Chess is a great game

if not the greatest ever. I always thought that chess was stupid or for geeks etc. it's amazing. It never gets boring. It's even better because I have always been fascinated with war and strategy.

Forums: The Bar,

acording to americans baseball is the great game... I counter that with cricket is the great game...

but maybe morals aside, war is the greatest game?

Play chess. It will build your mind up, and that will help you in ALL areas of your life, even your cricketing career.

I reckon chess is a great game, and cricket is a great sport.

We've just taught Milo the rules of chess. So if you're up for a game Saul, we've got a 3 year old who's always up for a game...

I'd probably get murdered.

I suck a chess, but I find any mentally stimulating games interesting (but don't quote me on that).

I played online chess a few times and got my arse kicked... does anyone else have online chess? should be in the free windows games if you have it.

hmm, stink I only seem to have internet checkers, well thats a fun game too... simple but fun :)

I like Chess...but I always loose...

Minus the second O.

//I like Chess...but I always loose...

similar story here will, i prefer draughts......

actually chess and draughts is an ideal game to watch at 1.15am on mornings when sleep is impossible

I'd like to voice my opinion that Chess sucks. Relative to any other game I know, it is the one which is most oriented to your skill level. Chess becomes boring because people learn and practise it too much.

Thus, beyond a fairly basic level, you can only play games with people approximately as good as you are. You waste people who are slightly worse than you, and get wasted by people that are better than you. Put simply, there is too little chance and too little variation. Perhaps if you find a friend or two who are broadly similar you might have fun for a little while, but man it gets dull.

The only way I found to make chess more interesting was to make up successively more innovative rules. Some of you may have played speed chess (ie 5min total time limit for the game, timed with a clock), or team chess, or nuclear chess, or alice (in wonderland) chess. I progressively concocted rules for team alice nuclear speed chess etc., and eventually got bored with that and gave up.

I love it. I played against Dad as a kid and our battles are some of my fondest memories :)

However I have been usurped by my 10 year old brother. He set up his primary school chess club and when I dared to play him he beat me in 4 moves. Ah, the shame.

Four move mate is pretty easily avoided. If he tries it again you should be able to kill him. If it doesn't work it rapidly becomes a very poor opening.

Yeah, the problem was I hadn't played for a few years so was totally oblivious to any tactics. We played another game about 6 months later, which I beat him in. We have one every so often (when we have regained our dignity from losing to our older/younger bro) and currently it's 2-2.

Updates to follow.

I got the 'Most Improved Player' certificate in primary school chess.. those glory days will never come again!
