ahaha. so they had a vote over lunch at the satellite media office.

Where were the Shihad videos 'Home Again', 'Wait & See', 'My Minds Sedate', 'Debs Night Out', & 'Stations'? Bic Runga 'Suddenly Strange'? Crowded House 'Four Seasons in One Day' & 'Private Universe'?

The panel of experts were apparently the hosts and the rest of the production crew. What a cop-out. They should have opened it up to the public, and then there could be no quibbles.

//They should have opened it up to the public, and then there could be no quibbles.
your kidding right?
yes there was a couple of inclusions I did wounder about...
Bee Bo being one of them, there are a lot of extreamly good animated vids about that I think are better than that one..... if you haven't seen it is is on this weeks squeeze
suit was another that had me scratching my head, along with supergrooves can't get enough, it's a good song but the vid was it really that good?

I think public vote would have done much better. Of the videos in the 15, I think only 5 or 6 deserve to be there.

I reckon the list was about 50% accurate. There were a few too many recent videos that have a lot of buzz surrounding them now, but that I seriously don't think will stand the test of time. Like, I really doubt that "Clav Dub", "S.U.I.T." or "Exit To The City" would appear on such a list in ten year's time.
(I was going to include "Who The Hell Do You Think You Are" on that list, but I think tha t deserves some kind of recognition as NZ's first sexist titty video. It, er, paved the way for MC Unique's lesbians-in-the-shower vid.)

But I think Space did a good thing by dedicating a whole show to excellent NZ music videos. Too often we don't even consider the video, and just think about the music. But there have always been really interesting and innovative music videos coming out of New Zealand, and television is exactly the right place for it to be celebrated.

lesbians? Or naked girls making out with each other!?

// and television is exactly the right place for it .... funny i always thought that videos are soooooooo much better on the radio.
But seriously, space should get back to "his is the song, this is who sung it ,wee bit of interesting background / history"... and cut the crap.

// lesbians? Or naked girls making out with each other!?

I use "lesbians" in the poetic, not literal sense. Let us not split hairs.

// funny i always thought that videos are soooooooo much better on the radio.

When I wrote that TV is the right place for showing top music video selections I had in mind a feature that RollingStone magazine did on the top (50? Or maybe even 100?) music videos of all time. A magazine can go into more detail with interesting behind the scenes stories, a radio documentary could do similar, and a web site could even have the same information, but television is really the best place to present a selection of the top 15 New Zealand music videos.

But you knew that, right?

For fucks sake! Every time a music clip comes on involving hot titties some chicks scream sexist! I bet u didn't complain during the hen's night strip show!!!!! No one shall take away titties!!!!!

Its always controversial whenever you do a countdown. We were always aware that there was a bias towards modern videos but we felt that was because they have got better through the years - because of the introduction of New Zealand on Air funding, because directors became more adept at utilising that money, because of the reduction in cost of technology.

Our panel of experts were people in the music industry - record company people, video makers, magazine writers and all sorts of people. We considered opening it up for public vote but we felt that it may become a bit of a vote for popular bands and it would be about the music not about the video.

Of course you're all not going to agree. I'd love to see a whole lot more suggestions and arguments for videos that SHOULD have been in the list Maybe we could play some missed ones in future shows.

Mitchell
Space Producer were u on the panel of experts? if so y did u pick wat u did ??

Yep...it's hardly a scientific process...a lot of e-mails went around between people, then the Space team sat down and tried to collate it into some sort of order. I like to think of Top whatevers as discussion points, a starting point..everytime I see one I know that I normally disagree with it and start composing my own version in my head. I think we played 15 bloody good videos and there were another 50 or so that could have just as easily got in there.
