TV4 to become a music channel?

From an unconfirmed source I've cut and pasted this....

TV4 TO BE RE-LAUNCHED AS MUSIC CHANNEL
TV4 is to be re-launched later this year as a youth oriented
music channel.
The channel, operated by 3 owners CanWest New Zealand, will
feature music shows aimed at 15-29 year olds.
“After considerable analysis of the options for taking TV4
forward, we have settled on a music format as the ideal strategy
for the channel,” said 3/TV4 Managing Director Rick Friesen.
“We have identified this as a niche opportunity in the market –
providing youth oriented music programming on a free-to-air
broadcast platform.
“New Zealand music will play a key role on the channel, and
discussions with New Zealand On Air about their support for it
have been very positive. TVNZ’s decision to can their overnight
music show M2 has made this opportunity even more appropriate,”
Mr Friesen said.
The channel will broadcast live from dedicated TV4 studios in
Auckland from 4pm until midnight (Monday to Thursday) and 4pm
until 1am (Friday and Saturday).
“This format is what we will launch with, and obviously we have
the ability to extend these hours as demand grows,” Mr Friesen
said.
Off-peak broadcast on TV4 will continue to be made up of the
current mix of infomercials and other commercial activity.
The live nature of the channel will also require additional
staff to TV4’s current staffing.
CanWest New Zealand’s radio stations will also have a key
involvement in the music channel.
“We fully intend to tap into the considerable expertise our
colleagues in radio have in relation to music targeted to this
age group. The Edge and Channel Z in particular will be stations
which will have a close working relationship with the new format
TV4,” Mr Friesen said.
The change in format is planned to take place in October.

Personally I think it's a bit of a lose, and feedback I'm getting from the forum where this was originally posted has been heavily negative...

Still thought I'd post it in case people were interested...

Forums: NZ Music,

It seems a bit more confirmed just now. Or at least he mainstream media are running with it. I just noticed that both the herald and nzoom (tvnz) are running that story. Although they're articles are what you posted pretty much verbatim. So it's possible that they've picked up the press release (or untrue leak... or early leak).

gah. that post is a bit of a shocker.
//they're --> their

oh. and they're claiming it's a press release.

The times are a bit stupid. 4pm - 12am: When 15-29 year olds come home, they a)do homework b)have an after school job, or if already working, just want to come home and chill out. Have some dinner, check emails, check nzm forums, then don't want to be up too late because they have to go to school/work tomorrow. The good thing about m2 was that it was weekend nights (bar thursday) and it was on all morning etc, so you could go out to a gig, then come home and chill out with some music vids. I dunno ... I can see this being very commerical. Hmm, just my opinion.

yes i have to agree with you. The times are a bit stupid considering im in that age group yes the times would be a bit inconvenient for me and other people and with NCEA assessments piles of homework would take up a lot of that time. When i get home from school i always have something to eat chat on the phone, check emails, check nzm forums or sometimes i would be working and i would be tired after i would have done all of that so i wouldnt be watching tv that much on school days and im totally always busy on my weekends to catch up with mates and just go out and have a good time. But i do like the idea of TV4 to become a music channel and its a good way to promote how awesome NZ music is and it is good that after ive been out on a saturday of friday night when i get home i would like to just chill out and watch some music videos. Overall i think that TV4 are doing this because TV2(TVNZ) canned M2 and that sparked up a lot of anger and
this is TV4's chance to give viewers what they wanted.Love the idea BUT i still miss M2 no music channel will ever beat it!.... well thats my opinion anyway just thought i would add in my 2 cents

many of us are at the pub at this time...esp on weekends.

Yeah TV4 sure are picking up on TV2's loss. Although any timeslot is better than no timeslot at all. And as long as they play GOOD music...the bad thing is I get really bad TV4 reception...

Well id agree to an extent - I reckon the best was to add value to exercise is to make programmes like give it a wirl. also note that MTV in the states hardly even broadcasts music. thats because watching videos all day is boring. but on the other hand a mix of competition shows, videos and docos on music would be good, the more variety the better - also give Maori their own channel - sticking it on the back of some other commercial venture means itll just get mardinalesed and die - Its all about content and relevance with out that its just crap - like reality shows really - bollocks!

Iwould expect that the music that will be shown on here is probably going to be very similar to that which is played on "the Edge" and Channel Z. Unless of course the foreigh owners of TV4 are keen to promote all Kiwi music ...

That'll depend on how much money NZOA stumps up. I suspect m2's enzed content was also heavily determined by big brother (the hand of helen?).

