.com question

this may seem really daft, but I just don't know.

when someone buys/creates a .com address where does the money go? if you go through a web company thing they charge you for the .com (.net, ,co,nz or whatever) and the fee for server space, right?

But what if I was to set up my own server? one, how would I go about getting a .com address, and two who would you pay it to, is their some internet overlord or something?

its just a general interest thing, I currently have no intention of setting my computer up as a server, I wouldn't know where to begin...

Forums: The Bar,

You pay whatever registrar, and they have to pay ICANN. ICANN have a list of authorised registrars where you can register .com and .net domains.

You're only paying for the registration of the domain name, not for hosting or anything else. That is seperate and you can pay someone else to host your website.

(i think its ICANN, could be some other acronym.)

to register a .nz domain, www.iserve.co.nz seem pretty good.
