I'm hitting RocknRoll saturation point.

Is it just me, or are there too many rocknroll / thrashy rock / loud bands around now? Don't get me wrong - some of them are really great (Mother Guru, 1QA, Marystaple), but there are a whole lot now who are worthy, but just kinda - well - they all just start dissolving into each other.

I'm not really complaining - I'll just go to fewer gigs. It's just an observation. I'm all rocked out.

Forums: NZ Music,

//(Mother Guru, 1QA, Marystaple),
DISCLAIMER: This isn't an exhaustive list of the loud / rocking / rolling bands I like. Just the first examples that sprang to mind.

Im over the rock'n'roll sound too, but its just because their are soo many bands who struggle to create songs that venture past four chords.
A lot of people have been getting into rock recently because there is a dirtyness to it that has been present the last 5 decades. So many people dont actually care what they are listening to but more the fact that they are just listening to a rock band.
Bands like 1QA to me aren't just Rock'n'Roll they are trying to be more creative, more "Heavy and diverse". This goes for bands like The Valley 5 etc, bands in Welly that pay more attention to how a song sounds than how it 'looks'.

There is a far better "rock'n'roll" scene out their, you just have to be brave enough to stroll the streets at night and find it.

Me too. For "rock n' roll" bands, none of them are very dangerous.

Bring on the nu-new wave kareoke bands!

if I change my name to "The Disasteradio" you think I'll cash in ? ;)

GARAGE SYNTHPOP has yet to hit the charts

http://mp3.com.au/disasteradio ]

heh, ask tclak if it's working for him.

//GARAGE SYNTHPOP
hey, that's fairly much what "garage" means in the UK. The Streets et al... :-P

//heh, ask tclak if it's working for him.
Well not really, but "Fanatics" by itself just sounds wrong. Oh well, it's too late to change now.

When I posted "nu-new wave kareoke bands" I noticed to my horror that I wrote the word "bands". What I meant was "groups".

(I've been listening to way too much electroclash)

//Oh well, it's too late to change now.
I like The Fanatics. It could have been far worse after all - you could have called yourself Idle Faction.

//(I've been listening to way too much electroclash)
THAT'S what we need more of...

//It could have been far worse after all
You can abbrieviate "The Fanatics" to "The Fannies". I find this rather amusing.

I'm working on the electroclash thing. How about electro-thrash and techno-punk?

Now I'm just being ridiculous.

//You can abbrieviate "The Fanatics" to "The Fannies".
You know that's going to stick now, don't you...

//Idle Faction

//You know that's going to stick now
I don't mind. It kinda suits us.

I don't get this whole "electroclash" thingy. why not just call it "electro" ?
Fischerspooner fucking sucks. I dunno who else you're supposed to call electroclash. give me model 500, kraftwerk or japanese telecom anyday.

// I don't mind. It kinda suits us.

oh no........
so many jokes, SO LITTLE TIME!!!

I know. It's lucky I make myself laugh.

// It could have been far worse after all - you could have called yourself Idle Faction.

Hey!

// I dunno who else you're supposed to call electroclash.
Umm... does Le Tigre count?

and
// It could have been far worse after all - you could have called yourself Idle Faction.
HEY!!

I like Idle Faction. :P

Nya ha ha!

//Nya ha ha!

I sense a spankin comin up.

ahaha, just try it baby. You'll be all trussed up like a chicken before you even realise I'm not the one getting spanked. hmm, where's my leather catsuit?

// hmm, where's my leather catsuit?
Roar.

Hope you find it ;)

i love le tigre

I love Le Tigre more :P

Whew! Its not just me who is over the rock n roll revival! First (for me) were The Strokes who are superb. This was quickly followed by our own Datsuns who are less melodic, but equally fantastic (and their gig at the BDO was one of the best live performances Ive ever seen - I never will get over the fact that I will never see Led Zeppelin perform live....). But for me everything since The Strokes and The Datsuns has been pretty average both in NZ and overseas.

Wow - doesnt this sound exactly like when Rap / rock / nu metal burst onto the scene?!??! First there was Faith no more who were utterly brilliant and everything else since has been crap?

The Karaoke revival is downright spooky....

//he Strokes who are superb. This was quickly followed by our own Datsuns who are less melodic, but equally fantastic

in my opionion when the strokes first came out it was really origional annd interesting to be a band who played an old school type of rock, but since then its gone downhill, sure there are some great bands in that category but its not origional anymore and i feel it will slowly die down, and will just be another musical 'phase'

I bought the D4's 6Twenty yesterday - I can't work out if it was because I wanted it, or because I felt it was my duty.
Damn you, NZM.com, damn you all!

You guys should consider yourselves lucky you can see these bands!! I've hardly ever seen any decent bands play here

Maybe you should consider moving?

why would anyone move out of invercargill??

yeah invers is the shit!! everyone should move here

//everyone should move here
Hey, yeah, that'd solve your problem. If everyone moved to Invercargill, then you'd have all the gigs, and then you could complain along about too much screechy guitar music.

//you could complain along about too much screechy guitar music.

No I wouldn't do that, I would only do it to the ones that suck.

