make.

Hmmm...
I think I like the album anyway.
But I also think I like the Sparta album more (I know, I know - they're different things, etc...)

To paraphrase the review... Pitchfork are not really fun either. I used to follow, but they are so uptight and cancerous.

However, FWIW, I had a purple patch with Wiretap Scars that lasted for weeks. And it was a full album playlist everytime (trk 2-12, then back to 1 to close, of course). But I'm not feeling like I want to listen to this album as a whole (maybe its too early on).

If I was able to recombine ATDI, I'd use a dash more Sparta now. No doubt I'll change my mind in next 3 minutes. Digging that 1+ 2 trks right now.

I love this bit:
"The other band often evoked in The Mars Volta press is Santana. That's just offensive. Omar and Cedric's last names are Rodriguez-Lopez and Zavala, right? They use bongos? They must sound like Santana!"

Haven't listened to the album enough yet to form an opinion.

Well some of it does sound like Santana. Listen to Cicatriz. Heaps of the Omars guitar runs are pretty close to some of what Santana does. I wouldnt say they were influenced by him but the Spanish style of playing is very similar.

what's with the Santana name drop thing? Is this some kind of reviewers in-joke? Dave Grohl's new band with members from Slayer and Motorhead is apparently similar to Santana too ... suuuure.

Dave Grohl's thing isn't really a 'band', its a 80s metal style album called 'Probot' with guest singers from 80s metal bands. But might be performed live with members from Pantera as the backing band.

The one thing i like about Pitchfork is that they usually wack the stuffing out of alot of the stuff I like which I find nice and leveling when trying to understand if I like the album for the hype or the content.
Pitchfork are into alot of obscure bullshit (and pride themselves on this), but i kinda enjoy their honesty and scathing reviews.
I look forward to the day when Pitchfork tears strips of Two Lane Blacktops first album, it will be an honour to be licked by their whip.

It got a 6.1. The review pretty much talks about how the album doesn't capture the energy of the live act which is total bs. It captures it well enough. The reviewer talks shit pretty much.

I'll never get sick of ATDI. I just can't. I have some new live vids of them without their afros from the I/O Casino era. They still rock and ooze punk rock. Cedric still moves like a madman and Omars guitar playing is still loose as.

Mars Volta live shows aren't as exciting to watch. A lot of the songs live are just too jammed out. Cedric has the whole drugged out Jim Morrison thing going on while Omar is pretty much doing his Hendrix/Santana styles and shaking his ass a bit more. Their new live drummer is amazing to watch. He has all these great fills and has got his own groove going on. He looks like an older Lenny Kravitz. The keyboardist is their partner from DeFacto, Ikey. I love the whole ethnicity thing in the band.

I've been listening to this MV album for quite a few months now. I agree with the review about them having these long parts in the songs with just lots of Spanishesque guitar effect parts. And you can usually tell when they are gonna bring the song back up. Its still amazing though.

Although I think I'll go back to my ATDI for a while. I never seemed unhappy with that brother. He was always good to me.

//I look forward to the day when Pitchfork tears strips of Two Lane Blacktops first album

big call mr thrasher. Do people really care ask yourself? Will it last that long? Is it already dead? fuck the datsuns are great!!!! am i that good? I mean these are things we ask ourselves everyday. Maybe you should too. Might add some perspective.

In other words. Phil/ Mr stix is really cool. i hope to talk to him more.

I have faith in Two Lane Black Top. Pitchfork WILL rip the shit out of them!!!

And most likely be wrong.

//I look forward to the day when Pitchfork tears strips of Two Lane Blacktops first album, it will be an honour to be licked by their whip.

That was a joke Andoru a quite honest dig at myself and my own band.
I live in the knowledge that a lot of people consider that what me and my band do is ‘throw away’ and ‘trend hoping’, that doesn’t stop me enjoying what I do and continuing to do it.
Your negative and aggressive comments make me sad, and reminded me why I had stopped posting on NZMUISC.

Goodbye

Red D., IF the rumour is true and you tour with Pacifier, and IF the rumour is true and you play in Dunedin, it will be an honour to listen to your trend-hopping music. True enjoyment for me comes from a band's true enjoyment and commitment to their own sound no matter what others say. Hope to see you down there mate. Don't stop posting, reach out and touch somebody's hand make this world a better place if you can - go Jason Gunn.

TLBT is throw away!!!!!!! (maybe I don't know you well enough to joke.......)

...but you'll keep posting on NZMUSIC though aye?
;)

Most of us are intelligent enough to recognise flippancy when we see it. A sense of humour is a terrible thing to lose if y'know what I mean.

Jokes are great, I love jokes, I pride myself on my sense of humour. But I can tell the difference between a joke and a bitter remark. I think some people just need to GROW UP, GET A LIFE, AND STOP CRITISIZING OTHER PEOPLE ON THE WAY THEY LIVE THEIRS.
But yeah, The Mars Volta rule!

PS: Jimi, we'll see you in Duniden! ;)

Quad. I love you, and I haven't even met you. That's a song right? Anyway, I look forward to grooving and - hopefully - meeting TLBT at the gig.

Andoru,
we have similar tastes in music-HDU, Suka, The Skeptics, etc, but I can't believe you'd dismiss TLBT so easily. They're one of the few bands I get excited about and any comments about them mimicking The Datsuns is just bullshit. TLBT kicks The Datsuns ass.

People in greenhouses shouldn't throw stones Andoru. I mean people could very easily say that Rawer are just a poor Bailterspace clone could they not.

My back is up.

No elvis we dont have the same tastes in music. It is a little bit bigger than that. Sure i like those 3 bands you listed. But you cant put me into a little box with just three bands.

Look the only reason pip and matt are being such premadonnas. Is because i struck an insecurity. They shouldnt give a shit! I was saying far worse to Phill and he was laughing and returning the shit. Jesus cant people laugh anymore? It is all about the reaction.

Isn't rock and roll supposed to be about having fun? and not being all precious about the artistic merits? Isnt that what it is against?

> Isn't rock and roll supposed to be about having fun?

bro, you don't strike me as the kind of person capable of having fun.

well you must have the wrong perspective of me!

Actually, he's quite the funny bastard.

> well you must have the wrong perspective of me!

maybe so.

> well you must have the wrong perspective of me!

so why go and give this impression of a grumpy person with an axe to grind in here? if you are a fun-lovin' person, maybe you should let that creep into your nzm posts? maybe peoples attitudes of you wouldn't be so polarizing. just a thought.

Vietnow. I think my posts are fun loving. haha. They deffinitly are not grumpy. They are good for a giggle. I think people who know me and read them have a laugh. but thats my perspective.

Vietnow, if you read between the lines a bit you'll find that most of the time Andoru is taking the piss and is far from grumpy. I find his posts on NZM amusing and his strong opinions on what he likes refreshing. (Hopefully he'll kill Jack Johnson for me if I keep talking him up).

// Isn't rock and roll supposed to be about having fun? and not being all precious about the artistic merits?
andoru I think you've managed to miss the point and contradict yourself across several topics.

goddam thats a lame joke andoru. you'll have many beers to buy Mr Caution and Co now...

well done teina!! Look a little harder and youll find more. Look it is all a joke cant you see?

well yes I can see that in this particular topic, but your history on the site hasn't alway been one of the good natured jokester. It's no wonder people took your words at face value and got pissed off.

But whos perspective are you talking about? To some i could always have been regarded the good natured jokster?

But yeah I understand. I mean hell it is a sad time when people cant laugh at themselves.

But ok. Ill stop. Sorry matt and p ip. I was trying to be funny.

i love andoru. he's a funny guy!
