It's probably just me, but it seems like there are heaps of whiney, ingrate nzmers at the moment.
What I mean is, the nzmusic admin provide us with this fucking brilliant site, yet, we all seem to whine about something or rather,
like pop-up adds (which arent on here, but hypothetically speaking...), or the new post-reply box.
I mean, if having pop-adds mean that nzmusic.com could/can stay on the net longer or provide the admin, with a bit of financial backing for the site (or their own pockets), then I would have no objections. I mean, I know pop-ups are annoying as fuck, but if it helps this site in the long-run, then it's no biggie.
Arghh, I dunno what i'm on about, but I guess i'm saying we should be thankful to Dust, Teina, Joe etc, for this brilliant website...
And look at the good shit on here, instead of being whiney little bitches.. :P
End Rant..

Hold down the shift key when you click the link (or in fact any link) and the "reply box" will open in a new window ... still not as convenient, perhaps, as before but it works OK for me.

some fun shortcuts and tricks:
ctrl-w : close an IE window or a windows explorer window
windows-e : open a windows explorer window
windows-f : search for a file
windows-f : minimise all windows on screen
pressing the ctrl key and clicking on programs open in the start bar allows you to select multiple open docs, so you can close a whole bunch of stuff at the same time
selecting text, holding down ctrl, and dragging the text to another part of the page will copy said text without saving it to memory, so you can have something stored in your copy/paste thing *and* copy other texty stuff
shift-insert is the same as ctrl-v (paste)
alt-tab shifts between stuff that is open, and alt-shift-tab shifts backwards through
alt-enter expands windows media player to fullscreen and back
i know a shitload of shortcuts so if there's anything you'd like to know ... er *cough* i mean i hate kompooters! thay are dum!!! onlee nerds and nerdy nerdlings are nerdy enough to nerd out on those nerdy things!!!!

You're so not wrong. When I got to visit my parents (who only have IE) I don't even bother trying to read forums, or use google. It just seems wrong.
It's like the ultimate in low calorie browsing, just use the scroll wheel to glide down the recent posts, and apply gentle pressure and they open behind.

my pet ergonomic peeve at the moment is the location of the backslash. I'm doing most of my writing in latex these days, and the fact that the location of the $/backslash$ is different on all the keyboards I use. /bfseries It's really annoying.

netscape is just evil, plus statistically it's really not doing well - NS only counts for 2.4% of hits to my company's website, and it's getting weaker ... interesting to note that as netscape gets weaker mozilla and opera get stronger, wheras there is very little change to IE (which still dominates at a freaky ass 96%)

Netscape 6 was a dog. Netscape 7 is much improved, but doesn't really offer anything over and above mozilla or opera. Currently, I think opera, mozilla or netscape are better than IE (mainly cos I love tabbed browsing). It would be interesting to see how dominant IE was if it didn't come bundled with windoze.
I was suprised to note checking the logs of one of the sites I maintain (which has a fairly academic audience, who I thought might be MS snobs) that it's 92% IE.

I love the tabbed browsing but I was put off Mozilla because of its load times and it crashed like heck on me. Though that was on my Win98 platform, haven't tried it yet in my Win2000 environment. Phoenix is nice because it loads a heck of a lot faster than Mozilla but you lose some bells and whistles. I can't remember what it has been renamed to now.
Been meaning to try Opera but nothing has motivated me enough to do so.
phoenix has been renamed Firebird. ...
phoenix has been renamed Firebird. It's a web browser only, no chat, email or address book. All the browser features of official Mozilla (tabbed browsing, pup-up blocker) are included, as is the ability to customise the toolbar like IE. And it uses less RAM and loads pages faster than Mozilla.
Firebird is eventually going to be the offical browser of the Mozilla project and it's cousin Thunderbird will be the official email client. The all-in-one package that is currently called mozilla will probably still be developed but it won't be the main development effort.

the adware/purchase price has always put me off trying opera. Assuming you have a quick-ish machine, NS7 loads quick enough and is stable. It's fairly hungry though...

I find NS7 a wee bit slower than opera, particularly when using the back and forward buttons, at which opera is blazingly fast. I'm totally tuned out to the opera ad now, which has been the same one for the last two months (SmileCity.co.nz!). I actually filled out all the demographic info to 'tailor my advertising wants', and I think this is the only ad that slips into my requirements, hence its unchanging state.
And at home I use a slightly, ahum, modified version of opera.
NS7 has a habit of contributing to system-wide meltdowns (when I'm using half a dozen apps at once), for, as you say, it does like to suck up whatever resources are handy. The only thing I've found opera doesn't agree with is flash, which sends it into a sulk occasionally, but it doesn't tend to take other apps down with it like NS (or IE) do when they spit the dummy.
// system-wide meltdowns I've been ...
// system-wide meltdowns
I've been enjoying a period of unprecedented stability. I haven't had any problem with NS melting down, although I tend to have a lot of apps open at once. SPSS (which is pretty unstable anyway) is crashing every time I open my mail program at the moment, but it's not taking anything else down with it.

Oddly enough (or perhaps not), I've quite long discussions with various geeks over the years over various shortcut keys, and their usefulness or otherwise.
The one that gets me is in Flash: CTRL-F6 (Delete Keyframe). It *kills* me. On my big ergo keyboard I have to stretch my hand full span to get to both keys at once (I'm a diehard one mouse hand one keyboard hand when working in graphics apps). This particular bit of shortcut mania has been central to a couple of loud, laughable discussions at parties I've been to over the last few years. "CTRL-F6! Ahahaha. Classic."

i can see how it'd be an arse on an ergo keyboard, i hate those things, the keys are all like ... split! what's with that??
still, technique, perhaps hit the ctrl key on the right and let your pinky deal with the f6? i'm not sure where they're placed on the ergos, but that's probably how i'd cope with a regular kb, it's not too bad a stretch and it means you can look all magic and wavy handy doing it :)

that's the way I do it now. It does look quite groovy. There's a few shortcuts on that side of the keyboard that get the quick right-CTRL action now: CTRL-J (page properties in dreamweaver) and CTRL-SHFT-J (selection properties, likewise) are the two that get the most of a workout.
My current fave is the four finger shortcut is CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-G (snap to grid).
But what I really want is the five finger shortcut.
CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-WINDOWS-X = launch multimedia techno entertainment module.

// i understand it's not very good at reading css?
I find it supports CSS better than NS4 and NS6 (which freak out entirely when you turn off javascript). Maybe older versions of Opera weren't as good as handling it, but v6 and v7 are pretty close to what you'd see in IE.

//Oddly enough (or perhaps not), I've quite long discussions with various geeks over the years over various shortcut keys, and their usefulness or otherwise.
Back in the days of decent word processors (wordstar) and real spreadsheets (visi-calc) we didn't have these new-fangled mousey things ... the keyboard was all we had as an input device for the good old 286 .... everyone knew keyboard shortcuts for everything ... and virtually none of them made sense! Nothing so logical as -F-S to save a file or stuff like that. I've forgotten them all now (-K-D sticks in my mind for some reason) and to be honest I tend to use the mouse for stuff I shouldn't ... it is quicker to press -P to print something rather than move your hand to the mouse and then move the mouse and click. But there you go.
I do notice that real touch typists who work with WP a lot tend to use only key-strokes and become frustrasted when they need to use their mouse.
