Opening the latest Rip It Up I turned to the section labelled "The 50 Most Important People In NZ Music" only to be highly insulted. Apparently the ZM Network & Classic Hits do more for NZ music than all of the B-Net stations combined!!! WTF.
Now I know that sometimes B-Net stations are lacking when it comes to rock content, but at the particular sation I work for this is changing quite drastically and quickly. Most groups(not all) that make it to commercial radio get their start through the B-Net stations. Most of the poeple I work with take active parts in the music of Wellington. Chances are if you've done a gig @ Indigo in the last 2 years I've helped you with it, or light your band. Now as well as promoting dark-end music in Wellington, I'm also doing lighting for other people's gigs as well as my full-time job of producing & co-hosting Active's breakfeast show & still doing part-time work @ Indigo. This is not blowing my own horn, anyone who knows me will know that I'm not like that, BUT I challange the other stations to show me someone who takes as active a part in NZ music.
We have 112 DJ's on our station who proactively source & promote NZ music - other stations have ?
NOTE: These are my personal opinions not those of Radio Active. I am an individual and as such have my own opinions.

i think it is important to encourage those "other" stations in our direction though.
KUDOS to all B-net supporters

True that. I love it when we get calls from the listeners about what they wanna hear, or just to call to say "that's a dope track". It's even better when it's a local act. 64 out of 144 CD's on our playlist are NZ and most of them get more air time than internationals - mostly by DJ choice or requests. This is all NEW music.

they are not deemed commercial stations?
is this cause they don't pay as much apra
or cause they don't pay the same leases on the feq. they broadcast on
i dunno - feel free to educate us forge
We're not seen as commercial because ...
We're not seen as commercial because most of the B-Net is made up of University stations. We're seen as being there to help & teach people who are interested in broadcasting. All the DJ's, bar those that play every day(3), are volunteers, there to learn more about music. We also have a limit of how many minutes of adds can be in an hour - I believe it's 6 minutes, therefore we have less income than other stations. We don't get giant commercial sponsers to pour money into us so we can cover the country side with insidous logos and eye-sores of billboards.
Mostly as I see it we take pride in our stations and pride in the music we play. Every day I'm amazed by the wealth of music knowledge our DJ's have and it shows. As far as I know the B-Net are amongst a handful of stations that the DJ's can have an input in what is played, about 50% playlist the rest is our choice. People sometimes critise us(B-Net stations) in that we don't talk much, personally if I'm listening to the radio I wanna hear good varied music with a flow & not listen to 20mins of adds & some git talking C^@p I don't care about.

I wish this was the case where I come from. Our local B-Net station plays hardly anything local and it all pretty much sounds the same. I crave variety and wish there were a larger variety at our local station that would reflect the local scene and not play pretty same-same dub all the time (not that I don't like dub, I just like good dub. Not all dub). But it looks as though my local station might be the odd one out here! I've heard great things about RDU as well ...

the Vodafone b Card???? um I guess your talking wellington and I'm talking Auckland?
Perhaps the primary point of difference ...
Perhaps the primary point of difference between commerical radio and the b-net stations is that in the case of commerical radio the ove-riding imperative is to turn a profit to return to the shareholders. This can only be done by playing lots of commercials. You only get lots of commericals to play if you have lots of listeners of the particular demographic the advertiser is interested in.
As far as I understand it the b-net stations (with the probable exception of the Generator in Hamilton) do not need to generate this level of advertising as they are not required to return profits to shareholders in the same way that commercial stations are. They do need to generate income in order to continue to exist hence the presence of commercials to some degree.

big stu. what up!
and would those b-net stations have the same costs as the commercial ones? or do they get there hands held in that regard?
which was my original question
ciao
They do not have the same costs as ...
They do not have the same costs as commercial stations, because most of the on air staff are volunteers, many of whom bring in their own music. I think all of the B-Net stations have some paid employees, such as manager, PD and tech person, and most find a need to pay a breakfast DJ so they can have a consistent (and awake) start to the day. Some have the benefit of accomodation provided by their uni, which also keeps the cost down. All are involved in promotions to some degree - both as a result of being in the B-Net, which brings in national advertising, and through their local efforts.
I don't think there are any fully funded B-Net stations any more, and some are pretty much stand alone in terms of their financing: Radioactive and Bfm are probably in this category.

and maybe zm network does more for NZ music than the B net cos they reach more people than the b net - thus filling the ears of 'normal' (boring) new zealanders with sony funded rubbish - that happens to contain elements of a new zealander(s).
now thats entertainment!

I love RDU.
The best thing I've ever done is switch from listening to Channel Z to RDU.
The presenters don't fuck up that often, and theres hardly ever any ads.
They play various genres, and right now they're playing the D4.
I love the hip hop show on thursday nights.
My only gripe is that the playlist during the day is too small, and they repeat the same song too often.