//No I wouldn't do that, I would only do it to the ones that suck.
Trust me, you'd have plenty of cause for complaint. God, you ought to have heard Tacit...

http://ooo.whosastirrertodaythen.me ]

Ah, remember the early 90's, quite a lot of rock around then.., maybe it's the quality of the music that's the problem - I can't name one good NZ rock band formed in the last year or so, and i have tried looking.

// I can't name one good NZ rock band formed in the last year or so

youre kind of impatient. most bands probably dont hit their best for a while.

i hit rock n roll saturation point this year at the big day out. if anyone saw me and thought that i looked bored, its because i was! i felt like if i heard one more fucking guitar i would have to find a gun and shoot myself / the guitar / the guitarist / innocent bystander.

i felt a whole lot better after going to see kraftwerk!

big word to that prozaco !

of course I went for simply that reason heh

and chicks on speed!

Hey all, Rock 'n roll.... well what does that all mean??

Personally i am not a big fan of the Datsuns sound...i.e. it has all been done years before...but that's the beauty of it all. What i DO like about the Datsuns in particular and say, the White Stripes...is their atttude.. and i'm not talking about the jump off my amp attitude, but the whole i dont care if youlike it or not...it's what i like and that's why i'm doing it ...attitude.

The datsuns, have always played what they do..it just so happened that fashion has swung around so that what they do is NOW seen as 'Cool'. I'll tell you something...in 2/3 years when it isnt cool anymore, they'll still be doing the same thing....their way...that's rock'n roll.

NOW what does FUCK me off is ALL the other rock'nroll bands that seem to have popped up to cash in on the hype....now that is NOT rock 'n roll...that's bull shit.

Personally, i Love guitar music... but i dont love screchy guitar music that sounds like all the other screchy guitar music.

If you ask me the best guitar band in NZ at the moment, and have been for a while is 'degrees.K' They go from a sonic boom right down to subtle and beautiful soft,warm tones. THEY are a band that has been doing their thing for years now and arent part of the whole ROCK n ROLL bull shit hype.

You wait, loud rock n roll will die out, people will eventually want more than just raw testosterone...they will want emotion and beauty and intelligent guitar music.....that's when you will all suddenly think DEGREES.K are suddenly cool.

Music and fshion go hand in hand, and unfortunately we live and follow these trends. Step outside the square and listen to something different and make YOU OWN mind up about it.

//Music and fshion go hand in hand, and unfortunately we live and follow these trends.

i hate generalisations.. make me mad x 10 .. your lil rant had too many for my liken, but i thinks degrees.k are wicked too, so wount be a meany today .. just back off on the caps ok

...... and the chosen one they call 'samflux' has spoken
be grateful he hath not smite you with his mighty hand.

//just back off on the caps ok

ok boss

//ok boss

good girl

heather- sounds like your soul is asking for something new- you need to whack there's a riot going on on the turntable

actually- maybe songs for swinging lovers- or vulnerable would be better- or- suite for late summer

// there's a riot going on

a family stone riot? :D

Actually, that's not a bad idea...that selection could be quite good at work...music to write code by.

Yeah yeah, degrees.K are fully gonna take off. They are so good....and mmmmmm good lookin lads too.

Arent they in OZ at the mo?

yeap. I was all gigged out from bands like that. That is why it is so nice to catch bands like The Inkling, Disasteradio and Batrider.
That is why I always retreat to my Soul Coughing CDs. No one has ever come close.

this topic seems like a weird thing to say - 'oh i'm so over rock'n'roll cos everyone's doing it' - i for one have always been a fan of 'screechy guitars', i don't see why my taste should suddenly change because 'the mainstream' have decided that xxxx is fashionable now instead of xxxx. as someone upthread commented, guys like the datsuns will still be making the same music, the music they love and enjoy, long after the nu-grunge/garage fashionistas have moved on to the next big thing. it's just knowing what you like and not being a fickle fashion victim. the garage rock 'phenomenon' is a media creation - bands will cash in on it and good on them (so nice to see nz musicians making money from their music for once!), but it is always obvious, at least in my opinion, when people are making music that they like, that moves them, rather than riding the wave and following trends.

When I started this topic, I wasn't specifically targetting the new rocknroll craze.
I was never talking about riding the wave of fashion.

Jangly guitar rock is something that kiwis have always done well, ever since the beginning of Flying Nun. I'm grateful that the origin and focal point of the kiwi music industry is something really interesting - and not bloody boy bands.

However, for the last six months, for every one gig I've been to that was put on by a quite unique band - the Brunettes, Goldenhorse, Augustino, Paselode, etc, I've been to about 3 jangly guitar-rock gigs. They're all novel in their own right. I liked them for different reasons. I loved the Datsuns, I loved 1QA, Marystaple, Two Lane Black Top, Mother Guru, Slavetrader, etc etc and I'll keep on listening to them and supporting them, but I've just put on my rock compilation tape one too many times.

I feel the need to cull the bands that I listen to, and it's likely to be bands like Ejector, Autozamm, Crumb, Eight, Degrees K et al. They're good, they're worth supporting, but I've got plenty enough rock on my plate already.

fair call, fair comment. I am the same....except degrees.K and ejector are at the top of my LOVE list.

Each to their own i guess.

Keep the peace.