I would think that tv4 would run a lot of NZ vids because they're a lot cheaper, but they should pinch some of the good ideas off m2. Like the time slot, I agree with the chilling out after gigs (Jay_H) with the ol' dusk till dawn time slot. And the presenters, who were the shit, most of the time anyway.

Actually I would have thought that they will play lots of kiwi music vids

a) b/c it's good
b) b/c they understand that as part of their mission statement, they shoud endeavour to expose their viewers to their own culture, heritage and society.

It's not big brother that has been influencing M2 etc - quite the opposite - It's M2 and every other organisation in the NZ music industry that has finally influenced Big Brother.

//they understand that as part of their mission statement, they shoud endeavour to expose their viewers to their own culture, heritage and society.

have you read their mission statement? It's more touchy feely than one might expect for a multi-national corporation, but it certainly doesn't say or imply anything like that. They'll play nz music if they think it's going to improve their bottom line. That would be
a) b/c NZOA pays them to
b) b/c it rates

TV4 has been running at a loss since it's inception (I think), and I've noticed that TV listings are starting to have Prime at fourth channel, and TV4 as the fifth (rather than vice-versa). I think this reflects the fact that they have been running TV4 down, thinking that the money they were spending on trying wasn't working enough.

I'm a bit surprised about the timing of the press release. You'd think they'd wait until closer to the time so that TVNZ has less time to react.

//I can see this being very commerical.
It is very commercially motivated. They're sick of losing money. And so yes, they'll try and do the right thing by nzm, but they want lots of people to watch it so they can sell ads. That's why m2 was always doomed. No companies with any money could ever be bothered advertising in their time slots. It doesn't suit the more nocturnal of us, but far more people will watch 4pm to midnight, and they'll make more money.

If you don't like it, that anthem from a tv4 program "Blame Canada" is not entirely inappropriate. Or perhaps "Blame Canada West Global"....

I'd started noticing this too.. TV4 wasn't really even comming online until 6pm or so, and even then it was some forgettable rubbish, and the only thing that is memorable is Star Trek on saturday night, but that finished up a few weeks ago.

If it picked up an M2 style show, that would be excellent. except instead of having a 4-5 hour show, it will be 8 to 9 hours of airtime.

That said ... like Tama Drummer says below.. if it does turn into 8-9 hours of britney or whoever is cool this week.. well.. *gag*.

ps. has anyone noticed the fucking horrible and LARGE screen watermark on the bottom right-hand corner of TV3?

I presume that the reason why they are waiting until October is so that they can integrate the last few rating shows (say Southpark and Buffy) back into TV3. As to the watermark, might take that to the bar.

//....and the only thing that is memorable is Star Trek on saturday night, but that finished up a few weeks ago.

Hang on what about South Park, or The Family Guy... certainly they beat some hackended Rodenberry crap Sci-Fi (prepares to be flamed, goes and watches FarScape)...

But yeah I have been disappointed by the fact the often there is actually 'nothing' on TV4... Could be good, more likley will be bad if they stick to the age group which they have mentioned... and I also agree with predictions that it'll be dead soon anyway....

It would be good if Prime got their frequency - basically cause Prime rocks...

Thats my 2c worth (plus inflation)

m2 was doomed 'cause it cost too much money to keep going. and arrgh at those free adverts - silly little men telling us to shop at their porn sites in high voices. argh.

you need m2 broadcast live on the net or something, so it'd cost less. not that it'd work on my computer very well. but still. little steps...like a radio station? nah I love my m2. or even an hour of m2 a week would be good. and supposedly TVNZ have plans for a condensed version of m2 anyway, or something...anyway off my m2 rant.

Sounds like a extended version of Most Wanted, but hopefully thats not the case, because theres already Juice for that on Sky.
It better be not just music videos, it should have some live concerts too!!

//extended version of Most Wanted
that's our Worst Case Scenario.

I think tv4 may have been playing some concerts of late anyway, so if they have, then maybe that's hopeful.

i'll miss some of the movies and sit coms that 4 used to play... but this music channel idea is good.

i think they should have different shows, so you can tune in and know your going to see pop or rock or metal or whatever. Maybe on a tuesday at 8:30 they have the concert of the week, which is just some gig (it could be one just been or a 1976 led zep)... hmm, tama how does the 'sounds of seatle' show? :-p

//hmm, tama how does the 'sounds of seatle' show? :-p

Do you mean a special on the early 90s seattle 'grunge' scence?? they can just put the 'Hype' video for that.

// they should have different shows

Yeah. Like a devoted one hour show of all nzmusic videos in primetime, rather than having to sit through an hour of crap in the hope of seeing maybe one or two...

Hype could be aired, but i was meaning more like a 30/60 minute show once or twice a week that just shows videos and live clips from seattle bands in the late 80's early 90's

thought you'd be into a bit of that? i know i would :)

Yeah I would be into it, I would like to see SoundGarden & Alice in Chains videos on tv, but Nirvana a bit less thou.

AMERICAS MOST WANTED (the TV4 Crime solving show with john walsh) is my favorite TV-4 Program?? what are they gunna do to it??? i dont want it sacrificed for some 17 year old barley clothed lezzy slutbags from the fmr USSR - the type of "artists" who deserve the death penalty and would have been shot by the KGB had this been 1961. how bout putting the resources into sending these slutwhores and there liking to S-21/Kampuchea where pol pot can sort em out.

umm, we're talking about that music video show at 7:00pm called 'Most Wanted'

http://www.tv4.co.nz ]

//It better be not just music videos, it should have some live concerts too!!

heres hoping ah, i saw a staind concert on tv4 a year or so back, hopefully theyl play that again, it was brilliant.

I'd assume so. Price to Play would be off it.

oh wicked, damn you, i want it!!
know whats happening with staind at the moment?are they writing a new album or what?

Yeah, I saw that too, it was damn good. Then 2 days later TV 2 played a Staind special. I taped both of them.

Well, I'm excited. Since M2 died I've missed having a place to watch late night videos. I doubt TV4 will be as cool as M2 was, but it seems like a good thing, anyway. I think it should go later than 1 am on Friday and Saturday nights - one of the cool things about M2 was coming home from a night out and just sitting around watching music videos for a while.

I suspect that it won't be the Britney channel, but it might be the Avril channel.

I WANT MY HEAVY METAL!!!!!! I WANT MY DEAD KENNEDYS!!!!!!! I WANT MY ACID ROCK!!!!!!! Lets demolish pop and dance and radio-friendly rap music to its death!!!!!!!!!!

external link ]

as long as this music channel plays pantera, slayer, deicide and canabil corpse as well as acid rock and non-radio-friendly punk and doesnt play all this sugasluts, britney, slutina bullshit then id be in.

pol pot......pol pot......pol pot......pol pot......pol pot......pol pot......pol pot...... - Jello Biafra/Dead Kennedys

external link ]

a hour show like mulch would be sweet!!

an hour??? id give it at least 5.....that way us headbangers will be proud.

keep on dreaming, that is very unlikely

yeh thats tru...but if it where a reality then all the top 40/dance/rap would be sacrified for our slayer and deicide.

well unless people like you start your own music tv channel, I don't see that happening

I want at the very least koRn, system of a down, disturbed, slipknot, soulfly type of bands - they can't say they are out of date bands... slayer might be pushing it... although some classic bands like that would be cool!

Why doesn't The Rock have more pull? Whats wrong with the NZ audience.. bunch of nipple suckling mama's hoo haa's...

(breathes sigh of relief, and pulls video camera out of storage)
respect TV4.

king of the hill, family guy and south park the bout the only thing to be missed. the rest is shit, old re-runs of movies that are so old and unheard of that is wut make 4 less of a channel. the music sounds better than wut theyve got already. everyones complaining bout how the times arent good and how they might play crap music... well if so i think its still better than wut they have. plus juice doesnt play good music all the time, and the same with most wanted. theyre intended for everyone not just us music enthusiasts on NZM. i say ka pai to TV4!

I would say (or hope) that some of those shows will be played on tv3 instead

It's even quite likely that they'll end up thrown into the TV4 music channel mix in the same way MTV has scheduled shows as part of their programming.

If we provide feedback to TV3/TV4 early in the relaunch process then the new music channel may have a greater New Zealand music focus and content.

You know, making TV4 the music channel is a "great idea" (LOL) , but then not so great, cos not everyone gets TV4, so that just plain sucks in my books. I think there will be more negatives on this one. It needs a re-think.

well i dunno about you but i hope they play some canadian content....real canadian content..or...GOOD canadian content. they have all those episodes of the new music and shit that plays music i love on it hidden away never to be shown by tv4. they should give them to ME and let me revel in the goodness of the tea party and matt good. oh yes...and perhaps play...some of that "kiwi" music you kids seem to go ga-ga over.

Yeah 'New Music' was good, hopefully they'll play more stuff from 'Much Music TV'

DECENT CANADIAN MUSIC
RUSH
THE GUESS WHO
KITTIE
